Title: VZ GRIPS
Post by: skorpyd on January 04, 2011, 10:32:55 AM
Has anyone used the vz grips yet, or is it a new product.  The slightly rounded profile looks interesting.

OK just found earlier thread, I see their new.

I just put mine on today and I really like them.  They are thinner than the stock grips, and their contour feels very good in the hand.

I ordered the smooth ones but the G10 material still has a somewhat grippy texture that feels just perfect to me.

No range trip yet, but here is a crappy cell phone photo for you :-)

Thanks Tim,   I went ahead and ordered them also,  I went with the checkered and like them too.  If I can figure how to post pics I will.

I kind of like the Black/Gray grips, non checkered.
http://vzgrips.com/gun-grips/rohrbaugh-r9/smooth/r9-black-gray-1

I currently have a two tone R-9, but in the future I want to have the Robar treatment done and it won't be two tone anymore.

Decisions, I just don't know which color to get, I don't know how they will look.

I have the Rohrbaugh Carbon Fiber on now.

You ought to do the Robar now, it's 25% off!

Any problems with the fit?

Looks great. Good luck.

I may order the checkered.

I met up with John from VZ Grips and actually ended up with a pair of the Black/Grey.
They fit well and feel well.
Let me know how you like the contrast.
Oh, John had mentioned to me if at any time I did not like the grips color, just send them back for a complete exchange.
Now, I can see some folks taking advantage of an offer like that, me, I'd just like to have a few in different colors.

I shot with my VZ's tonight for the first time.  I am absolutely thrilled.  I have the checkered types and they really made a world of difference in my control and my accuracy.  I drilled the target with any ammo I had.  It makes the package just perfect for me. I'm much more confident now.

As an aside, I couldn't find a load the R9 wouldn't feed, fire, and fling, including the dreaded Blazer Brass.  They sure are a lot lighter than the Silvertips I carry!

Excellent review and thanks.
It sounds like the checkered VZ's do help. I know I like the feel, but have yet shot the R-Nine with them on it.

I love VZ grips and have them on a CZ and my competition 1911's.  I've been considering a checkered set for my Stealth as well so I'm glad to see all the positive feedback.  I will also be ordering the VZ rubberized tape for the front and back straps when I order the grips.  I love the stuff and think it will really help with control.

I'm partial to the black desert sand, but for the R9 I'm going with the basic black.

Here's A pic I'm posting on a EDC thread on another forum, but wanted to show my Black Cherry grips on a two tone.   I like the look but I'm tempted to try out the grey/black, and the brown/black also.

Congratulations! The picture looks good, thanks for posting it for all to see, I love looking at pictures.

Isn't it a tough choice as to what color grips to order? I had a tough time, I even had Karl okay them before I actually bought them. It helped that the Rohrbaugh booth was in the same isle as the VZ grip booth at the shot show.

I just purchased and installed the black cherry checkered VG grips on my R9S.  They look great.  I noticed after cleaning the R9S that a slight discoloration can be seen in the area of the top grip screw on both sides of the gun (the top front portion of the grip).  I noticed this too with the original black grips as well......any suggestions as to what this is and/or how to prevent it.
Thanks,
Rich

Are the grips warped at all. If you lay them on a flat surphase can you see light under the middle or one of the ends?

Did you have to force them on the frame to fit flush or did they slide into place easily?

Rich,
What type of gun cleaner are you using ? Is it possible it is running onto this portion of the grip and causing the discoloration ?

John

Good observation John. I also note that the threaded holes for the grip screws do go all the way through the frame at this point which could allow solvents or oils to wick from the inside of the frame back through the screw holes.

In addition, the trigger pivot pin is very near the front grip screws, and it also goes completely through the frame and into the grips themselves so oil or cleaning solvents could travel through that as well.

