147gr ammo?

I've been doing some reading and it seems as if most are using 124gr Gold Dots.

Does anyone use 147gr ammo in their R9's? I don't know about the 124's, but a 115gr bullet relies on velocity to do its job, but the 147 relies on its weight to gain adequate penetration; This should be paramount with the R9 having such a short barrel. Anyhow, is anyone running 147gr ammo in their R9, if so, what brand?

Is there a particular ammo out there I should avoid completely with the R9? Some seem to indicate the R9 can be picky about what it's fed.

I've only had this R9 for a brief time but I've already learned:

PREMIUM GUN = PREMIUM AMMO

Here is a quote from an email I got from Rohrbaugh that should help:

"We recommend Winchester Silvertips 115 Gr. STHP and Speer Gold Dot 115 Gr.
HP for carry and Federal American Eagle 115 Gr. FMJ for plinking 124 Gr. may
also be used for defense and plinking.

You should be able to put through any standard 9mm ammo.  Although 147 can
be standard it will beat up the gun with extended use is not recommended.
Keep in mind that this is a custom gun and some guns don't like certain
ammo.  As an important note remember never to use any +P or reloads only
standard 9mm.

Try the ammo suggestions and if you still have problems please
give us a call. We will be out of the office from the 27th through the 30th.

From all the data I've seen the 115gr is the only one that opens fully when shot from the R9.

I have always used Speer 115 grain GD ammo in all of mr R9s over the years. It has always been 100% reliable. It is also readily available for me as well.

This does not really answer your question, this is what works for me.

Some R9s are finicky and sow are not. You need to find the ammo that works best in your PUP!

I carry the Winchester Ranger LE 147gr. they function fine in my
but mine has worked with any ammo I have used.

Being an adherent of the "bigger rock" school of thought, I used to load my R9 with 147-grain Remington Golden Sabers. Although I never had a problem with that load, when I started carrying an HK P7 as a primary with the R9 in the backup role, I changed over to 124-grain ammunition for both pistols. The P7's gas-retarded recoil system was designed around the 115/124-gr. NATO cartridge and can have its timing thrown "off kilter" by the heaver round.

I now reserve the 147-grain fodder for the Glock Gen4 G17 I purchased for my wife.

When number 2 came in, the only premium ammo in my ammo locker was 147 gr Rem Golden Sabre and they tested out without a hitch.  Needless to say, that is what is in it now.

However, since Dire Straits has posted some new info from the factory, I will switch to a lighter round after ample testing.

I still have two boxes of the 147 grain Rem Golden Sabres that I got early on and never tried them in the R9.  They will become the diet of the recently acquired Glock 17 Gen 4.

Those two boxes won't last long with the 33 rd mag!    :)

I've hated them since they first came out.  
What a gyp!

I first saw them in 1979.  
I bought my first Model 29 and negotiated for 1 box of ammo.  And Ray, of Ray's Sporting Goods in Dallas, handed me one box of Hornady 20 round ammo.  
I hit the roof!  "What, this is NOT a box ammo! "  I called him a racial slur and threatened to walk(my family had bought A LOT of guns from him).  
So he hands me another box of twenty.

From that day on the ammo industry has been scamming us.

Probably a choice of two, thinking they are doing us a favor:
10 round auto pack  for $25
or
6 round revolver pack   $19
