Dave,

I like that dog of yours!  He sounds like a fun guy to have around.

We had eight wild cats born here in our wood pile.  I felt sorry for them, and have always given them food and water.

The vet gave us a special deal about getting them fixed.

I caught them in a humane cage trap for their journey to the doctor.  Each time he would shave a strip on their back  to indicate they had been processed.

I could not catch the last one, no matter what.  Finally, in desperation, I went to Wendys where they just introduced a new bacon cheeseburger with special sauce.  Right away, she got caught using the new morsel.  Wendys makes good products.

Dave:

Thanks for opening No. IV!

We have some new "friends" down at Critter Creek.  Two of them are a little shy, but allow me to introduce Sophia and her older daughter, Surprise:

But there's nothing shy about the third one, Sophia's younger daughter, Bridgette:

Bill when you said "wild cats" I first thought you meant mountain lions or bobcats - when I was growing up we called them "wild cats".

Very nice Richard - are they a part of your family?

This was posted I think on the Seecamp forum - maybe RJ - don't remember.   These horses are all made of driftwood - amazing.

Dave:

You might call us the "God Parents."  They actually belong to our neighbor, who looks after Critter Creek during our absence.

Those driftwood horses are indeed amazing!  I would love to have one at the entrance to the compound at Critter Creek.

Dave,

I did see a bobcat one time.  I was going up a mountain road near my town in Arkansas.  It crossed at a "hair-pin" curve.  It was pretty exciting.

Last summer, we were sitting on our deck up north, and a humming bird landed right next to us on a limb, and we looked at each other for five minutes.  First time it ever happened.

Three or four years ago, we were sitting in yard chairs out in the sand, at 2:00pm on a brilliant, sunny day.  A great meteor came ripping across the sky, and exploded in a white ball with many other colors present.

Lots of things happen when you don't have a camera.   :)

Dave,

Last summer, we were sitting on our deck up north, and a humming bird landed right next to us on a limb, and we looked at each other for five minutes.  First time it ever happened.

That happened to me once about 25 years ago.  I was between "projects," was sailing a sloop on bareboat-charter out of St. Lucia, and had dropped anchor and gone ashore at Palm Island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  While getting myself pleasantly "plastered" at the patio bar of the Palm Island Hotel, a hummingbird (which I later identified as what I believe to have been a Green-throated Carib [Sericotes holosericeus]), landed on the branch of a vine growing next to my table. The bird was literally within the reach of my arm.

After five days on the water -- and with two tropical rum concoctions working their magic in my brain, I sat there for about five minutes staring this minute and beautiful bundle of energy in the eye.  I remember that, for that brief span of time, I was absolutely mesmerized . . . and strangely at peace.

The bird lost interest before I did and suddenly flew away.  But I remember the experience vividly to this day.

And here is a textbook photograph of the bird:

Some time later, shortly after arriving in Lagos, Nigeria, I was sitting in the patio bar of the Ikoyi Hotel when a small green lizard darted out of a hedge on my right and disappeared into a hedge on my left, pursued by a larger grey lizard with a bright red head.  A few minutes later, the larger lizard with the bright red head emerged from the hedge on my left with the tail of the smaller green lizard dangling from its mouth.  I remember thinking at the time that the hummingbird on Palm Island was a better omen.  And so it proved to be.

Very fine story, Richard.  I'm glad you shared that.  Excellent!

Many years ago in USAF pilot training, I was practicing aerobatics by myself for one hour, and decided to do a spin to reduce altitude for the return ride home.

The baggage door tore open, and tie-down ropes caught in the tail.  I was unable to control the nose and had to bail out.  The plane circled around and was not too far from hitting me.

Anyway, that night I was sitting on the barracks steps looking up into the brilliant star-filled sky.  There, to my amazement, was a comet painted among the stars.

It was my own little personal comet.  It was an erie feeling.  I felt it was a celebration of my good fortune.

Richard - we get some humming birds here tho if we forget to put out a feeder it's hard to see them a lot.

Some friends tho have several feeders out and I have several times just sat and watched - mesmerized too - they are astonishing and I have yet to know just how energy useage to energy required ever balances as an equation!

This summer I plan to take camera to these friend's place and patiently attempt to get some pics - not easy but, will try.