Post by: TBI on February 07, 2011, 08:08:47 PM
Thanks for the replies. Grips are not warped.  I'm using Remington Oil and the Winchester Silicone Cloth. Some of the cleaning agent did and does get on the grips but I try and wipe it off....Might be impossible to protect the grips without taking them off for even a wipe down?  Is there a better cleaning/non-staining alternative?
Rich

Post by: chameleon on February 08, 2011, 06:39:40 AM
The G-10 Grips are impervious to the Rem oil or other lubricants, as a matter of fact the oil may enhance the color.

One of the first things Karl did after my new VZ Grips were installed on my R-9 was to wipe both pistol and grips with oil. It really brought out the grips.

I'd look elsewhere as to a problem with discoloration to the grip.Maybe it is a pool of oil stuck in the grip screw hole.

I just got my VZ grips today (cherry) and they are great!  I couldn't be more pleased with them.  The grip is much improved over the stock grips.  Night and day difference.  I expect these will make the gun quite a bit easier to hang onto while shooting.  And they look really great too.  They add even more class to the look of the pistol.  Very nice and highly recommended.

I finally ordered mine, but couldn't get the grip screws out to install them.  I think I may have done too good of a job with the Permatex when I swapped out the stainless screws for the black ones.  Even the soldering iron trick didn't work.  I'll have to try again after a couple more range trips.

Wow, guys. I am mighty impressed.

I just received my VZ Black Cherry grips for the Pup today in the mail.
The original flat-sided grips never really "gripped" me quite right because the pistol would feel just a little of what I can only call "slippery" in my hand, especially if drawing quickly.

But the slightly crowned side and the more pronounced checkering of the VZ grips make the R9S feel like a completely different, and better, pistol.

And the Black Cherry on the all-black R9s look absolutely stunning. I'd be sold on the feel alone, but the looks do this incredible little pistol much justice.
And when it comes to pistols, if nothing else, I want justice.  ;)

And speaking of justice, I should also say that the pictures here don't do the grips justice. You have to see and feel them in person to appreciate what they do for the Pup.

I scond your review, The VZ frips do give the gun a whole new feel. In fact i feel like i have more control when handeling the gun.

Pictures do not do the grips justice, you really need to see them in person.

They have done an awsome job on their design. Thanks VZ! :D

Well I just received my Carbon Fiber grips from VZ.

Thank you VZ!

These are awesome!

As Wolverine said, pictures do not do these justice.  I have a two tone gun and they are absolutely stunning and svelte.  And feel great too.

They may be better than OEM carbons.  I do not know, but I would like to compare side by side.

I took pics, but do not know how to post, I will be glad to e-mail them to someone if they would like to post them for the group.

Title: Re: VZ GRIPS

I thought so to.

I have never been happy with the stock grips, the smooth or the Hogue.

Once i tried my first set of VZ grips i was hooked.

I have two sets of the G10 checkered. They give me more controll and a better grip. The checkering makes a world of difference.

I have one set of VZ carbon fiber grips. I put these on my PUP with no 9MM stampings on the barrel. They look great and feel better than the OEM grips. I dont intend on carrying this PUP all the time, thats why i decided on the carbon fiber not the checkered G10.

on the VZ grips, is there enough?

That is why I have held off.

I have a set on my Carry 1911 and LOVE them!

They are not an expensive grip If you are not happy, and you can recoup most of your initial investiment.

Ok, I've tried the VZ Carbon grips side by side with OEM carbon fiber grips on the guns.

VZ wins hands down.

There is just a little bit of a palm swell there that really adds to the comfort without bulk.

And they look awesome too.

I do like the Blue - Blue grips, not the sorta blue ones.  And if I did happen to come across a pair at reasonable noncollector prices, I would buy them.
I'm just not willin to to pay current market prices for looks, I'm more into function - not that they do not function, but when you pay that much, you don't necessarily want to carry them every day and scratch them up.

I carry mine in a Meco back pocket holster, but in the front pocket.  I have carried it one time in the Meco Sharkskin, however, only to lunch and back; not really worried about scratching the Blues as I am about holster wear on the finish.

I'm going to try that Renaissance Wax/Polish that Richard suggested.

