Title: New Forum Software
Post by: TechGuy on November 20, 2011, 02:08:15 AM
Hello,

The forum software upgrade is complete. Over the next few weeks we will be making small changes as we find ways to optimize your experience and fix any reported issues.

I don't think that read/unread statuses carried over, you can mark whole sections as read though - so this should be relatively painless. I don't think that notification settings carried over either, so you may need to find any important threads that you want notifications for and enable them individually.

I haven't done a whole lot of testing so please report any issues in this thread.

We will continue to fine tune the spam issue over the next couple of weeks. There are probably some spam threads that were not deleted before the conversion. If you find any please click on the report to moderator link (bottom right).

Best Regards,
Steve

Great job, Steve!  Waking up to the new forum.  I will be cleaning up some of the junk and tweaking over the next couple days.  Definitely an upgrade!

Duane and "Tech Guy":

That is a remarkable piece of work, brilliantly conceived and brilliantly executed. Thank you and  congratulations to you both.

Hi Duane and Richard etc .........

Looks good and kudos to Steve, knowing as I do how software upgrades can be a major hassle.  Got my email about this so, nice to stay in touch, although as many older members know I am pretty much out of forums these days.

Best regards to all, Chris

What do you guys think of the lighter background and higher visibility text in the color scheme put in place around 3pm Eastern today?

Thanks, Duane. I also like the order of topics that you changed back to the original sequence.

I like the color scheme. It is easy on old eyes. I have gone to lasers on primary carry weapons.

And...the new software has already blocked 90 spam registrants as of this morning -- I can block them before they ever get to post.  Woo hoo!

Will the "last 10 posts" feature be available? That was a very useful tool for me.

Yes, but its even better than that.  Look in the upper left near your sign-in name.  You can visit ALL unread since you last visit, or only new replies to your posts.  It looks like this:

Hello DDGator
Show unread posts since last visit.
Show new replies to your posts.

When using the "unread posts since last visit" and I leave the sight without reading all the posts the next time  I check in they are not available.

Yes, it is truly what it says -- unread posts since last visit.  If you leave the site, that resets.  However, you can go down to the bottom of the forum and see "recent posts," which appears to be the last 10 posts.

Looks Good, just have 1 question I notice some of the Classifications say God Member. Was it supposed to say God or Gold ?  I am one of the old timers in the Computer world (34 Years) and feel your pain at the work it takes to do a changeout without too many users feeling it or even realizing you did it. (That is always my goal).  Good Job Bravo Zulu

Fixed for now -- to something less offensive.

Willing to consider other "custom" categories, like:

Marksman
Sharpshooter
Expert
Master
Grand Master

Any other suggestions for something that connotes various levels, but makes some sense in the shooting context?

Duane and Tech Guy, I like the new color scheme much better. Thanks to both of you for all the work you did. Now that I'm through kissin'  ass how do I get my picture back? Seriously, great  job!!          Gene

Another question, used to be, when you were logged in, the times were given in your local time, now they are always in eastern.      Am I doing something I shouldn't?, or not doing something I should. Stupidity should never be overlooked when examining my actions.          Gene

I think you have to go to your profile and reselect a picture.

The forum is set on EST.  Check your profile settings under "Look and Feel" --- there are a lot of settings you can change.

This is a minor complaint, so just ignore it if you want, but I would like to see the times to stay logged on changed. One hour is not enough, a day is too much. A month or a year are just silly. I like having it log me out since I always forget to do it myself. If you are logged on for more than two or three hours then no one knows if you are there or not. And by the way, I LOVE the new software!!!  Gene

Don't change it on my behalf but my eyes liked the darker back ground we had  before than this white.  The black we had was easier for me to read but like I said, don't change it for me.  Maybe i'll get used to it.

CWC -- thanks for the input.  The comments I have received publicly and privately overwhelmingly support the new color scheme as more readable...  However, I think if you dig into the options at the top you can actually change the colors you see on your end.

I found this under HELP but I think its somthing you have to set up on your end first to allow us to do our own theme.  Or at least thats the way I read it.  It's no biggie but don't but if you do let me know and i'll check it out.  Thanks

Theming and Templating
Ability to allow or disallow your users to select their own theme.
Ability to reset all of your members to a certain theme.
Ability to install a new theme via your administration center.

Site looks good to me so far, does seem more responsive than before.
Great news about the spammers!!

I do have one question though about after a thread reply?
It does not take me back to the thread? It takes me back to the "sub category" that the thread was in.

Just wondering if it was something I am doing or a new set up?

Thanks again for everything!!

I see what you mean.  I hadn't noticed the difference before.  Do you want to go back to the same thread to see your own post -- is that the idea?

I can see if that is an option or not.