I'll have to ask my mother -- when I was a little kid, we had some plants around the house she put in to attract humming birds -- used to constantly have them around.  Had little red, deep flowers.

Bill,
We are all glad you made it back to land - did you get any grief for losing the plane?

Humming birds seem a mircle of nature.

Two things happened wth birds with me today.  All of my years on earth I have never seen two birds mating - until today.  Leaving for work this morning two turkeys were mating in my drive.  True not your usual small bird and they are rarely in trees, but a sight never less.  The male tom fanned the tail feathers out like a blanket - no camera.

Back in OMW III a hawk nest was posted that can be viewed from inside the house.   The below picture was taken early evening through the window of a hawk perched right outside the house - a liitle zoom helps.  I believe he/she was waiting for a possible chipmunk.

Dave,

No problem about the airplane.  It was an act of God.

Nothing could be done because ropes were caught in the elevator where it goes up and down.  I could not lower the nose to a safe level.   The airplane was nose high and not far from stalling.

As I recall, a directive was later issued that tie-down ropes no longer be carried in the luggage comparment.

That picture of the hawk is awesome.

Since we are on the subject of birds, my Cockatoo has learned to howl like my dog and bark like the neighbor's dog.  An extremely funny thing to watch and  listen to.  She will put her head back and howl, not too loudly, but it sounds exactly like my dog when the sirens go by.  Yesterday she started "barking" like the dog next door to us.  A quiet, "bark, bark".  The resemblance to the sound of the Yorkie next door was perfect.

Richard, if you ever decide to write an autobiography put me down for a copy, it is sure to be an interesting read.

There is still another side of the story.

I had entered pilot training through the Air National Guard pilot training quota.  If you quit or washed out, you would revert back to civilian status.

Halfway to completion, I started to have second thoughts about flying as a career, and decided to quit.  I never did really have a reason, except maybe difficulty hearing during frequent altitude changes.  I've spent the rest of my life going over the decision and saying: Why?

Nobody likes a quitter but if you aren't in it 100% then something needs to be done.

Anyway, I told my upper classman Tom Tuttle and we stayed up one night until 2:00 in the morning.  He said I was crazy to throw away the gift of a lifetime.  He tried and tried to talk me out of it, without success.

The next year Tom was landing a F-84 fighter at Detroit Wayne-Major, now Detroit Metropolitan.

There was a T-33 on the runway and mobile control told him to go around.  When he brought up the gear and flaps, somehow he lost the hydraulic pressure, and the aircraft went into vertical flight near the airport.

It then rolled over on the back, and did a Split-S into the ground.  The flight path looks like the top part of the letter S.

Tom Tuttle was killed.

Roc - that sounds like one neat bird you have there - how old is it - I thought I read where a cockatoo can live a long time.

Bil - maybe your decision was your guardian angel telling you something.  I know we have several pilots on the forum and many people will say it is safer than driving a car.  Only problem is if a car stops running you can always just pull over and call for a tow.

Talk about flying - time seems to be flying by lately.

Remember: life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

Roc:

Thank you.  At least I would sell two copies -- one to you and one to my wife.  But there is also this consideration:

Writing a book is an adventure:
it begins as an amusement,
then it becomes a mistress,
then a master,
and finally a tyrant.

-- Winston Churchill

Regarding that magnificent cockatoo of yours, I recall that you once posted a photograph of it.  You must have others.  Let us see one or two.

Your story about your bird's learning to immitate the howl of your dog and the bark of your neighbor's dog brings to mind this old parrot joke:

A burglar cases a certain home until he is certain that all of the residents have left for the evening.  Upon reaching the home's entrance, he notices a decal on the front door reading, "WARNING!  PEMISES GUARDED BY PARROT!"

The burglar laughs, breaks through the door, and enters the house.  Sure enough, there in the foyeur is a parrot sitting on a perch.

"Stupid bird," the burglar mutters as he moves toward the stairs.

Whereupon, the parrot tilts his head and screeches, "ALL K-9s . . . ATTACK INTRUDER!"

The bird, Gabriel, is about 4 years old now.  They can live anywhere from 50 to 100 years old.  We aren't positive she is a she, as it takes a blood test to determine.  Anyway, here is a photo with what we refer to as her "Pope hat" ;D  She is an Umbrella Cockatoo.

