Title: The New Auto Mag Company
Post by: MRC on September 21, 2017, 12:42:01 PM
I never thought this would happen but the New Auto Mags are in production as I type this.

They started production with a "Limited Founder's Edition" which is an Auto Mag with an 8 1/2" VR barrel, polished upper, and wood grips to mimic the gun Dirty Harry used in "Sudden Impact".  The Founder's Edition is limited to 50 guns and is sold out.

A friend of mine who is consulting with the owners forwarded these 'work in process' photos to me.

The gun is the 8 1/2" version and the barrels on the mat are the 6 1/2" style.

Looking Good!

The Founder's Editions are priced at $3995.00.

The standard 6 1/2" models have a wait list at $3495.00.

Here is a link to their website, click on store for gun and part prices.

That is a man's gun as opposed to a gentleman's pistol.

I've had Auto Mags for 20+ years and they really are pretty easy to shoot. With comparable loads, the Auto Mag is easier to shoot well than my 6", 629 Smith. The 357 AMP is the same case as the 44 and is really a nice shooting round.

I had to put the money up front for the Founder's Edition and I talked with the owner a long time before ordering.  He seems like a great guy.  I know several of the guys who have been helping without pay and they assured me everything is alright with the deal.

The owner has been writing checks now for 2 1/2 years without any income, I wish him well.  It is something he has always wanted to do and is not in it for the money.

Because of health issues I have been thinning out my collection and am TRYING to not buy any more handguns, well except for the four Stars and a S&W, 13 BUT I have always wanted one. How long, time wise, is the list?

That is actually cheaper than my Cabot but a LOT cooler.  MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thanks Eric, I have had Auto Mags for over 20 years and I am still fascinated with them.  I never thought I would see them come out again.  The owner has been at it for 3 years and is just shipping now.

I emailed him to see where my AMP sat in the lineup and he said I was in the first 20 and it should go out in a couple of days.  With any luck I should have it by the end of the week.

The first run that they put out is a special edition with the 8 1/2" barrel with wood grips trying to copy the gun Dirty Harry used in "Sudden Impact".  I think they had about 75 barrel blanks so that is how many they are running.  They are calling it "The Founder's Edition" and will have special serial numbers "FE-XX".  I think it is a good idea for the start up of an existing design.

For the movie "Sudden Impact" they produced a blank firing AMP to use in the movie serial number CLINT-1.  They also produced a firing copy and gave it to Clint Eastwood and as far as anyone knows, he still owns it.  It is serial number CLINT-2.  A friend of mine in Florida bought the movie gun and still has it.

Here are some cool pictures.  Larry Grossman is the man who hand built the "CLINTS".

I might try to find "Sudden Impact" this weekend as it's been years since I've seen it.

Thanks for the pictures

MRC you are now on my #%%&*%$## list. Now I HAVE to get one.  It was always on my short list not it just jumped to #1. As to price. I will do what I usually do when the 'boss' asks the price. I just cut the price in half and lie. ;) ;)

p.s. the black guy with the shotgun is the same actor in a earlier 'Harry' movie. He was the robber that Clint said to " Did I fire 5 or 6? Do you feel lucky."

Production is very very limited.  You deal direct with the company and you have to be on their wait list.  They email when they have an opening in production and you take it or leave it then.

Here is their website, it should explain things there or you could call or email them.  They will be at SHOT this week.

Look them over closely Norm, the AMP's aren't for everyone.

They are big and noisy and not a gun to shoot indoors if that is what you are limited to.  They have been a handloading project for most of their life but the new owners have SBR out of Georgia selling new ammo for $50 a box and it has been getting good reviews.

I have read reviews from two owners so far and they have been impressed with the quality and the functioning.  I was told by Patrick that mine would ship last week but I have not heard anything.  Getting ready for SHOT could have slowed things up.

I have never shot an Anaconda but I have owned and shot both 6" and 8 3/8" Smith 629's and the Auto Mags are easier to shoot with full power loads.