Thank you for the vote of confidence in my recommendation, gentlemen. I'm confident that you will be as pleased with the protection Renaissance Wax provides for the finishes of your firearms as I have been. Let me just put it this way -- it's so good that when my wife, having seen me using it on my guns, decided to try it on some of her antiques, she pronounced it "amazing." She then flashed those baby blues of hers at me and said, "Honey, can I have this?"

"Of course, Darling," I replied . . . heading to the computer to order another can of the stuff.

I'm going to try that Renaissance Wax/Polish that Richard suggested.

That sounds like a good idea.

Does the wax help add to the gip?

Making it more tacky as well ?

Don't think so.  I've not tried it yet; it's on the way.  I think it's just a protective coating on whatever you apply it to.  I'll know in a couple of days.

I use the Renaissance Wax on the entire gun, including the grips -- even the textured VZ grips, just making sure that I use a very light touch so as not to leave deposits of wax in any crevices. The wax doesn't make the grips any "grippier." It just provides protection for the entire exterior of the firearm from damaging effects of fingerprints, sweat, water, holster abrasion, etc., etc. Here is a link to more information on it:

I recently ordered a new gun and was disappointed; posted elsewhere on the forum. I decided to jump on the VZ bandwagon to celebrate my refound R9 joy. I just received them and put them on my Robar R9. (You already know what my gun looks like with the Yankee 2500 photo, less the mag extension).

I have been critical of G10. However, unlike the drab, flat, charmless factory G10 grips, the VZ grips are smokin hot. Consider that my VZ grips are replacing factory carbon fiber grips.

Thank you to the many who posted positive things about VZ.

The VZ grips do make a world of difference.

I like the black checkered and the carbon fiber myself. :D
Title: Re: VZ GRIPS
Post by: coyote on April 16, 2011, 11:18:53 AM

i've been thinking about getting a set (when i eventually have a R9s in hand) and was a little concerned about the tappering thinness at the back of the grip causing less surface area for the web of the hand to absorb recoil (compared to the wider factory grips which would appear to increase the contact area's size).

any thought on if the different grip thicknesses, where it contacts the web of the hand, change the "felt" or perceived recoil sensation?
(of course, i'm fully aware that actual recoil doesn't change when changing grips of the same weight)

(was that confusing enough?)
Title: Re: VZ GRIPS
Post by: MRC on April 16, 2011, 11:32:59 AM
In my opinion, the factory grips are far too "slick" and flat allowing the pistol to "slide" in my hand.  NO Grip!  Recoil seemed considerable.

With the VZ grips and mag extensions, I felt I had complete control of the pistol during a fast 7 rounds.  Recoil was very acceptable even with my old, stiff hands and wrists.  A big improvement in control and felt recoil.

My opinion.
Title: Re: VZ GRIPS
Post by: Z on April 16, 2011, 02:23:08 PM
I agree with MRC.

The VZ grip a are thinner near the back strap and front strap. I have the G10 checkered. I also use one of Yankee2500 mag extensions. The combination give you more control and a better grip. :)
Title: Re: VZ GRIPS
Post by: coyote on April 16, 2011, 02:53:43 PM
i love the look and feel of VZ's thinness at front and back. to me, that radius is so much nicer feeling in the hand (and far better looking) than the slab sided factories or hogue extremes. its the main reason for wanting to order them (besides the beauty).

i was worried that the thinness at the rear would increase felt recoil, yet you're both saying that in spite of the thinness they do indeed increase control and feel better in recoil. is that correct?

also, do you think that little bit of checkering on each panel actually helps? or are the smooth just as viable?

Title: Re: VZ GRIPS
Post by: MRC on April 16, 2011, 04:07:57 PM
Yes, I do feel they increase control and feel better in recoil.  I did not think that the recoil of the R9 with stock grips was punishing, it was just too slick and I started to lose my grip before I could empty a magazine.  As you lose your grip, you notice the recoil more.

