Title: Mag extension Intrest
Post by: yankee2500 on September 22, 2009, 11:18:35 PM
Well I have some good news. I made it to the machine shop today and they can make the mag extensions. I don't have one of the hooked models to show them so that one will have to be done from a picture and may take a little longer to work up.
I would like to hear from anyone intrested in them and what there preferance is, the flat model or the hooked model, that way I can let them know how many of each for a starting point.
As far as the price it is not all worked out because of the lack of one of the hooked models to work from, but the flat model will be no more than the IDM units were.
I will keep everyone posted on the progress.

Anyone with any intrest in these let me know which style you would prefer so I know what quantity to have them make of each.
So far it seems the only intrest is for the hooked style.
This is only to gauge intrest in the two models, and no one is commited to anything.
Thanks

By the response it seems there is no intrest in the flat model, so I don't know if there is much point in having any made.
I have another meeting with the mfg. on Monday to iron out some more of the details. I will keep everyone posted when I have more info.

have ypu considered making a + extension like glock, kel-tec, mec-gar, etc? I would be interested in an extension that added a round or two to the magazine and im sure others would be interested as well....seems silly to waste space. :D

That is a great thought but the mag release is on the bottom as opposed to the other guns you mentioned. There is not enough real estate for a mag capacity extension, unless I am missing something.

Look at an extended single column magazine for a Walther P-38, Helwan Brigadier, Beretta 951, or the double column magazine on an HK VP70/Z. They all have the same heel mount. The trick is to create a "bump" or protrusion on the tube exterior so the latch will catch or indentation.

It may be something to look into after this is worked out, but my feeling is the amount design work and machining is going to drive the cost up, and would require a new mag spring.

What finish will be used for the black on the extensions?

Seems like most cheaper finishes end up looking purple and that against a black frame looks poor in my opinion.

Post by: yankee2500 on September 28, 2009, 06:42:58 PM
I am looking into Duracoat in HK black or an anodized black finish. But need to get through the making of the extensions first ;D.  It is going to take a little more work because I did not have a hooked one to show the mfg., only a flat one so they have to do more to work up the dimensions. The other factor will be cost.

Is "Black Chrome" a consideration?

I guess anything is possible, but until I get a firm price on the machining work, which wont be until the design work is done. I think I will hold off on too many options on the finish.
And it will be more cost efficient to have the finish done close to home to save on shipping cost and also turnaround time.
I'm sure just as I did with my pup you could send the extensions out and have what ever finish you want put on.

Yankee2500,

Are these still a "live issue"?  If they are, do you have any estimate as to price and potential date available?

There seemed to be a pretty good response in terms of "pre-orders".

It is very much alive, the shop has been quite busy.
I spoke with them today, they said they would have one  made up for me to look at next week.
I will have a better idea of a potential date they will be available after I see the first unit and speak with them about the production schedule.
It looks like the price will be no more than the IDM units.
Upon inspection of the first unit I will post pics and will probably be looking for pre order deposits, based on the response I am looking at 60 + units that represents a sizeable cash outlay.

As a follow-up to this, I was talking with Maria at the factory today (ordering grips, black screws and springs).  I asked her about the possibility of Rohrbaugh selling mag extensions.  She said they had considered that but were strongly against the concept for the following reason: The risk of an extension slowing a pocket draw.

Maria said they considered the idea of people having extended mags for use at the practice range and regular mags for carry but they were concerned that people might become "dependent" on the extensions and thereby be in possible trouble for the carry situation.

I told Maria that I still would really like to have the extensions and asked if she was taking feedback from users on the matter.  She said she always took feedback but there was no active poll on this issue.

Maria asked that I NOT invite people on this forum to call her; her phone is too busy now.  However, they are apparently getting a new email system installed (2-3 months) and after that, email polls will be possible.

I think, based on this thread, that a large number of people are voting "yes".

Can the sponsor of this thread (sorry, I can't look back for your name now) give us an approximate count of the number of users who have placed "interest" orders and the total number of extensions currently "ordered"?

Thanks again for making this option available.  I will definitely shoot my Pup more with a mag extension than I do now and thereby will be better prepared for those events for which I train.

Even if Rohrbaugh disagrees with me on this mag-extension issue, they are sill the finest and most responsive gun company in the world!

Kind regards,
James

It matters not to me whether Rohrbaugh offers a mag extension or not but if it is true that they discarded the idea because of slowing the pocket draw, that reasoning just doesn't hold water.