The advantage of a revolver is you can download to get a more user friendly load.  The AMP's are recoil operated and one can only go so low and still get 100% functioning.

They are completely different firearms.  The Wildey is gas operated and the AMP's are recoil operated.

Wildey did chamber the 44 AMP cartridge though.

I like the looks of the Auto Mag better...an elegant and refined design.

I would have to agree.  There is not much to like about the Wildey's looks in my opinion.

The main problem with the Wildey is that the grips are just too large for about 95% of the population.  It was initially designed to hold a double stack magazine of 9mm Winchester magnums for which it never got chambered for.

The New Auto Mags look somewhat different.  The barrel and rib are machined from a single blank.  On the Old AMP above the rib is welded on.  I like the looks of the Old AMP's better.

Have you considered a Excel Arms Accelerator pistol to complement it?  That gets you shooting lower cost ammo in a package that is very similar.  (The two companies may be connected somehow)

The New Auto Mags are being built at Excel Arms.  Larry Grossman worked for Harry Sanford who designed and built the Auto Mags until Harry died.  He then went to work for Excel.  The two Companies were not connected until Auto Mag decided to move the assembly to Excel because Larry would not go to South Carolina.

Ammo is available at $50 a box and it is good stuff.

The AMP's have always been a hand load situation and I have shot and loaded AMP's for over 20 years.  I have shot less than 1 box of factory Corbon in all that time.

One thing to remember, this is a gun that you don't go out and fire 100's of rounds through.  Generally with a AMP or a Wildey, I shoot 20 or 30 rounsds and that's enough.

Larry is the Guru on anything Auto Mag.  Here he is at the SHOT Show.

Grossman has hid from anything Auto Mag since Harry Sanford died in '97.  He would talk to very few people about the pistol or even help anyone.  There just were not many parts around and very few Gunsmiths to work on them and his expertise was needed.

I was surprised that they even got him to go to the SHOT Show to tell you the truth.  While there he has done numerous video's and interviews and really looks like he is enjoying himself.  He seems to be really enthused again about the Auto Mag.

The $1000 loss per gun was for the first 2 or 3000 that were made in Pasadena.      It was at that point that they declared bankruptcy.  The guns sold for $275 retail a $217 wholesale.  By the time thy got all the numbers added up they arrived at the -$1000 figure.  Lots of mistakes, big development costs, and lots of unuseable parts.

They went on as TDE and still never could make money.  Harry Sanford wanted to keep the price low and numbers high.

Harry Sanford seemed to make money on bankruptcy's.

I just copied and pasted this from Wkipedia to show all the companies Harry went by:

Between 1971 and 2002 the Auto Mag would wear eleven different names:

AM, Pasadena, California (Made in Pasadena, Calif.)

TDE, North Hollywood, California (Made in El Monte, Calif.) There was never a North Hollywood factory.

TDE, El Monte, California (Made in El Monte, Calif.)

TDE, El Monte, California, High Standard (Made in El Monte, Calif.)

TDE, El Monte, California, Lee Jurras (Made in El Monte, Calif.) Most custom work by Lee Jurras

TDE, El Monte, California, Kent Lomont (Made in El Monte, Calif.) Custom work by Kent Lomont

TDE / OMC, El Monte, California (Made in El Monte, Calif.)

AMT, Covina, California (Receivers made in Covina, Calif. and guns assembled in Irwindale, Calif.)

AMC, Covina, California (Receivers made in Covina, Calif. and guns assembled in Irwindale, Calif.)

AM, Irwindale, California (Made in Irwindale, Calif.)

AM, Sturgis, South Dakota (Some made in Hesperia, Calif. and some were made in Sturgis, S.D.)

He lived a good life and was said never to be without plenty of money for personal items.

I do not know of anyone named Lee Jurras being connected to S&W.

