Sig P290 oh my!!!
« on: June 21, 2012, 04:04:24 AM »
I'm a BIG Glock, Sig, Smith and Colt fan.
I've had my eye on the M&P Shield for a
short while now. Well, I was in the local
Academy Sports this weekend buying
ammo and the Sig Sauer P290 was on
sale. Its typically $759 retail and $559
from the interweb if you have an FFL.

I don't have an FFL so I'm at the mercy
of retailers like most mortals. Oh, didn't
I mention that the Sig P290 with Night
Sights, Laser, Holster and two Magazines
was on an unadvertised sale for.....$479?

Well it was. Guess who owns another Sig?
I think I sprained my hand getting my AMX
out super fast.
The Sig is smaller than it looks. I was holding
out for a .40 Shield or Baretta Nano in .40 S&W
but you know..........I'm only human, enjoy the
photos.

Bill:

Those provide a good photographic comparison of the two pistols. Thank you for posting them. Good shooting with that lasered Sig, and take care of that beautiful Rohrbaugh.    8)

Yah, the Sig is like a Chevy and the PUP a Mercedes.
The PUP feels slimmer in the slide and wider in the
grip. The way I like it and the Sig feels top heavy
in the slide and waaaay to slim in the grip. I have
a Hogue sleeve on order for the Sig grip. It would
be great if someone made a laser as well integrated
into the PUP frame as the Sig has. I'd buy one in a
heartbeat.

Man what a killer deal on that Sig!  Congrats.

Not quite a frame mount per se, but here is Rohrbaugh's
answer to a laser.  Go to bottom of page.

Yah Reinz, I had seen that. Waaaaaaay to efin big.
The brothers Rohr design an extraordinary PUP but
get a fail on the laser. If they figured out how to
implement a Guide Rod Laser with the same level
of simplicity as the rest of their pistols they wouldn't
be able to keep up with demand.

And a daylight visible green laser, not no stinkin'
weak red excuse.

Gotta agree with ya there Billib.  That laser, that I know of has not been talked about on the forum as far as a range report.  The only talking about it that  I have is seen is one time in the classifieds.

Reinz, on the one hand the brothers Rohr
are brilliant for designing a laser that makes
their PUP pocket friendly on the other hand
it wouldn't work for me. I think by its apparent
lack of interest it doesn't work for others as
well.

Make it a Guide Rod Laser and use a Mercury
Switch so when the PUP's Barrel is down its OFF.
When held in any other position, its ON, that works
for me.

Would that work for you? Would that work for
anyone else?

I find the Grip Panels of the P290 to be
borderline painful. They're like Sand Paper
on steroids. Here's a photo of the Hogue
Grip Sleeve saving the day.

Bill:

That's a very interesting idea. I don't know, however, about a mercury switch. They're so bloody sensitive that I wonder if one of them would retain reliability under the repeated stress of the R9's recoil. Also, if the laser would be inactivated when the barrel was pointed down, would that not be a disadvantage in a situation, say, where you might be at the top of a stairwell in your home at night with a BG firing at you from the lower floor? (But I'm no engineer . . . just a semi-retired lawyer.  :-\ )

I have a LaserMax sight mounted as the guide rod for a 1911. As you know, that brand is activated by a pivoting ambidextrous switch which also serves as the pin of the slide stop. I don't know if the R9's recoil assembly is large enough to accommodate a laser mechanism or whether the barrel pin could be adapted to serve as the switch. Given the cost of the 1911 LaserMax, a smaller version would probably be as expensive as the R9 itself. Therefore, I wonder of a pressure-activated grip-mounted laser sight, such as the Crimson Trace design, might be the better solution.

The entire subject is interesting. Thanks for raising it.

Hi Richard S, thanks for your input and experience.
I recently purchased a Red Laser for very
little money from Amazon that is self contained in
an aluminum tube not much bigger than the PUP's
Guide Rod. It attaches to the front of the Trigger
Guard.

Since their is no simple way to affix an external
On-Off Switch to the PUP I surmized that a Mercury
switch could be used. A timer circuit could keep the
Laser on for a few minutes so the scenario that you
stated could be avoided. As far as using actual Mercury
for the switch, I have a car alarm that uses some type
of solid motionless mechanism in place of a Mercury
Switch that "feels" for the car being jacked up so that
a thief could steal your tires or tow your car off.

Their are ways to overcome the obvious problems in
implementing such a Laser design it just take money
and of course the desire to do so.

With that explanation, the concept becomes even more intriguing.

Very interesting Billib.

Sounds like if there is a will, there is a way; or if there is enough money....

Right Reinz, a Laser  for the PUP would never sell in
large enough numbers for most companies to be
interested. Maybe the company who created the
current PUP Laser would one day do it. I'm not
quite shure why it was developed. I doubt that it
sells in enough numbers to have been very profitable.

Is the the new model with the re-strike  capability (290RS) ?
if not that could explain the lower price, many places are looking to move the old models because they had issues with light strikes and Sig reissued the 290 with the RS on the slide.

The only engraving on the Slide has
"SIG SAUER P290"   no "RS".
So, whats the likelyhood a Baretta
Nano will have restrike capability added?
Maybe I can get a closeout deal on one
of those to.

One of the things I'm not crazy about is
that the P290 isn't a TRUE Double Action.
