I talked to the owner of VZ Grips at the NRA show I ask about making custom G10 grips for the pup I was told it was in the works. I have kept check on the site to no availability I emailed them about 6 weeks ago they said they were going to be doing them in 30 days or so. Maybe they need more inquiries about them. They do a set of 3D Punisher grips and other varieties of checkering for 1911 , Sig , CZ, Colt Double Eagle.

Welcome to the forum!!
VZ make some interesting looking grips..
The more the merrier on "extras" for the pup!!
The grips have to be made correctly for the function of the gun itself, this is the biggie..
Once again,welcome..

Welcome to the forum twoguns.
Thanks for the info on the grips.
Hope that comes through.

Not to dampen any enthusiasm on this topic but I talked with them twice last year and heard the same thing. I do hope it comes to pass as they have a quality product and are good to deal with.
-
e-mailed them last week about having custom set in G-10 carbon made to match my 1911 and they said they would have prototypes at the end of the month.
-
TGjr and Robfu, I'd like to welcome the both of you to Rohrbaugh Land. It contains the best forum, the best pocket pistols and most importantly the best people anywhere. So get comfortable and enjoy us as we will enjoy you. Gene

Robfu. I'd like to welcome you to the Forum as well. Post often.
-
TGjr and Robfu, a welcome from me as well.
I've signed up, of course, for a set of VZ grips for the R9 when they come to market.

I like the FRAG grips; reminds me of the smell of gunpowder, cordite, burned kerosene, and napalm in a visual sense.
-
I'm amazed, for sure! ;)

Well, your waits are over. Here are a few Proto's.

Just a few to wet the whistle... They are killer! I had to find a carry piece to wear around the shop, the full size 1911 was just getting in the way. The R9 was the ticket and of coarse I had to make grips for it. Only the best!!! They should be ready to sell by next weeks end. Sorry to those that waited so long, we've been busy... Oh ya, I really didn't like the screws that came with the gun so these will ship with button heads.
-
VZ_Grips:
One pair of those has "No. 132" stamped all over them! And I really like the button head grip screws. I'll be watching this space and your web site for information on when to place an order.

VZ_Grips. Welcome to the Forum. Excellent looking grips, for sure. I like the button head screws, too. We'll be watching for info. Thanks!

Those look very nice. What will they cost and how thick are they compaired to stock grips? And yes, everybody thanks you for the screw update!
-
Our grips are a little different then what I've seen out there. We have a radius that peaks at .177" and tapers down to .053". The Hogue grips are flat and measure in at .145"
They are going to be priced around $60 or so and will ship with new screws. I'll have more details in the days ahead.

I will be sure to buy the first set of grips. I like the wood grip look. Are they are to install?
-
Couple things to be careful of; the right grip has a recessed area for the trigger spring and don't strip out the grip screws as these are really tight from the factory.

What is the grip material?
-
G10 according to the first post. VZ will have to verify.

* They are super simple to install. Yes, the right panel has a pocket for the trigger assembly so just take your time.
* They are made out of G10 and we'll run some out of carbonfiber as well.

Hey! Carbon fiber. You have my attention! :)
-
VZ Very nice grips indeed!
-
Awesome!
You already have a customer here with a pair on my 1911.
Now, I am ready for a pair of these!
Thanks!
-
I give myself "E" for effort. Noting that the web site had changed a bit, I tried to order my selected pair. Too early, it would seem. But as Arnold would say, "I'll be back."
-
I've always been a great believer in determination! :)

I'm trying to keep you company Richard - my VZ Grips shipped this afternoon and I don't even have my R9 - yet. I think I'll be picking it up the same day the grips arrive ...
-
You remind me of myself. I already had a Hedley holster by the time I took delivery of my R9. 8)

I truly like the looks of the grips-will hope they "hold up" during use..
I am very interested in the grip screws, hoping they work on the OEM grips-especially the CFs!!
Looking forward to doing business soon!!
I also need a new set of grips for the 1911 and Seecamp conversion!!! ;)

The VZ Grips use an alloy steel button head screw; the OEM grips require a flathead screw, so those screws won't work.
But Rorhbaugh also offers black flathead screws that
do work on the stock grips and seem to be alloy steel instead of stainless - they are tougher than the stainless screws.

I understand about the screws from Rohrbaugh-I have just a "couple" extra sets available..
I've got an enquiry in about the "adaptability" of the grip screws from VZ..
The grip screws have been a bit of weakness in the Pup for some people, stripping heads have been a complaint for a long time..
-
The only way the grip screws could be adapted is by milling the current beveled holes in your grips to a flat bottom hole.

I just received mine and put them on. I bought the what I believe they call black cherry. I hope to get pictures tomorrow and will try post them.
I know I like the feel. With John's grip extension and the grips be serrated t it has a great feel.

Indeed it has been. That's one reason why I ordered and tried the black screws from Rohrbaugh - to see if I thought they might be a better screw to use and less likely to strip the heads.
It's my opinion that they are better than the silver screws in this regard simply because of the material choice. Stainless has advantages as a screw material because it won't rust and in that sense is a good choice for a grip screw in an all stainless gun. But as a fastener material it's pretty bad - most notably in that it has a high rate of creep - tighten a stainless screw and it will elongate over time and get loose. Stainless screws may also be a little on the soft side as well which makes them easy to strip the hex socket.
While I was told that the only difference between the stainless and the black screws was the color, when I got them I tested them with a magnet and found that the silver screws are non-magnetic (as most stainless alloys are) but the black screws - like the ones for the VZ Grips - are magnetic which means they're not stainless but likely some steel alloy. They also seem to be quite a bit harder than the silver screws, and the fit of a hex key is much tighter than the fit on the silver screws.
I believe that the VZ Grip screws would address the grip screw problem on the R9 because they are also magnetic alloy steel. I also believe that the black screws from Rohrbaugh would address the problem as well for the same reason - a tougher material.