Here is another of her hunkering down on my wife's shoulder because she thought I was going to put her back on her cage.
She will hop on you or grab you with her beak as you walk by to perch on your shoulder if you aren't careful.  That is where the "Velcro Bird" moniker for Cockatoo's comes from as they love to be held.  You have to limit that or they will scream until they are picked up.  That is not a pleasant sound to have to eat your dinner to I can tell you.

Bill,
Thanks for sharing your life altering experience with us.
I don't think it is a matter of quitting; sometimes that
takes more courage: it is simply a business decision
based on current events and gut instincts. Those
decisions should not be second guessed or regretted
in the future--we all do it. A good friend of mine and
a squadron mate who died off the Vietnam coast said
it well: "When an airplane talks to you, you had better
listen to it".

That little comet you saw probably defined your experience
and guided your decision.

We are in northern Michigan right now.  I've been itching to shoot the pistol, but everyday is wind and rain.  There may be a short break in the weather tomorrow.

Our electricity was out 8 hours, so I got to use the new Coleman generator.

Dave:

Those are beautiful photographs!  Given the idyllic setting in which you live, you don't need a pond.  Even so, if you have a spring on your property, it should be possible to construct a pond to your liking.  Otherwise, if your aquifer is shallow enough, you might still be able to consruct a pond in a suitable location and maintain it by a dedicated water well and an automatic pump.  My grandfather did much the same thing years ago on the family farm back in Oklahoma, using a windmill to operate his well pump.

The old man was clever by any standard.  Finding that he had a dependable spring on his homesteaded land, he built his house right on top of the thing and had "running" water in his kitchen long before indoor plumbing was commonplace.  He also built a large cistern beside the house in which he collected and stored rainwater from the roof.  That gave him a backup water supply even in times of drought when he might see his his spring run dry and his well water become murky.

He also dug a combination "root" and storm cellar in the back yard.  In the wintertime, he would cut blocks of ice from the pond, drag them to the cellar by horse-drawn sled, and stack them around the walls.  The ice would last until well into the summer months and provide a passable form of "cold storage" for foodstuffs.

I often think how he would marvel at many of the everyday conveniences which we take for granted these days.

Richard,

My springs are down over the hill - if I did a pond would never see it without taking a hike.

The artifical pond like you said is possible - someday when we have the extra money maybe.

Your grandfather sounds like he was very inventive.  Back in those days many had to be.

On a previous extension of this thread, I posted the following photograph of the bear which a local folk artist ("Granny" of Granny's Birds & Bears) had carved from the stump of a yellow pine tree that had snapped during a wind storm at Critter Creek.  On the ground behind the bear you can see an 8-foot log which had been cut from the downed portion of the tree.

Last weekend, I used our SUV to drag the log around to the fork in the compound's entrance driveway -- one fork leading to Critter Cabin and the other leading to Duck Cabin.  Then, using a 2-ton "Come Along" cable winch anchored to a nearby poplar tree, I hoisted the log into a hole I had dug, secured it with 80 pounds of Quickrete, bolted one of "Granny's" carved eagles on top, and mounted directional signs to the two cabins on the trunk.  Here is the result -- not a bad piece of work for an "old fossil," if I do say so myself.   ;)

I have a true cow story to tell.

Some years ago, the interior ceiling of my brand new van fell down, so I took it to the dealer for repair.

Meanwhile, a pickup truck was sitting next door at the bar.

Inside the cab of the truck, so help me God, was a cow!  In human terms, I would say the size was that of a young teenager.

I quickly learned that a man and woman had stopped for a drink, and secured said cow in the passenger area.

I thought about going into the bar and shaking the hand of a real rugged man, but decided against it.

Shortly after I had met Joyce, I took her on a Sunday drive through the mountains.  Rounding a bend in the road, we came up behind an old dilapidated school bus chugging along at about 15 miles per hour.  At first, I thought my eyes were deceiving me, but surely enough, the bus had been stripped of its seats and was loaded with calves apparently headed for market.

I turned to Joyce and said, "I've never seen that before!"

She just smiled and said, "Didn't you all educate your cows in Oklahoma?  We send ours to school here in Tennessee."