Post by: yankee2500 on October 27, 2009, 11:57:36 PM
James, I'm too lazy to go back and count the numberr of users but the number of extensions is 60+ for hooked and 4 for straight, the average is probably 2 per person. So ball park 32-34 people

110% I have a lot of time (and gas money) ;D into this, going back and forth to the shop, about a 60 mile round trip. The shop is producing the sample for my approval, upon inspection they will be ready to go or make some changes. They are doing it off some drawings we worked up because I could not come up with a hooked one to let them see, only a straight one.

I'd hope that the price would be better than IDM charged.  A guy on the Seecamp forum just produce extended Seecamp mag extensions for 38.00 and IDM was charging $48.  With a volume purchase there should be a good discount.

Seems IDM was charging $10 more than this guy can make them for, so $10 less than IDM's $58 R9 extension comes out to be $48.  That sounds good to me.

Thoughts?

IDM was making the the extensions and selling them why they charged what they did I cant say. But I had to pay someone to do the design work and have to pay to have them made, then ship them to be anodized and pay for that and the anodize.
I'm doing the best I can, I called 15 to 20 places to get the best price on the anodize.

I just checked the the site for the Seecamp extensions and the $38 was a Pre Order Price, they are now $44

This is from the site for the Seecamp extensions.

This is a Pre-Order and they will be ready in 1week or less. **Pre-order over soon. I am shipping a few at this time.
The price will go up after the pre-order is over.
Other Items in SEECAMP *ORDER
 Seecamp Mag Extension  $44.00**

To update the R9 extension saga, I went to the shop today and they are writing the program for the CNC machine to make the extensions and hope to have one by the end of this week or first of next week.
I will update this when there is news.

John--I'm sure whatever you'll be charging will be a fair price to cover your costs and your time and efforts to do this for all of us. These is no doubt that you won't be selling enough of them to retire on--even if you sell a hundred and make a few bucks on each, that's not a lot of money to compensate you for all your efforts to do everything you've had to do to get these made. And no one else has been willing or able to make these since IDM stopped their production.
To get a product that matches the quality of our Rohrbaughs is worth whatever it takes--$5 bucks either way won't deter most folks from ordering them from you when we've spent $1200 on our pistols.
Let us know when you're ready to accept deposits or payments.
Thanks!!!!!

John,

I'm sure you are planning to really test the mag extension to ensure all works perfectly?

Perhaps using it to run a mag or two through your pup and ensuring that you can't pull the extension off the mag.

This would be desirable information for perspective buyers.

I'm currently using some Pearce extensions that I've modified.  I'm very interested in getting some of yours as I know that will look way sweeter than the pearce ones.

I just like the looks of the straight extension.  The normal grip is just fine for my small hands and I don't need any additional gripping surface.
Title: Re: Mag extension Intrest
Post by: Chinook on December 07, 2009, 12:50:58 AM
It's not a matter of grip; it's a matter of leverage.  A hook allows you to maintain the grip with downward leverage to offset the gun's need to rise on recoil.  I can shoot my pup with some accuracy but speed (between shots) is not there and if speed is there then accuracy is not.  I'm really hopeful that a hooked mag extension will greatly increase my effectiveness with the pup.

Blessings

Is it time for an update on this?  I've been crossing my fingers since 12/16 and they're getting tired!  I need to be able to uncross them soon so I can go to the range...

Joyous New Year to all

I was holding off, there was not much to update with the Holidays causing short work weeks. I did speak with the shop last week and they hope to get a couple made this week, but I have posted that in the past.
As soon as I have some REAL GOOD NEWS, I will post it.
I had hoped to have the units available long before this, but,
I think now I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  :)
or is my flashlight facing the wrong way?

John

This thread is approaching the length of "War and Peace"..

I can't remember if I actually ordered yet or not, but to be safe, put me down for 2 curved.

If you're actually keeping track of orders, you might put a list into a reply that gives names and numbers (so we will know what we've asked for)...  That should push this thread onto pages 8, 9 and 10!

Go Texas!

I get a headache when I look at this thread.  ;D
I have counted several times, and thought about printing it out, but have not done so yet. It will probably run my printer out of ink.  :(
I'm waiting for word from the shop, then after I check the
three Fs, (finish, fit and function) it's off to deal with the place doing the anodize. (hopefully a quicker process)
I will update as soon as there is news.

John

Well I have some good news. I made it to the machine shop today and they can make the mag extensions. I don't have one of the hooked models to show them so that one will have to be done from a picture and may take a little longer to work up.
I would like to hear from anyone intrested in them and what there preferance is, the flat model or the hooked model, that way I can let them know how many of each for a starting point.
As far as the price it is not all worked out because of the lack of one of the hooked models to work from, but the flat model will be no more than the IDM units were.
I will keep everyone posted on the progress.