Thanks very much for all the intel.
The VZ cherry black grips are calling me. ;)
Before ordering... The rattle issues are only on the stealth, (S) right?

Gentlemen,
I just got my checkered, black cherry grips this afternoon. Fast, fast service if there ever were such. Yankee, they must be reading your mail, it's that fast. The grips are beauties, and will go on my custom R9s, if I ever get it customized. Having trouble deciding who to send it to for custom finish and checkering on trigger guard, and front and back grip straps. Decisions, decisions. Hmmm...Suggestions?
Kindest regards,
4mallard

Thinking of adding VZ grips based on info here. Any suggestions regarding carbon fiber vs. smooth other than color options? (I don't care about pretty as much as function)
-
Paul @ Designer Grips makes some nice grips for the R9 with checkering or smooth, very similar to VZs. He was making grips for the R9 before VZ got into it.
I have a set from Designer Grips on my pup and am very happy with them.
http://www.designergrips.com/
-
Thanks, I'll check them out! John
-
Backup, I have VZ's and a pair of Designer's. I was disappointed with Designers on function and looks. They looked too "plastic" and cheap to me and the grip just did not feel up to par with the VZ's.
I bought the Designer checkering and the smooth VZ.
However, I modified the Designer grips with a dremel by dishing out a thumb groove all the way across the top of the panel for the thumb to rest in rather shooting left or right-handed.
This also made the grips look much better. The cheap plastic gloss is gone and now it is broken up with a dull black/bllue.
Now it has function and looks.
Sorry, I do not know how to post pics.
If I had to pic one, I would definitely pic VZ.
-
Thanks also Reinz. I pulled up the Designers website and didn't like the appearance as much tho it's hard to tell from pictures sometimes, especially when only in one view. If I go w/VZ I'd like to know if there is any material difference between Carbon Fiber and smooth VZ's in grip/texture.
-
According to the website, the regular smooth and the checkered grips are G-10 .
The carbon fiber are actually a matrix of carbon fiber And G-10.
-
I can't help you with the difference between vZ grip textures, but I have a pair of VZ carbon Fiber grips that are quite grippy, and provide an enhanced grip over the factory ones. The rounded edges and slight palm swell make for a much better fit as well.
Oddly enough, I just placed an order this afternoon with designergrips (just for a different color), so I can post some comparison photos after the arrive.

I agree totally.
And I believe it was Moonshine who had a great analogy on another post , to paraphrase, saying that the VZ's make the R9 feel like a pistol rather than a piece of lumber/ 1x2 (?).

Saw that post...why I'm buying. I like "grippy" so I guess I'll spring for the carbon fibers. Thanks to all for the helpful responses.
-
One of best moves you can make. You won't be sorry.
I'll probalbly end up VZ's on all of mine.
-
Well, your waits are over. Here are a few Proto's.
I just installed a pair of checkered black-cherry VZ grips (identical to those in the photo from VZ_Grips earlier post) on my plain-vanilla stainless R-9.
They look great, feel good, and we're easy to install. And also have niftier screw heads.
For the record, the OEM grip panels came off easily... there were no problems with an errant trigger-return spring when I lifted the right panel... and the pin holes and screw holes on the new panels fit perfectly.
Both pup and papa are happy.
-
Fine looking, I have a set of those also. :D
-
Ron. Excellent. Enjoy!
-
Will there be blue carbon fiber?
-
I just purchase an R9 and I am looking to get the VZ grips. I am looking at the black checker and the CArbon Fiber. Can someone comment as to which one will give me a better grip. Thanks.
-
Welcome to the forum! I have the carbon fiber VZ grips on my Covert and find the grip to be excellent. I have not tried the black checker VZ but have the checkered Hogues which also did well, but nowhere nearly as comfortable as the VZ's.
-
Welcome to the forum I_elieze.
I bought a regular pair of carbon fiber VZ's with the intentions of buying a pair of checked down the road.
The pair I got feel so much better than the factory grips (G10 and CF). As Moonshine, one other forum member put it, to paraphrase, it's like going from gripping a 1x2 piece of lumber to now actually holding a gun.
The VZ regulars CFs have a bit of a palm swell/curve that make them fell better and grip so much better that I now have no desire to try the checkered ones.
Just my view from the saddle.
-
Time to re-energize this thread! I picked up a set of checkered carbon fiber grips from Designergrips.com and really like the feel, but they are a bit too shiny for my taste so now I'm thinking about some VZs. I shot John from VZ an email about making a set of their carbon fiber grips with checkering since anything that gives me a better grip on my little pup is OK in my book. I received a reply in about 15 minutes letting me know that they are in the works and will appear on their site for 2012. I was kind of shocked by the quick reply! Usually I'll have to wait for a day or two to hear back from manufacturers. I told him I'd be first in line as soon as they go live. I'll be sure to post pictures and a report whenever I can get my hands on them.
-
Maybe a light sanding with some 1000 grit paper would break the shine enough and still allow the grips to look good.
-
I was contemplating that, but I've never worked with resin so I didn't want to mess them up. When I get the VZ grips, I was planning on selling these. If I end up keeping both sets, maybe I'll get brave enough to experiment.
-
Give Paul at Designergrips a call, he is great to work with. He can tell you what will work and what won't. When I was looking for new grips for my engraved Seecamp 380 he helped me pick out what I wanted and I am more than satisfied with the look.
-
Sounds like a good idea, I'll shoot him an email later this morning.
