Hi, Everyone:
I have been puzzled since joining the forum about the use of the term, "Pup" to refer to the Rohrbaugh pistol. I must confess, this is a new one one me, and I cannot figure our why that term would be used to refer to the pistol. I suppose it is true that those whom it suites might begin to look upon it affectionately, particularly if it might have saved them in a lethal situation. Beyond that, I am stumped. Can anyone enlighten a new member to the almost universal use of this term here?
Thanks. I am truly enjoying the forum.

Here is a start on the Pup moniker and it took off from there. A good answer to your question is that it is a term of endearment.

I have used the term Puppy or Pup, for some 40 years to describe a thing of beauty that I like very much and am proud of. Many people use it for that purpose.
Iam not sure how it started. Puppy Love perhaps.

tracker. I've read that thread before and never picked up on that was the first pup reference. Excellent. Thanks.

You know, I've been around here since 2004, and I don't recall that being the first "PUP" was mentioned. R9sCarry may have been the first to coin the phrase, but it was in a post that actually described why he called it a pup.Well that's my recollection any way.
Does it matter, the name stuck and every one knows it came from the forum and ever one on the forum knows an R9 is a Pup.

Tracker's link shows the first use of the term in June 2004. And here's a link to Chris himself "'fessin' up" in November 2005: :)

mallard,
There you go, everything you wanted to know about the R9s nickname (and somethings you didn't) ;D enjoy your PUP as we all do.
Good job of finding that info Tracker and Richard.

4M, when I first accessed the R forum one of first things that I noticed was the members referring to the guns as "pups". I figured that if a group of hard-nosed individuals that gun owners usually are, cared enough about the weapon to give it a pet name then it must something really special! Three pups later I know this to be true. Gene

There is another reference someplace about the Pup being mentioned, that had something to do with being the diminutive of the Charter arms guns also if I remember??
There was a fairly long "explanation" reasoning that went on?
Mind is going, and search skills are weak!!
But the PUP is a perfect nickname for our beloved pocket rockets!! ;D

Gentlemen:
Thanks to all who replied. I have read the threads provided, and understand now. In reality, I understood before, but you have confirmed my guess: it is called a "pup" because it is small, cuddly and easily loved. I am fully on board!
Kindest regards,
