Title: Milt Sparks PCH in elephant hide
Post by: justin2992 on September 30, 2004, 05:33:08 PM
Kudos to Tony Kanaley at Milt Sparks for his wonderful craftsmanship on this holster.  This is my 2nd PCH from Milt Sparks.  It is definitely the crown jewel of my collection.  Tony's designs are well thought out and unique in many respects and the craftsmanship and materials are top notch! I had originally ordered it in black shark, but Tony gave me a call before he started making it to discuss design options. He told me about the holster he had made for his own Rohrbaugh out of elephant. I decided to have him make me one just like his. Thanks a lot, Tony!

Anyway, here are the pics with my new R9s

Justin,
What was the wait time on that beautiful holster? The last time I ordered from Milt Sparks, it was 4 months, but that was a while ago.

Justin,
If you don't mind me asking, what did you have to pay for it?

Well, I was originally quoted a base price of $50 + $20 for shark.  When I changed it to elephant, Tony told me the base price is $65 + $45 for elephant. "The base price of $50 is for the PCH without the wire reinforcement, which is how the PCH for the Kahr PM9 is made up."  Tony honored the original base-price quote so I paid $95 plus shipping.  I guess the Rohrbaugh is priced in the revolver category.  The prices and descriptions listed on the website certainly don't make that clear.

On a side note, a couple years back I talked to Mitch Rosen about making a pocket holster for my J-frame.  He quoted me something like $425 for shell cordovan with stingray trim, $600 for all stingray, and $500 for elephant.  Needless to say I didn't buy from him nor would ever consider it again.

That is very nice!

I have a african ostrage "kentucky" holster by Graham, so the R9 is covered pretty well, I may order one like that for my lil seecamp 380  ;)

That is one sweet looking holster...

Justin,
In there behalf on the disparity in price, I offer the following...late last year was the first time in ALONG time that you could legally import elephant hide into the country...Kangaroo also falls into this catagory...that is why the price is so cheap now compared to several years ago...

Gotta remember...ripp off that design! ;D

Howdy..and "yeah".."Elephant" skin is hard to come by...no matter who ya!

It is surely "exotic"..but black ostrich or black reef shark is certainly even more visual drama...and just plain pretty.

Both available..at this moment..at the Rohebaugh Store...I wouldn't wait..if I wanted one right now:)

Best,
Ronbo-San

Just wondering if anyone else has gotten an "Elephant" for their R9..Looking for an update!! I have the Stingray that was auctioned for the site, enjoying more every day,and I am getting more interested in the exotics.. ;D

Pity my meager pocket book.. :)

The elephant skin looks awesome!  I've been eyeing the elephant skin holsters on the rohrbaugh store site, but I could fill volumes with what I don't know about elephant skin.

Other than being an exotic, what are the specific qualities about elephant skin that make it more desireable than some other conventional holster materials, such as leather?

Although I dont own any elephant skin holsters, that has got to be one of the toughest hides that should retain its shape and last forever, along with looking good.

And the nice thing about elephant for a pocket holster is that it has a roughish texture - making it want to stay home in your pocket while you smoothly draw and ... well you know...do what you have to do!!!

Both the elephant and shark are very tough leathers with great texture for a super look. I guess if you wear an elephant hair bracelet you need an elephant holster!   Tom

Thanks for all the great feedback.  It has been extremely informative, but I have just one follow up question.

My current pocket holster is leather with the rough side out.  It grips my pocket really well and stays put during the draw.  I really like that the soft leather is against my R9.  It sounds like the elephant is very similar to the rough side leather (in terms of texture, anyway).  Is there a soft side of the skin like the soft side of leather, or are these holsters typically lined with some other material?

Fortunately, I'm not a slave to fashion, I'm just happy to match two clean socks in the morning ;D

As with any exotic, elephant is not used as a structural leather but rather is bonded to cowhide or horsehide for use as a holster.  You'd still end up with the smooth side of the cowhide or horsehide next to your pistol.

What Matt Del Fatti said... ;D

Although Elephant hair bracelets would prolly go well with the pocket holster, I am pretty sure that Milt Sparks doesnt make those...hahehehahahahaahahahaaaaa!!!!!!

And no, even though I got long hair, I dont make them either....lol

Mr Del Fatti,
I had a customer bring over the new copy of a gun rag...I gotta say kudos to the revolver holster pictured on page 53...That is some sweet work!

I know this is old news, but something that should be considered, especially w. shell cordovan and ostrich, is that they both will stretch considerably -- elephant is a good choice, but you should be able to find some, albeit probably much more expensive, that have considerably less grain -- just experience from cowboy boots

That is an incredible holster!  Thanks for the outstanding pictures.

I also ordered one, and enclosed the above pictures in an email, so there would be no mixup in the order.

Here is what Tony said:

Bill,
The holster in the photo is one I made for a customer, hence the reason it is left hand. It is a duplicate of what I made for myself and also the way we make the PCH for Rohrbaughs. It will probably be made by Nick since he does all the pocket holsters,  but will look the same. Thanks.

Tony

This will join my Hedley holster.  Life is good!

Thanks to Milt Sparks and RJ Hedley for making these wonderful products.

Justin,

Did you use a tripod to take those pictures?

And, did you have a close-up lens attached to the camera?

Thanks,

Bill

Yes I used a tripod with a cheapo Kodak 2.1 mpixel camera with no manual settings.

Well, I finally got my Milt Sparks PCH in elephant hide, after waiting 13 weeks.

It looks just like the first picture provided by Justine in this thread.  Many, many thanks to Justin for sharing his good fortune.

The holster is a stunning, good-looker.  What a shame it has to be hid in the pocket.

Milt Spark's  PCH is wide, has a large curve, and fits against the leg  perfectly.  It even seems like the R9S is curved!

It now joins my immortal RJ Hedley holster.

Mine took 9 weeks and that seemed like forever.  Why does it only look like my first picture.  I'd love to see front and back pics of yours.

Justin,

I'm not set up with a camera right now.

To tell the truth, it looks exactly like yours.

The fit is remarkable.  Don't even know it's there.