I did see a UFO years ago though - out on a country road it flew right over without a sound.  Maybe a secret goverment craft.  When I got home it was all over the local news and was seen by number of people including some state police.

Roc:

That is a beautiful African Gray!

Since Ghana is one of the countries from which the African Gray originated, why not one of its tribal names?  Here are two:

Gyasi [pronounced, JAH-see], an Akan name meaning "Wonderful One."

Osei [pronounced, oh-SEH-ee], a Fante name meaning "Noble."

If you wanted a name from nearby Nigeria:

Hazika [pronounced, ha-ZEE-kay], a Hausa name meaning "Intelligent One."

Thanks for the African names Richard, I really like Gyasi!  We thought that it would be nice to have an African name for him/her (we think its a she, but you can't tell unless you have a blood test done or it lays eggs :D) but we didn't know any of the languages.  I'll pass those on to the Mrs. and see what she thinks.

It is amazing how fast that bird went from downy feathers and wobbling on the bottom of the cage, to fully feathered and climbing all over the cage and eating seeds and pellets.

Great pics guys.  You can really tell that hawk is a baby looking at his skinny neck and small beak, but the eyes are still so fierce.
Dragonflies have to be my favorite bug.  They come in so many colors and designs.  This time a year at my house they are thick as thieves.  Just look up and you'll see dozens zipping this way and that.  No mosquito bites this year, so I guess they are doing their job.

Nice pics Chris.  The mosquito population has been down last two years - not complaining being in the woods.  Spider population outside though is as high as usual.

Sprayed some poison ivy and also jaggers (as we call them) with Roundup two days ago with six gallons of spray - so far no poison ivy on me.  Joys of living in the woods.

Guess we are too spoiled.  The Mountain Man of long ago probably ate ivy in his salad.

And speaking of cars and car insurance . . . I was rummaging through a box from long-term storage this weekend and found two photographs of the first and second automobiles I ever owned.  (I wish I still owned each one of them.)

And so, my friends, would the subject of our first automobiles -- and those we wish we still owned -- be suitable for this thread . . . or a new thread of its own?  If anyone else is game and will do the same, I'm willing to scan these old prints and attempt to post them here.

Scan away Richard - would like to see those first cars.

My first one was a 1965 American Motors Rambler that I bought in 1969.  The down side was many times when it went over a deep puddle it would stall out.  Never could solve that.  It had some other quirks also.

The good side was the front seat backs would go all the way down.  A good feature for dating.

Sold it to my dad for a work car he could take into the mill.

Alright, Gentlemen, here are scans of photographs of my first two automobiles.

First, my 1954 Triumph TR2, the photograph taken in 1956 in front of my fraternity house when I was a sophomore in college.  (I was apparently annoyed at one of my esteemed brothers for having taken the liberty of planting his behind on the left rear fender.)  To my lasting regret, I sold this little rocket when the Army shipped me out to Germany in 1963.

Second, my 1964 Sunbeam Alpine GT Series III, the photograph taken in 1965 outside my BOQ in Southern Germany.  I had ordered a Triumph TR4 to be delivered in Stuttgart, but it was damaged in transit and the dealer had this little "Fraulein magnet" sitting in the showroom ready to roll.  It was not as quick as a Triumph, but it got me around Europe until the end of my tour of duty when I sold it to a newly arrived lieutenant.

Dan:

Thank you for your comment.  They were great little cars, especially the TR2.  The dealer from which I bought it had raced it for a season, so I was able to purchase it at a price which I could afford on my meager income and tight budget  as a night student in college.  I didn't understand why it was so fast until I had to have a new set of rings installed.  Only then did I learn that the dealer had bored out the cylinders and installed oversized pistons.

And by the way, I should explain why your post appears above mine.  The scanned photographs in my first post were too large and I couldn't seem to reduce them by modifying the message.  I therefore deleted the entire post and started over.  You must have seen the first post with the larger images.

Tom:

Latin would not have beeen one of the "long suits" in my fraternity.   ;)  The so-called "Elders" when I pledged in 1955 were an admirable group of Korean War veterans going to college on the "GI Bill."  There was no hazing of pledges, and the only requirements for membership were basically as follows:

1.  Be a male admitted as a student of the university.

2.  Be an avowed and demonstrable admirer of the "fairer sex."

3.  Be able to drink a reasonable amount of alcoholic beverages without becoming "sloppy."

4.  Be able to pay the fraternity dues.

A greater bunch of men (and characters) I have rarely met.