I have only shot the R9 with the checkered grips, but I think with a mag extension, the smooth wouls be just fine.  I am just guessing.  I do like the looks of the smooth grips better.  VZ told me they would trade my grips back if I changed my mind on color or checkering.  Can't beat that.

The checkering on the VZ grips add enough grip to make a difference.
It hit the palm of your hand on one side and two fingers on the other side.

You can always try a set, if you like the keep them and if you don't, sell them. They should go quick in the clsssifiesd ads here.

Hi all,

I got a pair of VZ grips today (checkered black/cherry) and I love the way they feel on the weapon. I have run into a snag and was hoping someone has a picture of the inside of the right grip (the one with the cutout) , after installing mine I noticed a rattle where there had been none before. The weapon seems to function fine however the trigger is noticeably loose and wobbly. I took off the grip and reinstalled the factory one, no rattle and the trigger tightened right up. I looked at the cutout on the VZ and noticed that it was different in dimension than the factory grip. It seems that the VZ is pressing on the transfer bar spring and when I take the VZ off, the spring pops out of the hole in the transfer bar. I'm including a picture of the insides of the factory and VZ grips. I noticed a difference in the thickness at the backstrap area, the front of the grip and the lower cutout is wider on the factory grip. I don't know if this matters or not???? It could be user error on my part. I can't imagine I'm the only one with this issue and I'm not knocking VZ in any way. I really want these to work on my pistol but I can't take the rattle and loose trigger. Maybe I'm not installing them correctly, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

I noticed recently when I removed my grips for the first time that the sear trigger bar spring was creeping up the post and resting against the inside right grip. Consequently, as I looked at it after removing the grip, it decided to pop out as if to say, "gotcha." I opened up the spring slightly with a small flat headed screwdriver and seated the spring better than it had been in the first place. You might try that or just send the grips back to VZ if that doesn't work for you. It may be that your VZ grips are slightly deeper in the cutout and allow the spring to move too much in the firing process.

Mike,
The pin that the trigger pivots on is held on each end by the grips, possibly the locating pin holes are too large (or larger than on the factory grips)

Tracker,
I have always thought there should be a small groove machined around that post to keep the spring from sliding off, I had the same problem you described and fixed it the same way.

I think you are correct about the trigger pin, without taking it apart again, I think the pin hole may be a tad too deep. I'll contact VZ tomorrow.

The black cherry grips I got are smooth; uncheckered. I chose them because checkered grips, in my experience, are abrasive in a gun as small as the R9.

I fired my R9 for the first time (with my VZ grips) and I did notice a difference from the factory carbon fiber grips.

I can't quantify the difference as I carry much and shoot little. Perhaps if I went to the range and tried the respective grips sequentially I might find the words to describe the difference.

No problems with the VZ grips (yet) as mentioned on this string but I will pay attention if a problem arises.

However, my R9 went "bang" without fail and the VZ grips felt good.

Why Venezuela? I thought the Bersa was made in Argentina?

In any case, we have discussed "bad guns" elsewhere on this forum and I would place Bersa in that category.

The only circumstance in which I would want a Bersa would be if the alternative were no gun at all. No disrespect to those who cannot afford a more expensive/quality gun, which, after all, this forum celebrates.

The laughing face looks like Hugo Chavez's smile. Regarding the Bersa which is a Walther clone I was sitting next to a gentleman at the range last year and he was shooting his wife's Bersa. The gun functioned flawlessly and his accuracy was superb at 15 yds. That was the first one I had seen but it was quite impressive in his hands.

Here is one opinion:

I have to admit that I have always looked down my nose at the Bersa and would never consider one.
However a handful of aquaintences have told me how great they are.  And I would just nod, thinking to myself, pos.

Maybe they are worth a look, kind of like the Makarovs.  They make great car guns.  Leave them in your car and if they get stolen: it was a decent pistol, but no great loss, except for possible legal problems. :o

The Genitron article which tracker inserted is noteworthy. But, I will keep my 1966 pre-Interarms .380 Walther PPK.

