Title: STI/Bob Cogan .45ACP

Just received this one back from Bob Cogan of APW.(http://www/apwcogan.com)
Briefly: it started out as a standard STI Trojan 5" barrel.
Then:
hard-chrome plating.
trigger work.
complete work-over, disassemly, polishing, beburring, lubrication and reassembly.
new wood grips.
new magazine guide.
replace 5 inch with 6 inch STI barrel and add supporting ramp.
custom-built single chamber 4-port compensator head.
Burris red-dot optical sight - quick acquistion and the supreme solution for those of us who are a bit older, with eyesight difficulties.

I think it looks and feels terrific. Haven't fired it yet. Going out to 'The Range' this Sunday, with friends (and other guns AND the Rohrbaugh) to try it out.
200 GR semi-wadcutter .45 rounds. Should make nice, neat (fairly large) holes in things.

That's one sweet looking piece, something to sure be proud of.

It makes me miss my STI Trojan.   :'(

I can claim no particular expertise, other than the reliance on those who know far more than I, and who can and have 'walked the walk', including that other 'talking' part. That, and since I have somewhat of a physics, math and engineering background, I feel I can reasonably recognize good engineering, design and fabrication. For example, if you talk to someone who claims to be 'into' audio tape recording, and he doesn't instantly  know and appreciate the difference between a portable Sony and a Nagra, then one should just smile and be courteous, and change the subject.
(Witness the 'Taurus vs. the Rohrbaugh' conversation elsewhere on this forum).
All that said, all credit goes and should go to Bob Cogan at APW. There are very few like him - not only skilled, experienced and supremely knowledgeable -- but also a good, fair, honest, decent hard-working man. To this country's detriment, I think these are getting harder to find.

Nice looking piece.  What are your opinions of the Burris Red Dot? I am looking for one for my Nighthawk Predator.
Had it narrowed down to Leaupold Delta Point and Trijicon RMR.

Chief-RSN:
I will let you know on Sunday, which will be the first chance I get to shoot it. Bob C. recommended this unit as it's waterproof, easy to mount solidly, and in his opinion functioned just as well as other units costing more. It surely makes it easy to acquire the target, and is very comfortable for those of use with eyesight which makes it very difficult to manage any focusing changes between front/rear sight and target.

Oh, my - what happened to your STI?

Loved everything about it except the caliber.

It was a 40.

Did not like the snappy sharp kick vs  hard push of a 45.

I'm just a 45 guy, old habits die hard.

So I sold it to my brother, at least it is in the family.

Best factory trigger ever!

Sorry I've been away so long. It's unfortunate when work interferes with more intetesting things...
Like, some new mods (new CITES-compliant elephant ivory grips and the Burris red dot sight) on the STI  .45 .The others felt a little wide, and the checkering tended to be irritating -- I'm old and fragile I guess.
Took some time sighting in the Burris red dot sights now on this pistol: and they are terrific. They perfectly solve the problem of some people like me who with uncorrected eyesight cannot focus clearly at all on either the rear sight, the front sight OR the target.
I'll try here to upload some photos from one location: pardon me if this does not work, I'll try another.

About 1-1/4in group from 25 yards, sandbag rest. I think the pattern is a little low because of my 'pulling' rather than properly 'pressing' the trigger, which I have to get used to. My bad.
Terrific handgun, again, can't say enough about Bob Cogan/APW.

whkrog:

I have previously expressed my great admiration for that STI/Cogan .45. Permit me now to do the same for the excellent shooting and the CITES-compliant ivory grips. That is now what I would call a "generational" pistol -- one truly worthy of being passed along through the family line. Congratulations!
