Title: AR-15 Ideas
Post by: Chief-USN on March 12, 2015, 07:12:45 AM
I have a Noveske Lower that has been in my safe for years. I have decided to build it up and give it to one of my "kids" (All in their 30's). So I am trying to make up my mind on components. I just purchased a LWRC 16" Piston Upper Assy w/ threaded Barrel and Mid Legth free floating hand guard, so the upper is taken care of. What I need to decide on now are, Trigger assembly (Going w/ drop in type), optics, BUIS, And Lower components. I am kicking around building out the lower using Nickle Boron coated pieces just for the look and extra lubrication. (Anyone have any experience with these parts?) Any ideas on optics and BUIS? Any Trigger preferences? I am thinking of Timney but am open to other ideas.

Depending on how far you want to go I'm sure that David Tubb has a few ideas, including springs:

Wow! I checked him out. That man can talk about springs!  I may have to call him as my trigger setup will not have user servicable springs and my Upper assembly Group comes with a Buffer spring and bolt matched up by LWRC for the Piston setup. So I am curios as to his thoughts on whether I should do anything with the springs I am sent.

I like my magpul BUIS, for the optics look at the Vortex Strike-fire 2, you can pick them up for sub $200 and they have a life time warranty to include fire. For the trigger that is all on the person firing it, I like a nice 2 stage trigger but to be honest a stock Colt 6920 trigger is ok. I would get a mil spec heavy buffer, tube, and stock over a commercial one, but that is just me. Post some pic when you get it done, and good luck with the parts search!

Are you running the Polymer Magpul BUIS or Pro version?

I have the polymer one right now and it seems to hold a zero, but I also don't use it much other to ensure it's still zeroed. I have the A-frame fix front site right now so only the singe rear site. I am going to change it out  for a black one, as well as the rest of the furniture one day and set the weapon up just as I had in Afghanistan.   If you need both then I would look at the pro, especially if you plan on using them often.

Sounds good. I will look into the Pro. I am on the fence between Magpul or Diamond Head for BUIS. I found and ordered a trigger guard yesterday. It is made by Magpul and Modified by Molon Labe'. Has the USN Fouled Anchor cut into it in gold color. Very unusual touch, it is the same emblem worn by all Navy Chiefs, I like little custom touches. And thanks for serving Bro.

Just ordered my Butt Stock. Took alot of digging but found one that does everything I am looking for. Collapsible, Recoil reduction, rubber pad, 5 sling locations, adjustable cheek pad, battery storage, and picatinny rail
It is made by Fab Defense Called the GL-ShockPCP. Made in Israel. Really a nice piece.

Will do, It will be a while yet for a few reasons. Such as 1. I am not in a hurry, want to find just the right parts , plus it is not a necessity just a fun thing to do. and 2. Most of what I seem to be finding that I want is not available locally as I am not just throwing together a gun. One of the reasons I was looking for a "recoil reduction" type stock was that I am building a piston gun (LWRC) and they tend to kick more than the direct impingement type .

Well, everything is ordered with the exception of Sites, Optics, and Drop-in trigger assy. Alot of companies it seems do not ship in a hurry. (good example is Brownells)

I was just poking around Craigslist this morning and found a guy selling a new set of Diamond Head BUIS.  Took me about 10 minutes to call hime and leave to pick them up. One more thing off my list of needs and saved money! Win Win. Very nice sights. Now just need trigger assembly and optics. (In addition to lower parts I am waiting for from Brownells.

Yup, getting closer, Brownells seems to be my largest hold up. Looking at drop in fire control assemblies now. On the fence between CMC Straight trigger and Timney. CMC has the edge on price right off the bat being $100 cheaper .

Finally got the Brownells parts in, so I can assemble most of the gun now.  Now if I  I can only find my hammer and vice grips......   ;D

Well, the fire control assembly for the AR will be here Tomorrow, I have a CMC Flat drop in assembly on the way. Should have about a 3lb pull. I like the straight triggers for accuracy. Also picked up a Magpul MOE Plus pistol grip. It has a nice tactile feel like Houge, plus a battery/parts storage area inside it. Now searching for optic. Looks like it will end up being either Leupold or Nikon. The adventure continues, but it looks like I will have an operating AR this weekend.

Chief,

I know I mentioned Vortex to you before because that is what I am running (love the warranty), but did you take a look at Redfield yet? Last I heard if was a sub company of Nikon and when looking at the deals out there and handling them at my local retailer they seemed pretty nice for money. I liked them enough I bought a Redfield range finder in January, I am just throwing out some ideas for ya.

Looking forward to some pic's!

hmmm I will have to check them out. They are a subsidiary of Leupold. There are so many optics choices out there for all kinds of money, so I am aiming for best bang for the dollar. Have found some sales at optics Planet that look good.  I am leaning towards a 1-4 Magnification which is a good range for a 223 from close in to 200 Yards or so.

I know how you feel, after a while they all look the same. I need to start a build but every time I find a striped lower I like, another one grabs my intrest, then I just go shoot the one I have. One day I will get around to it, maybe this year even though I said that last year, lol.

Put the AR together last night, feels and looks really nice. Just needs a final piece to operate..... Is a trigger important ?   <grin>  ;)    Getting CMC drop in trigger assy today.  Now if I could just make up my mind about an optic.   So many choices

Well, I keep going back and forth between scopes. For my shooting needs I am thinking 1-4 is all the power I need. I cannot foresee using the AR for anything past a couple hundred yards which is also my home ranges' limit. And I keep finding myself going back to the Leaupold Mark 4 AR 1.5-4 and the Nikon M-223 1-4 . I have not decided on Illuminated reticle or not. Any one have any thoughts on that? Cost difference on Illuminated is about 33%. Also dragging my feet a little waiting on a good sale. Every once in a while the Manufacture throws in a free mount with scope sale and some other deals.

Well I finally picked a Scope for the AR Build. I decided on a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 1.5-4X20 SPR-G Firedot . I picked it due to the overall brightness of the scope plus the Green dot is highly visible if needed and it is built tough. Once I get it mounted I will put some pics up here if I remember how.  :o

I finally got the AR-15 done. I am sending pics now. Gun really turned out well. It should also be noted that the Barrel is threaded for suppressor as well.

Final Build includes:

Noveske Lower
LWRC Upper Assembly (Piston, 16", threaded Barrel)
CMC Drop in Trigger
Molon Labe/Magpul Trigger guard
Diamond Head BUIS
FAB Defense GL-ShockPCP Stock
MagPul MOE-Plus Grip
Leupold Mark AR Mod 1.  1.5-4X20 Optic
Harris Bipod (Added for Range work and Zeroing in the scope)

Taking it out this weekend to the range (I hope)

That was my Goal, nothing on it that is not needed and all parts on it are the best quality.

Took it out the the Range yesterday and ran a hundred rounds through the rifle. I added a Harris Bipod to the gun as well. I was surprised and pleased to see that the First shots showed up on target at 100 Yards. Made zeroing in the scope much easier Just had to make small adjustments to the elevation and windage and was able to fire nice tight groups on a regular basis. Very nice setup, everything worked as advertised/planned. Brought gun home, cleaned it up (Love piston AR's) and put in safe. Looks like this project is done. hmmmm, what's next........?????  8)

Well, I can't stand it, I a going to break down and buy a silencer for this Piece. Researching them now. Should take 2-4 months to complete the order as I have to wait for the US Gov.
