Title: New Server -- New Speed!
Post by: DDGator on September 02, 2010, 04:39:00 PM
Wow.  Tech guy today completed our seamless (I think) migration to a new server.

My first impression is that the speed of navigating the forum is vastly improved.

Let me know if you have any problems.

I didn't really do much testing... just really crossing my fingers. So please let me know if anything is funky.

Works great so far.

Seamless, and almost as fast as Tracker catapaulting from the deck in his A-4 Skyhawk.  8)  Great work!

Way to go TechGuy!  Seems fast too.  Did forum funds cover this new server or do we need to come up with a fun(d) raiser?

Duane,
It is faster for sure, my messages loaded much faster than before. (my personal test) ;D

Thanks
John

The exact cost is yet to be determined...  ;)  I will let you know if its an issue.

The increased speed is great.  Apparently we have been relocated to a private server where we are not competing with so many others for server resources.

Duane I tried John's (yankee 2500) message test, and it's quite a bit faster than before. Thanks Duane and TechGuy, good job!     Gene

I must be the only one having trouble.  Haven't been able to sign in since Thursday after the Forum went down.  I switched to mobile and got in a little while ago.

The private server must not be working with my ATT wireless or FireFox.  Tried both of those just now, again; a firewall may be blocking.  Still says cannot communite with website.

Duane, you asked if we had found any problems (hell I'M a problem around computers). My computer won't let me delete PMs. I follow the prompts, do it the same as I always have and I just get a white page saying it can't be done and that my mother should have drowned me at birth. Computers pick on people like me. If others have had this same problem, it would be a relief and you and TechGuy could fix it. If it's an id10t problem, I'll just find a twelve year old and he can fix it with a couple keystrokes. Thanks        Gene

I'm still having problems.  I can't sign in to the Forum at all without going to Broadband, which is mobile.  I thought it was my firewall brocking the private server, so turned it to off; tried again; no luck.  So now I'm stuck with using mobile which is sooo slow.

This is the only site I have to do this.  Everything else I do on the computer works.

I can't delete PM's eithor.

kjtrains - can you copy and paste the exact wording of your error message. You may want to try going to rohrbaughforum.com without the www in front of it and see if that works. My first guess is that it is a DNS cache problem on your end.

I will look at the PM deletion problem tomorrow.

B/R,
Steve

Nope.  Still can't get in.  Says, Internet Explorer can't display Web page.

Can delete PM's now while on mobile.

kjtrains -

Are you using a bookmark to access the site?

Try typing the URL directly into your address bar both with and without the www.

Also if you could make note of the time that you try to access the site I can check the logs to see what may be occurring on the server side of the connection.

TechGuy.  I've tried accessing the site by using www. and not using www. at 8:00 Am and 8:03 AM to no avail.  I've typed the URL directly to the address bar as you suggested.  That brings up a list of Rohrbaugh items on Google.

Selecting Rohrbaugh Forum Index then gives me the message that, Internet Explorer can't display web page.

I can click on the cache after the Rohrbaugh Forum Index on the list of Rohrbaugh items that Google pulls up and it gives me the Rohrbaugh Forum as it was on Aug. 31st, but when I try to login there, I still get the "can't display web page".

KJ:

I would first go to the "Tools" tab, open "Internet Options," and delete all the temporary files, browsing history, etc. If that doesn't work, I would scan your computer for registry and file path errors and such by purchasing and downloading one of the better known repair programs. They generally run between $30 and $50 a year. (I've been using "PC Doc Pro" for several years and found it to be worth the cost.)

Good luck.
Title: Re: New Server -- New Speed!
Post by: kjtrains on September 07, 2010, 01:03:56 PM
Richard, thanks!  The computer is always set to delete browsing history upon exit.  Every other site that I work on, banks, Edward Jones, stock exchange, all work with not a hitch.  I do the Microsoft repair and it says, can't ping host on the Rohrbaugh site.

I know this is probably a simple fix, I just haven't figured it out yet.

Thanks also for the "PC Doc Pro" suggestion.  The Microsoft program is about to expire, so I'll give the PC Doc a try.

Thanks again!

UPDATE:  Purchased the PC Doc Pro and it is currently fixing found errors, so hopely this will be one of the ones "Doc" fixes.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE:  "Doc" didn't fix the problem, however, the mobile is lightning fast now, so something got fixed.  Thanks, Richard.

When you type the address in the address bar your browser is not treating it like a URL, but like a search term.

Type this exactly into your browser's address bar:

http://www.rohrbaughforum.com

When you type a web site URL into the browser's address bar it should take you directly to the web site, not to a Google results page.

I also set up an error redirect page that may catch your error and send you to the home page. May or may not work.

Sorry, TechGuy, still doesn't work.  When I type it in that way, I immediately get the "can't display web page".

I don't know what the problem might be.

Have you tried using a different browser? Chrome maybe? That is my browser of choice.

I have tried Firefox and  I get the same thing.

kj - just out of curiosity try going to ChenaRiverAviation.com

That site shares the same server and IP address. Lets see if you can reach that site.

Just tried mobile and can get in.

TechGuy:

On the basis of your comment, I installed Google Chrome as one of my web browsers. It's great! Thank you for the recommendation. I'm using it today on an appellate brief I'm writing that involves a lot of medical terminology for which I need to be certain of the significance. Chrome is amazing in the speed with which it can bring up the needed references.

Thanks again.

I've got Chrome installed now also, but still didn't help whatever problem I have.  I've now called AT&T and they worked about an hour on the problem and couldn't figure it out except to say it has something to do with a firewall blocking which I've already tried turning it off to no avail.

So I'll just keep plugging away and maybe something will happen to cure the problem.

I just downloaded Chrome and BOY IS IT FAST!!!  I think I'm in love.  ;D

My problem, I feel for sure, is as TechGuy suggested, is AT&T U-Verse is not communicating with the DNS server and I suggested this to AT&T.  They acknowledged they did have problems communicating with some servers.

As far as the Chrome Browser working.  I agree it is fast on the AT&T U-Verse, just won't pull up the Rohrbaugh Forum.

I'll just switch to mobile until I find out the answer.  It's now fast too.

Ken you probably don't want to here this but i'm using AT&T with no problems.

Yep! But are you using U-verse?
Title: Re: New Server -- New Speed!
Post by: ccoorreeyy on September 10, 2010, 06:35:05 PM
Prob not being that I have no idea what U-verse is.
Title: Re: New Server -- New Speed!
Post by: kjtrains on September 10, 2010, 06:43:47 PM
U-Verse is AT&T's latest and supposed to be the fastest wireless and you can get the TV service to replace DirecTV.  I just have the phone service and AT&T High Speed Internet Service and it has been doing fine until the server switch.  Somehow this does not do the commincating with the DNS server.

U-Verse is a total seperate entity with AT&T.  It uses optic technology; fiber glass is used to transfer data using waves of light.

TechGuy.  I am fairly sure that AT&T has fixed the situation as a nice young lady took about three minutes to resolve the problem.  She suggested pulling up the web page www.pagewash.com and typing in rohrbaughforum.com and boom, the Forum was there.

Thanks for all your help as well.

I have Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Opera installed but use Safari most of the time. I'm much happier since I got the MacBook and no longer have to deal with Windows.

This works really fast now and as it should.  I was suffering with the mobile.  It was fast some of the time, then slow; depending on how many users were on the Verizon.

Now I'm a happy camper.
