Greetings,
I'm seeking enlightment as to how and when you remove your R9 from a pocket carry, front or back pocket while driving or just sitting. Up to now I've carried a PPk, in a Fobus Paddle, and removed it while I was going on a long drive. Usually if I got out at a rest stop, I would remove it from the holster and put into my back pocket, once I've arrived at my destination back into the holster and IWB. Those of you that have been carrying the R9, could maybe give me some knowledge on this subject. Do you keep the piece in your pocket while driving? Do you sit on it if it's a back pocket carry? I believe somewhere in this forum, I read a comment about just that, but did a search and could not find it!
Is there a preference front or back, or is that just a personal choice?
Any comments or advice passed along would be greatly appreciated.

For one thing I'm a big guy and would not want to sit on my R9 just because. The gun would probably be fine, but back pocket carry is just not my thing.
I use a variety oh holsters and places to carry my R9. I have always been a "Vest Guy"...even long before I got my CCW. So I have a selection of vests which allow for easy access while driving in the car. I'm also a "Bag Guy"...and therefore have a selection of side carry bags and belly pouches which again, allow me easy access while driving. Then I am also a fan of loose fitting cargo-type pants and shorts which allow me to carry front pocket with my RJ Headley holster. This is perhaps more difficult to access while driving, but not impossible.
Bottom line is you need to play around with different carry methods for your R9 until you have found what works for you...which will depend on a lot of things like your body build, tools (holsters & clothing) at hand, and your life style. I will say that, having carried larger guns CCW, finding ways to carry my R9 has been a lot of fun...there are just so many things you can do with this gun, and for me it continues to evolve...TW<<

I will usually have a thing or two to say about pocket carry...
I am a big proponent of pocket carry generally, and front pocket carry in particular.
One of the advantages of front pocket carry is the ability to have your hand on your gun while still maintaining a non-threatening posture. This is lost with rear pocket carry -- its not any different than carrying IWB.
The disadvantages of rear as opposed to front? I don't like sitting on a gun either. The R-9 would probably take it...but I don't like it. I also find the draw to be more difficult. Rear pockets are usually a lot tighter than front pockets and its harder to get that firing grip while still in the holster.
The only real advantege of rear pocket carry is that it is somewhat more accessible with your weak hand if necessary--IF you are young enough and limber enough to do it.
I say -- go with the front pocket.
As for the car, I usually keep my pocket gun in my pocket, but have another (larger) gun in the car. If the fight starts in the car while I am still seated, I go for the car gun. If everthing gets dislodged due to spirited driving or a not so accidental accident, or if I have to bail out of the car fast, I still have the pocket gun.

The only really good R9 pocket carry for me is - front pocket - and that with the Cabellas pants that have a large patch pocket. The gun is not too ''locked in'' even when sitting.
I do tho wear jeans most of all and then, R9 is usually BUG anyways - I'll use either ankle rig, Kevin's small belt slide, next to primary - or even resort to a fanny pack.
As has been stated - body build, vehicular type, in fact just life-style - do very much dictate choices. I can say tho that for me, rear pocket is never!!!

Very good points from everyone. If one is in the car and need to draw, carrying the R9 in a cross draw either IWB or OWB is great. A vest is also good in all conditions. I got use to back pocket carry with a Seecamp, but believe front pocket carry is better all around. A fanny pack with chord coming out of it for a radio or CD player or MP3 player hides the carry even better. Tom

I carry my R9s exclusively in my right front pocket and I don't feel the need to remove it while sitting, whether at my desk or out on a drive in the car.

I carry my R9s in the right front pocket. My holster is a Hedley.

Many thanks to all of you that responded to this inquiry.
As expected the information was informative, and gave me greater insight as to the many ways to carry a concealed weapon.
It's a very comfortable feeling to know that you are part of a group that you can get a straightforward and intelligent answer from.
When you ask a question of this forum you can bet you'll get a answer from the right end of the horse :) and not like so many other gun forums! I sure it has a lot to do with the commonality we all share.
I guess now,-- I'll have to get another holster from R.J., when he is up and running again. And give more thought to wearing my vest when I'm moving about. As a matter of fact I may have to change my whole wardrobe! ;D

I agree with you that a great group of people frequent this Forum. I suspect that much of the credit should be given to the quality of the Rohrbaugh pistols and to the diligence of the Administrator in policing the Forum's content.

When I worked narcotics (on the side of the police of course), my unmrked unit always had an ankle holster around the steering column. The Glock 27 couldn't be seen from outside the car because the weight of the gun always kept it below the column. Very fast presentation.

Thanks for the reply, that is a great idea of the hide gun on the steering column. But if I were to do that in my area, and were to ever be pulled over and revealed where I kept my ccw, they'd have the " swat team" down on me in a nano-second! Unless of course I was a current or former Leo, and than I might be extended professional courtesy. And I do not mean that statement to be sarcastic, my whole family are practically all into law enforcement. Most of the law enforcement community I've been exposed to, seem to frown on the general public carrying a ccw no matter how qualified they are. The laws in this state are very stringent regarding a ccw, I don't know how they are in other states, but it wouldn't take much of a infraction to lose your license to carry in my state.
Kerry, on the bright side, I can always ankle holster my piece to the column on my old Ford tractor when I'm running the brush hog, ....we have had ( supposedly ) rabid coyote's running around in this area and although I'm sure the R9 would do the job, I don't believe I'd want to get that close!

Hey Fred, I'm from south Louisiana (Cajun Country). As long as you don't shoot at the police, its not against the law. People have been carrying here long before concealed carry permits.You know "better judged by 12 than carried by 6" or "easier to seek forgiveness than ask permission"!

Kerry, Whats the deal on New Orleans? Its against city law to have a gun, however they advise tourists to have a gun in their car (which is like their home),go figure. New Orleans is in trouble-trade shows are not coming back because of all the crime,ie THE SHOT SHOW. The bad guys are getting no billed from the grand jury!

Oh, you thought "The Big Easy" was part of Louisiana. I certainly wouldn't go to N.O. without a gun and several friends. Unfortunately, New Orleans has a central lock up, where litter bugs are in the same cell with dog and mother rapers. As long as you are discreet in carrying the weapon and don't use it for idle threats, I would think its always worth the risk to protect you and yours.

Sage advice Kerry, the city of Detroit is the main reason I applied for my ccw the moment it became legal, anytime I had to go into that area I always carried, with the exception of jury duty,.........and that was a real scary situation!.....I guess more so now, than before.
I envy people that live those states that have the kind of leniency you enjoy, of course I could be living in N.J. than I'd really have something to be upset about.
By the way the $200 rebate was not funny,....my heart dropped to the floor!

I do the front pocket carry thing..Sometimes in the dead of winter I move it to coat pocket,still in the holster..
Whatever works at the time.. ;D

I move mine (pistol, that is) from right rear pocket carry to the zippered area of my Carhartt bibs while I'm driving. Maybe I'm cursed, or maybe I'm lucky that I don't have to wear a suit or such for my line of work.... My method of carry works for me, and works, of course is the operative word here. ;)[glb][/glb]
