Title: PUP
Post by: LeonB570 on November 14, 2005, 01:24:43 AM
I notice that many participants in this forum refer to their R9 as their "PUP".  At least that is my impression.

What does this stand for?  As a newcomer who is waiting patiently for his R9s, I have not encountered that abbreviation before.  I have seen "BUG" as "BackUp Gun".  Does "PUP" stands for "Pocket Undercover Pistol" ?

Maybe one of you "old timers" can help this newbie learn the "cool" slang.

Best Wishes,
LeonB570

Leon:

Welcome aboard.

As I recall, it was Chris ("R9SCarry") who first coined the nickname, "pup," for the R9.  Chris is a big-bore enthusiast for whom the .44 Magnum is a modest caliber.   ;)  I think he intended "pup" to stand for "puppy," as in "not one of the big dogs."  He'll probably see your post and check in before long.

Leon,

Welcome to the forum.  Glad you are here.

PUP stands for Personal Undercover Pistol.

Just kidding, but Chris may have been thinking that.

I thought it was like a pup: something small that gave you
warm fuzzies when you held it and looked at it.

..."happiness is a warm gun..."  (shakes head)  At least I'm not the only one that gets attached...  The main problem is I like my SP101, but I can't find a use for it

I think you just hit on it AgMan; guns are like pups
because they don't have to be useful for you to love
them.

In the guitar world, a 'pup'  is an electric Pick Up. I was very confused for a while;^)...

I love my SP101 in 9mm, and MY use for it is to shoot a lot of bulk Speer Gold Dot HP (115gr.). My R9 will never use a thousand rounds, so the SP101 fits the bill... The more I shoot the 9mm round, the more I believe it's the round for me.  I now lust for a Warthog in 9mm.  I have one in .45ACP and it's fantastic.  With one in 9mm, my 10+1 .45ACP goes to something like 17+1.  Nice...

Hey Cal, are going to the theory that one good shot does it or that volume shots are better.  ??? ::)
Me, myself and I go by the thought that one good shot of major caliber will do the trick or is it two are better? ;D
A warthog is a good gun but two are better, they need a buddy!! :D

What's a warthog?  (In reference to guns, I know what one is in reference to African Plains.)

If you mean it needs a R9 as a buddy, no problem. My R9 is my main gun and the Warthog is the back up! Of course I believe in one good shot. But what if there are 18 bad guys;^) Should I give up;^)
Of course I'm teasing, with a very big grin on;^) Hey, we NEVER need a good excuse to buy another gun. In case Armeggeddon is coming, ya know?...

Leon - welcome aboard :)

Yes I do claim to have been the one to coin the term ''Pup'' - if I bothered to look back at my first posts here some 18 months ago I might even find the first time of use!!

It was and still is I guess a term of affection for something so diminutive - not a full grown ''hound dog'' like say a 1911 - just a wee lil' pup with lots of personality.

I do not recall dreaming that up - as in looking for a nickname - it just ''came out'' when writing!  I don't either think I am treading on any toes over claiming the origin of pup either - as I had not heard it before - it is therefore I think something I started just on this board here.

Seems to have stuck ;D ;)

Thanks everybody for the information.  I like the nickname even more with some knowledge of its origin.

Now, another quick question from a newcomer.  How do the Rohrbaughs pronounce their name.  Is it Roar-baw, or Roar-bow, or Roar-bok, or something else?

Thanks for the help.

Best Wishes,
Leon Boirgman

Leon - haha - we had this exact question some while ago - and I expect a search for it would be tricky too.

I forget what the general concensus was actually but I still say - "Ro-bar".  It's now a habit - bad or otherwise ;D

I'll tell you how to pronounce it if you'll tell us how to pronounce your
last name!

(psst-it's pronounced "Rohrbaugh";^)

When we heard Karl on the video tape, that's seems to be how he said it:  "Ro-bar"

Contrary to our original thinking that it was roar baw, roar like a lion, and baw like a sheep.

I am so pathetic, I'm replying to my own post!

OK, smart aleck Steve (me) hit the send button too soon.
I'm not meaning to tease you, honest!

Say Roar Bahhhh...

Leon - I am tempted to see your name as ''Bergman'' in my mental ear - but look at it as a New Jersey - ''Boygman'' LOL!

Thanks again everybody.

From my several years of German many, many years ago at the University of Houston (MS in 1959), I wanted to say Roar-Bahh.  But some clerk at a gun shop told it was Roar-Bow.  My tongue fought me all the way when I tried to say it like that. However, many old country names got twisted around either intentionally or by the accidents of local pronunciation, so I was ready to accept it if I had to.

Roar-Bahh feels so much more natural, and for that I am very grateful.

My name, Borg-Man, is pronounced pretty much as it is spelled, with no pairs of adjoining vowels or silent g's to twist ones tongue around.

By the way, my local Firearms Dealer is supposed to get my R9s in tomorrow (November 16), so I should have it soon!

Best Wishes,
Leon Borgman

Well, I don't know how we came up with this topic again, but I spent a day with Eric and he pronounces it "Roar-baw".
