COP Derringer
« on: April 25, 2016, 07:15:41 PM »
It's been too quiet around here so I thought I would put this up so you guys can ridicule me.

I don't know why, but I have always wanted one of these since the first time I saw one at a Gun Show.  I out smarted them though and waited until they became a "Collector's Item" so I could pay double for it.

What do you guys think about a four barreled 357 derringer?

I think that you should only fire one barrel at a time.

Looking forward to a range report MRC

No ridicule here. They are quite the unique sidearm.

I do want to know how it shoots if you get it out to the range.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.

The COP is fairly small for what it is, but it is built like a tank.

The spec sheet said 25 oz., this one on my scale is at 27 oz.  I do not think it would be bad at all to shoot.

I used to shoot a scandium Smith in 357 which weighed 12 oz.

MRC...You're a better man than I...I've tried a lightweight with .357...
first shot was perfect...2nd and 3rd had so much flinch that they would have been useless.

The 140 gr Silvertips were not all that bad.  You could buy the Silvertip bullets back then and I hand loaded them about half way between a 38 +P and 357 velocity and they shoot good.

I have a Mod 60 stainless with the best DA trigger job I have ever pulled.  I shot it a lot and decided to develop a 357 low flash load.  I used a 125 gr bullet and 8 grains of bullseye which was max.  It shot terrific with that load.  When I got the Scandium 357, I started shooting that load in it and it shot really well also.  After a range session, I went home to clean the Scandium pistol and the end of the titanium cylinder had actually flame cut from the gases blowing past the cylinder end and the forcing cone.

I sent it back to Smith and Wesson and they fixed it, no questions asked.  When I got it back, I called up Smith's hand loading Tech Guy and talked to him about the load.  First he admonished me for using that fast of burning powder in a 357 magnum load and I explained that it was a "book load" and how well it shot in the Model 60.  We talked later and he actually tried the load in his 60 and agreed it was a great shooting load.  Just don't shoot it in a titanium gun as you will melt it.

Now if you could find someone to turn 4 of these down to the same size as the .357 cartridge, you could spend the entire day on the range shooting it.
