Server speed

Have noticed today (8/23) that server seems slower than usual - some of yesterday found same too.  Other sites are coming down pretty quick.

Seems the delay is in the wait during the ''request to-'' phase - once data transfer gets going it is good and normal speed.  Just wondering if others have noticed similar.

Now that you mention it, I did notice that yesterday.  It seems back to normal today.  I just assumed it was my computer acting up and gave it a full system scan.

Well - I did also have a slight issue with my satellite link too yesterday - it seemed sluggish - so that may have added to the prob - tho boards were generally Ok - it was just big file downloads that were slower.

Anyways - today we seem jet propelled again - long may that continue!

Our cabin up in the mountains receives television service via Direct TV.  They advertise a high-speed internet connection.  I have experience only with their TV service.  That comes and goes according to the weather, but it is generally reliable.  (Direct TV's mantra is, "All you need is a clear view of the southern sky.")  Is satellite internet service an option while you wait for cable?

Richard - yes if you have a clear view of suyitable sky region it'll work.  I had to choose it (Direcway 6000) because I have yet to have dsl or cable available here.

Downside is - cost is rather excessive IMO and of course now and again weather can cause a problem - extreme rain/t-storms and heavy snow too.  That applies also if ground station affected.  Overall tho I manage OK compared with old dial-up!!

Direcway quotes 50k up and 500k down.  I often get 600k plus down - but uploading is slower than I'd like.

Do you use the telephone line to do uplinks?

I didn't know if you are able to transmit to the satellite when you press <enter>.  I've always thought  that it is receive only from the satellite.

Bill - this satellite thing is totally divorced from phone lines.  It has two feeds - in and out - and so does all up and down data transfers.

The modem is on all the time - permanent connection - any time I browse, fetch files etc - I am connected.  Even overnight it is on and my puter runs pretty much 24/7 - so big files being emailed at night will come down ready for next day.

My best download so far was 270 Mb in 40 minutes - not top end cable speed but useful!

Well, I was completely wrong in my thinking about internet satellite service.

I have been an amateur radio operator since 1954, and we can routinely use satellites for 2-way communication.

It is even possible to  bounce the signal off the moon, down to the other station, although the moon is not a very good reflector of radio energy.

Meanwhile, back to the subject, I always thought the internet satellite service was 1-way, and some other technique like the telephone was required when you hit <enter>.

Your explanation is very much appreciated.

By the way, the forum has seemed to be a little slow the last few days.

I think earliest satellite was one way - and in fact the legacy of that could be this disparity between up and down speeds.

The transponder on the dish does both but really not sure why up is so slow.

I was close to getting my ''Ham'' ticket myself back in 60's - I was in a local radio club - went on many thru the night events up on hills!  Built gear - did lotta listening but - never went all the way - just too many other darned interests!

I should have been a ''G3'' - but never was!

Hi Richard,

The G3 has an unusual meaning.

It is a prefix used for the call letters of amateur radio stations in a certain portion of England.

It does sounds like government spy words, doesn't it?

My call letters begin with W8, which historically means the station is located in Michigan, Ohio, or West Virginia.

Thanks for setting me straight, Bill.   With regard to radios, I never progressed beyond a CB rig.  

With regard to the Army, I still maintain that G2 is more fun than G3.

I have a memory of being in G-2, Division level, of the Third Division in '53 - '54 while in Korea...  Long story, maybe it will show up on "ISM's" page....

One thing I forgot - back in my Army cadet days after basic - I was L'cpl in our Royal Corps of Signals division - used two old sets in those days - the ''19'' set and for mobile the ''38'' - a haevy monster with cold cathode valves and a humungous battery pack - one for low tension the other for HT ... boy was that heavy!

Since then only CB for a few years but - that got tired with so many on it who were total PITA!!