And by the way, the two "brothers" in the photograph of the TR2 were not Korean War veterans but merely a couple of lowly sophomores such as I was myself.

***

I should amend this post by noting that the fraternity brother who took that photograph of the TR2 was a Marine Corps veteran who served as a "Forward Spotter" in the Korean War -- you know . . . the men who crawled up to the enemy lines and then called in naval gunfire just ahead of their positions.

Richard - oh my - two ''Brit cars'' - amazing!  I had at least two college buddies with TR's back in early 60's and then later a guy I mechanicked for who did hydroplane racing - he had a TR4A.  (he progressed to an Aston Martin Vantage! (yum)).

I am sorely lacking in pics of my old Brit ''steeds'' - tho daresay some prints somewhere of one or two - but no way to know if I can find those.

No one would know it I guess but my first in 1964 was a Morris 8.  I actually shared that with my Mom.  My first own was a split rear window Beetle in about 1967, followed by a newer Beetle.  Then a Triumph Vitesse - nice tho small 1600 six cylnder rush-about!

I got rid of that and got a 1965 Mustang (289) in 1969 - which I LOVED!!!  Toured much of Europe in that.  Sadly a collapse of left front suspension put me off the road badly one day in late 1970.  Pics below of as it was and when wrecked <sob>.

I then went thru several other vehicles, none of which was overly exciting to describe here - but most well OK for me.

Chris:

That was one beautiful Mustang!  It hurts me, even as one who did not own it, to see it the victim of harm's way.

And Gentlemen:

"Start your engines!"  All of you have had first, second, or whatever other automobiles which deserve mention in this magnificent series of "Windows" threads.  Dig around your closets, scan the photographs, and post the images and the stories.

Lord knows, there are a hundred or more stories worth telling with regard to that little TR2 I used to own before my conduct was constrained by joining the United States Army -- such as a certain trip in the summer of 1958 from DC through the southern states into Mexico and up through California and back by the middle route to DC.  (I still have a sunburn scar on my left forearm from that trip, which was taken during the month of August -- just when one should tour the sunbelt in a low-slung convertible.   :P   )

            72 Virgins In Paradise

Seconds after al-Zarqawi was taken out in the airstrike, he was met at the
Gates of Paradise by George Washington, who slapped him across the face
and yelled, "How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped found!"

Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, "You
wanted to end our liberties but you failed."

James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, "This is why
I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!"

Thomas Jefferson was next. He beat al-Zarqawi with a cane and snarled,
"It was evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of
Independence."

The beatings and thrashings continued as George Mason, James Monroe,
Robert E. Lee, Jeb Stuart and 64 other early Americans unleashed their anger
on the terrorist leader.

As al-Zarqawi lay moaning in pain, the Angel Gabriel appeared. The terrorist

leader wept in frustration and whined, "This is not what you promised
us Muslim martyrs."

Gabriel replied, "I told Mohammad there would be 72 Virginians

waiting for you guys in Paradise. What did you think I said?

The brother sitting on the fender of the car was indeed a "Wally Cleaver" type who went on to become a successful executive.  At the time, as I recall, we were both in "hot pursuit" of the same little coed -- and he won.   :o  He was a day student, while I attended classes in the evenings.  Being a night student had its disadvantages, one of them being the limitations it placed on your social life.  (You'd be surprised at how few young ladies were interested in coming over to my bachelor pad after evening classes to watch me study.   :-/)  However, as the Garth Brooks song goes, "Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers."   :D

It is a he Dan -two of them hang out together -we call them "the boys".  In a few more weeks you will start to see them forming flocks - as fall approaches the flocks get larger as the babies grow. Have had some flocks around 30.

Chris - either you used a zoom or your frogs are much tamer than the ones around here.   Great picture!

I'll run a virus scan and try again.

Richard - frog's legs I never tried - along with escargots - I was tempted when in France but somehow the fine wine won the day ;)

Dave - indeed some zoom but also this fella was not fussed by slow movement so - a slow approach to a chouch, then kneel then shuffle - got me close in.  Obliging fella - have one or two more - here's another one - I can be patient, just now and again!

