1911 45 ACP
« on: October 09, 2005, 04:55:57 PM »
Well, I'm thinking about buying a nice, full frame 1911 -- I've got a pro carry II Kimber for my briefcase.  Dad has a Gold Match Kimber, which is a nice gun -- I'm thinking about either one of the custom Kimbers, a Wilson, Les Baer, any other recommendations?  I'm also thinking about getting a 460 Rowland conversion kit for it, to use as a hunting sidearm, and maybe one of those carbine conversions, just to mess around --but neither of those ideas are real requirements.

I have now 8 1911"s.  My latest is a Springfield Loaded parkerized and it is the most accurate of the following:  Custom Caspian, Colt Gunsites, standard length and CCO, Colt Commanders, LW and standard weight and a custom Caspian .38 Super and a WWII GI, new, Springfield.  I had a Kimber and it broke.  I sold my Les Baer because it was a pain to take down for cleaning.

The loaded not only is a basic weapon but has such a great trigger out of the box that I shoot it better than anything else I have in the 1911 configuration.  I get perverse pleasure in outshooting my friends with more expensive ones.  All it need now is a pair of faux ivory grips.

I love series 70 Colt Gold Cups but have a Springfield Mil-
Spec that Teddy Jacobson did a real number on that I love
too. Springfields are hard to beat for the value.

My prize 1911 is a Colt Government Model 1991A1 which I had customized by Clark Custom Guns.  It took almost a year to get it back from CCG, but it was well worth the wait.  It is now melted, hard chromed, and equipped with a LaserMax sight and Sambar Stag grips . . . a beautiful "tack driver."

Like HiCap, I also get a perverse pleasure from outshooting some of my friends with their prize possessions.

Pardon, Richard, but that sounds like a prize possesion.
Maybe not in the "Pistol Dynamics" league but definitely not
stock out of the box.

I wanted to add Pistol dynamics to that list as well -- is one of the custom line of Springfields worth it?  Anyone know if the custom grade Kimbers still have MIM parts?

Just a guess but I suspect all Kimbers have MIM parts;
that is one of the problems Teddy Jacobson has with
Kimbers.

Tracker:

No, she's not up there with a Pistol Dynamics masterpiece, but for one that started out as a "Plain Jane" standard issue, she cleaned up pretty good    8) :

Thanks for the photo. Isn't it great when something works
as well as it looks like yours does? That is a beautiful piece.

Although I don't know anyone who has one, Ed Brown
must build a fine weapon. His parts are first rate(that I do
know) and he has been in business a long time. Teddy J.
says that he is one of the few upscale boutique gunsmiths
that he hasn't seen one of his guns to fix a problem.

Thanks, Tracker.  She's all I want or need in a 1911.  If and when "the dreck hits the fan," she'll be one of the weapons in my "war bag" -- along with my R9s, of course.

I agree; the only thing I might add to that arsenal is
some sort of rifle/Ar-15 type and a Glock-19 or -17 for
sheer fire power.

tracker,

The AR-15 is wonderful.  Wish I had got one long time ago.

My main regret is getting an A2 handle because it is difficult to mount optics.

A flat-top (A3) would have been much better.

Absolutely!  Here's my choice, a stainless-steel Winchester 1300 Marine Defender with top-folding stock, laser, and tac light.  Stoked with 3" shells (00's or slugs), it really rocks!   :o