True confessions moment:

Although I do not like the Bersa, and most crude guns, I am "guilty" of ownership of a Soviet TT33. The gun is crude but sturdy. Further, the surplus ammo is cheap and fun to shoot.

I love bottleneck cartridges and the 7.62 round is LOUD and super fast. Strictly a plinking gun.

Would I ever carry the TT33? Not on my life.

I'm having a very similar problem, except that there is enough play for the wrench shaped plate (transfer bar?) to slip off and the hammer fails to rise.  I tried re-installing them and made very sure that the screws were tightened correctly, but still have the hammer fail to engage every few trigger pulls.  I put the factory grips back on, and the problem disappeared.  The picture jmoh posted is exactly how mine look.
I'm not sure if these are somehow different - it's a R9 Stealth SN 21## - but I'm a long time customer of VZ - I'm sure they'll take care of it.
But does anyone know, are there subtle frame differences between models?

I would venture to guess there are no frame differences between models.
Have you checked the depth of the machined recess on both sets of grips ? It sounds like the VZs may be a bit deeper and this is causing the issue.

I just checked my factory grip an Aluma-Grip and the VZ grip and the recess on the VZ grip is fifty thousandths while the factory G-10 grip and the Aluma-Grip are sixty thousandths deep.
So the recess on VZ grip I have is not as deep as the factory grip.

Couldn't get mine to work, no matter what I tried. Called VZ twice, spoke to someone twice and was told I'd get a call back twice. I give up, they're going back to VZ.

I recently obtained a pair of (black cherry) VZ grips for my Robar R9. The only problem I had was getting them shipped. When I called the guy told me he had them in his hand (Monday) and they did not ship until the following Wednesday.

I have no interest in VZ apart from being a satisfied customer. It would seem that you got a bad pair of grips and you are justified in returning them.

Anyone have their screws strip out of their new VZ grips?
Do you mean the threads or the hex indentation in the screw's head stripped out?  If the head, I found that the hex tool that came with the VZ grips wobbled slightly when inserted into the head - which could easily strip the head when force is applied.   I had a Sears Craftsman 1/16" hex tool in my tool box and found that this fit tight in the head.   Using the Sears tool I removed the factory screws and installed the VZ screws with no problem.

Could it be that VZ is sending the wrong size tool with the grips?

I would be inclined to believe the allen wrench supplied with the grips and screws is of low quality and is the correct size but not made from high quality material or to exacting standards.

I would use a good quality allen tool to take those screws out, the one that I got from VZ spun on the second attempt.

Joe,  Welcome to the group from a former Western New Yorker.
Thanks for the welcome. I had posted a photo of a funny poster that involved a cup of coffee, but then deleted it as it had a bit of rough language, and i didnt want my first post to be about that. Anyway, for my new guy intro, i bought a stainless two-tone R9S two weeks ago, but then decided i really liked the Stealth model better, so i ordered one and am still waiting for it to get to my NY FFL from Arizona. I probably am not going to ever shoot my stainless one, and just sell it as soon as my Stealth comes in. Or else I might just keep it in the box as factory fresh for a while, i don't know. I like small pistols, and have two Seecamps, in .32 and .380 and a Kahr P380 that shoots smooth as silk and is 100% reliable. I just wanted to upgrade my carry caliber for a bit more punch. I am a bit spoiled by the Seecamp though.  I retired two years ago from the NYPD after 24 years. I always just had 2 wheel guns,  a SW model 10 on my hip and during off hours a SW model 36 on my belt. I got tired of carrying that heavy steel after all those years, and wanted something a bit lighter. This forum has great info and seems to have great brothers willing to help out.

I had the same experience with the VZ allen screws and wrench.

Throw out the VZ allen wrench and buy a HUDY from A Main Hobby. Wow what a difference.

A Wiha hex wrench is also good.  Joe_from_NY posted a link from Amazon where they are on sale; 1/16 inch.

Adam.  You're very welcome.  Nothing like having a spare; and at that price.