Lee Jurras was a noted handgunner and the owner of Super Vel Ammunition that really brought hollow points and high speed ammunition to handguns.  He was worldwide distributor for Auto Mag for two years and was an accomplished handgun hunter.  Harry Sanford gave him an Auto Mag chambered in 357 AMP and Lee took a documented 119 head of game on four continents with it not counting the hundreds and maybe over a thousand jack rabbits.

In 1979 he was awarded the Outstanding American Handgunner Award.

He and Kent Lomont mentioned above were from your state of Indiana.

That comes right off the Auto Mag website and was emailed to all of us that have AMP's on order.

They have shipped quite a few guns to those who do not want to wait for the improvements that are being tested right now.  All those that have shot their AMP's are very satisfied with them and say the accuracy, workmanship, and finish is outstanding.

I am a collector and I have a lot of AMP's already and decided to wait for the all the improvements before I take delivery.  Patrick, the owner, must have a lot more patience than I would have.

The New Company had all kinds of start up problems but the owner stuck with it.  He was not going to turn out a bad product and treated me and all the others who had orders fairly.

They started shipping the day before Thanksgiving and I managed to get the first wo out the door at there new facility in South Carolina.  They are much nicer than I ever expected.

I have not had a chance to shoot them yet.

The dealer wanted to get rid of the pistol I posted.  Dropped a couple hundred by me just asking to take a picture.  Don't know a lot about them, is that a good price on the .22LR version?

They are just a long barrel version of the AMT Lightning which is a Ruger Mark 2? copy.

They came with a wooden box and in good shape with box they run $2000 to $2500.  They are in high demand but they never impressed me.

There is a lot of info if you google Baby Auto Mag.

Mike

You have probably already seen this but here is one that has been on there for a while as his price is way high.  He could probably get $2500 if he lowered the price.

That is the box they came in, very poorly built but everybody wants one for their BAM.

If you can get the one for $1600 or less, you are getting a fair deal if it is not all beat up.  They shoot good.

Thanks MRC,

It's not something that is of any real interest to me right now.  Doesn't fit any niche I'm collecting currently.

I posted it on here because I know some have an interest in these types of handguns, and wanted to get opinions on it.

If you, or anyone else, had posted that you had to have it for your collection I would do all I could to put the two parties in contact with each other.

Mike, this might interest you.

This Auto Mag is 45 years old believe it or not, made in 1975 by the late Lee Jurras.  Lee owned Super Vel Ammunition Company back in the 70's and is credited for developing the modern hollow point pistol ammunition.  Lee hunted all over the world and was awarded the Outstanding American Handgunner award.  Here is an article written about Lee by John Taffin.

  https://americanhandgunner.com/discover/lee-jurras/#:~:text=The%20AutoMag,which
%20was%20basically%20a%20rimless%20.&text=357%20Auto%20Mag%20capable%20of,a%2015
8%2Dgrain%20jacketed%20bullet.

It is chambered for the 357 Auto Mag cartridge which is a rimless 44 Magnum necked down to 357.  158 grain bullets are propelled at close to 2000 fps from the 8 1/2" barrel.

I really like the case, it just screams 1970's.  The brace/buttstock dovetails into the pistol grip and is removeable.  This SBR is covered under Curio and Relics by the ATF.

Lee designed this for long range pistol hunting and targeted the "Executive Type Hunters".

That is a fine looking shooting iron MRC.

I do kinda like the stock/brace.  It definitely dates it, LOL.

Late 70's was when I was just discovering shooting.  Dad had a subscription to G&A and I wore them pages out.  Always liked getting some cheap old gun magazines at the gun shows he took me to.  They were filled with stories like the one you linked to.

The brace is really well made.  I do not know what kind of stainless they used but it is extreme rigid and all the holes keep the weight down.  It might have been heat treated, I know the guy that made it, I'll have to talk to him.  The dovetail into the grip is about perfect, rigid with no wobble.

The one trouble with it is it is too long for me.   :(

That article has some great old pictures of some famous handgunners and writers.