Speaking of NASA I started reading the book below about two days after I shot up Stephen King's book "CELL" - pictures in another thread.

This book DECEPTION POINT, is a real page turner that grabs onto you.  Has NASA, science, glaciers, ocean lore, assassins, politics,  and other stuff in it.  Doesn't use love problems to take up space.

You find yourself wanting to put your R9 into your pocket while reading it in case you have to fight off the assassins - in fact I did - it made the book even more fun.  Even though it has over 700 pages the words are printed large enough to be a comfortable read.  I read it in three days.

I give this book a Rohrbaugh "thumbs up".  Which is better than six GDHP from my R9 that I gave King's book.

The Dogs of War, by Frederick Forsyth

"Dogs of War'' - superb - time I re-read it in fact.

Re Hubble - folks do go here if you haven't - http://hubblesite.org/gallery/ - there are so many exquisite pics and vid's too - beautiful stuff.  Hubble has actually lasted beyond its anticipated life IIRC and has been a great device - so much knowledge gained from it.

I believe there is to be a new telescope launched sometime, which will take over and also do even more.

Space - what a  concept to try and grasp !

Chuck Helps With A Lonely Heart

My mother passed away Easter morning a few months ago.  Her and my father have been an item for 61 years when they started dating in high school.

Being alone without my mom has been very hard on my dad, who is not in the best of health.  To help fill an empty house he decided to get a kitten from the animal shelter.  He has never before had a cat.

Well he picked up "Chuck" (forgot to ask why the name) yesterday afternoon.  The first night Chuck jumped in bed and sleep with my dad.

I met Chuck today - his second day and thinks he already rules the house.

Spencer has not met Chuck yet.

That's a great looking kitten.  I'm sure he will do much to help your father's house from seeming so empty during this difficult period of transition.

And, "Chuck" -- meet "Titi" and "Tut."  (Just watch out for "Tut" until you're a little older -- he's the gray one and has "a typically bad attitude."

There is a picture somewhere at my parents with me as a kid and my dad at Blackwater Falls. During those years my parents couldn't afford vacations that cost too much so we went tenting.  We camped somewhere in that area.  I haven't thought of those falls for years. Richard - I have all my life struggled over that re emotional conflict - used to wonder when my kids were small and came to stay whether them not coming would have made the parting aspect less painful.

Well of course so it would have but - then I would have missed the joy of their company!!  It's a no-win!

Much same with our partners IMO - were we not married one of us would not have to face the loss of the other when the time comes - but look at all the joy that would never have been found.

Lost a cat last year - and it was more than sad but - so many good memories, that on balance the gift that had been given was too precious to have missed, despite the pain of loss.

Just a snippet of atmosphere from Saturday - spent the day at a local guy's ultralight fly-in.  I was providing the entertainment thru the main part of day flying all of my five RC planes with me - loadsa fun for me anyways! :)

As usual late afternoon (and early morning) is when the guys go up most tho the weather was superb that day so not too limiting even during middle of day.

This was one of the last flights as light was going somewhat - oh the freedom of the air!

Chris - nice picture - makes me what to give it a try.

Dan,
What Richard and Chris say is so true.  I feel for the lose of your cat.  My dog Spencer is so tied up with my life I can't even imagine not having him.  It is the same as losing a family member when you make them such.

It is hard to imagine that all who we love will someday pass.  The only person I ever helped pass over was my mom on Easter morning.  Watching and hearing her take her last breathes will always be etched in my mind.  Hard to imagine she is gone.  My dad is in the hospital now with a life threatening condition, and the possibility of losing both parents in three months  just drains your own inner being away.

All a part of life.

Thanks all for the kind words. To leave this world is natural and the way it is supposed to be. Still hard for those left behind. Dave sorry for your loss my prayers go out for you and your dad. Keep your head up. When you really get down to it we are all here for a blink. Dan

Chris flying that thing has got to be exciting. Txaggiechl nice shot of the moon. We bought one of those cheap telescopes and it isn't good for a whole lot. But we do get to see the craters on the moon. I can also use it as a spotting scope to look at the mountain after the leaves have fallen. Dan

And speaking of pets . . .

