Title: The old soldier has fallen.
Post by: CaptBW on July 27, 2006, 10:45:23 AM
Sir! The old soldier has fallen. The old soldier has fallen, Sir.

He fought the war to save the world. And he came home.

Now his time is over.

Sir, let us bear him away with grace and dignity.

Fold his flag slowly, Sir. He loved it so.

He was strong. He was true.

Sir, he stood for his family, and he stood for his country.

And Sir, he was my father.

I weep.

I'm sorry for your loss, which is also a loss for us all.  Whether or not we met him or knew him, his deeds not only made the world what it is today, but also became a model for all the generations since.  May he rest in peace.

Soldiers from the greatest generation are fading away
but they will always be in our hearts and souls.

Capt - my condolences Sir.

I mourn the loss of all the old soldiers - so many fought and suffered and so few really were given the thanks due.

I salute them all - past and present.

Capt.

Having lost a mother three months ago and almost my father three weeks ago I can feel your grief.  You have given a fine tribute to you father from a faithful son.

My thanks to all for the kind words and wishes.

My father was to travel to the dedication of the WWII memorial 29 May 2004. Health issues kept him from attending. On that Memorial Day 2004 I told him I will never forget.

I will never forget.

Your tribute to your father was so eloquent that, when I first read it, I thought it was a poem drawn from published literature.  When I read it for a second time, I realized that it was the truest form of poetry -- that written in the present time in memory of a loved one recently lost.

You have honored your father by your words, as he has honored our beloved country by his service.

Take comfort in the memories which your father bequeathed to you, and include them with the bequest which your own heirs receive from you.
