Do you have any advice about how to avoid stripping the screws other than heating them with a small soldering iron just prior to removal?

Did not ask. All I know is that everything is fixed :) Maria said that Eric was very surprised at the condition of the R9 and stated it was very collectable. It was test fired and updated springs were added.

My question was would you do anything differently removing screws next time or was this incident unavoidable once you decided to remove the screws?

I would not do anything different. In total, I have stripped two screws on two previously owned R9s. In both cases, the screws appeared to be somewhat stripped by the previous owners. I just made things worse :) I don't have any problems with newer screws.

CCW.  Glad it's coming home.  Good luck on your decision.