My step-daughter, the daughter of my beloved little judge, recently bought a Scottish Terrier puppy as a pet for our grandson.  Being a terrier and a puppy, he has been in constant trouble.  One of his latest offenses was to pull down a curtain in the family's den.  The "smoking gun" and the resulting punishment were caught on film.  (This lovely lady is truly her mother's daughter.   :o)

Hahaha - boy Richard does that bring back memories!

My Maternal Grandmother had a ''Scottie'' - called IIRC "Brekkie" - which was in fact owned by my Mother's youngest sister - but all I recall is that the lil' fella was part of the household when we went to stay during my childhood.

Oh my that was - what? - more than 50 years ago - ouch!

And now, if you will permit a proud grandfather a bit of self-indulgence, here is a photograph of the master of that cantankerous puppy:

Richard, Great looking kiddo and puppy. What a team they will make. Someone needs to keep a tight rein on the two of them? ;D

Tom:

"Tight rein" is the right term.  Together, they're a handful.

It's good to be a conventional grandparent -- a lot of enjoyment without too much responsibility.  Joyce says, "It's a time for getting even with your children by spoiling theirs."   ;)

Oh my - wish I felt young enough to water ski again!!!

BTW Dave -

Just noticed our image burden on here - this thread - is up to near 5Mb - so could be a tad large for any dial ups - Brendon perhaps if he still suffers that.

Maybe time to kick off a fresh OMW thread??

Slightly annoying feature of this software is - it treats the whole thread as an entity when loading - and not just the current page - so whole image set gets called!

Dave:

We can't lose the thread.  Intone the benediction, close the camp meeting, and reconvene the congregation for a new revival.

There are at least three novels and four screenplays in these four Outside My Windows threads.

Another annoying "feature" is how the e-mail notification links bring you to the first page of the thread, every time, then you have to click all the way to pg13 to see the new post.  Any way to fix this?

Aggie - yes indeed the link from an email notification is always to start of thread - frustrating sometimes.  This software does not use a ''newpost'' trick like many.

I cheat sometimes and use ''history'' to return to late stage of a long thread and then refresh - or as sometimes happens if enough time has passed - it will auto refresh having sorta ''timed out''

One other thing i have long noticed is - if I have to do an edit - then when I save that the post does not often reflect the change - not until another viewing at a later time!

Oh well - we have to remember that Duane gives us this place and this software is I think a good one for the budget - and so  a case of bite the bullet (9mm of course :) )

Not complaining, I've had a little experience with other BBS software and in the configuration file, there is usually a setting that specifies how the link is created in the notification e-mail (e.g. link to the first post in the thread or the newest post in the thread).

BTW, it would probably save ya'll a good deal of bandwidth as well for multi-page threads.

Cyberposer - welcome and post often - many friends here.

TX - I have never used the email notification.  Threads tend to drift so I just log on and review what is going on.

Richard - beautiful girl - whose boat?

Chris and Guys - just last night I was thinking that Chris would be suggesting going on to Outside My Windows V soon.

If I have a chance this weekend I'll start it off.  Leave some nice posts and pictures for the first page.  Any ideas for a name?

The bandwidth deal Aggie is very much my point - thus right now an approx 5Mb image burden!

I cannot access as actual admin of course so do not know the settings available but it sure would be handy to have a ''new post'' deal with the email notifications - if in fact available.

Dave, this is my favorite thread, one big family. How come you are so busy lately? I thought you had the summer off.
How is your Dad doing? My prayers are still there.

Tom - I have about five weeks off in the summer.

Doctors feel that my dad could not survive an operation given his weak heart so they are going to try and treat his blood infection by medication.  He may be released next week to do the medication IV treatment out of the hospital - we are going to take him to my brothers for awhile since he works from home.  Hope he eventually gets strong enough to go back to his own house.

Have to get up in five hours so better "hit the hay" as we country boys say.

Richard,

That's a great ski picture.  Looks like a lot of fun.  You must be very proud.

My daughter and son-in-law bought a Nautique (Correct Craft) ski boat.  They brought it to our place up north last week, and on the way home the trailer broke down.

They just went to get the repaired trailer, with a new axle, so that gave them another chance for a weekend mini-vacation.
