Title: Public Side of R9
Post by: ACP on April 21, 2009, 02:59:27 PM
Why is the R9 so often photographed from the "public side"? I am borrowing a phrase from the knife world. A right handed gentleman would carry a knife or sword with the blade facing the rear. This would be the "public side". The private side would be the portion of the sword hanging against the carrier's hip.

With the R9, I like the "private side" photos better in which the barrel is facing left; the non-ejector profile view of the R9. Yet the factory, the (scarce) photos seen in magazines and collector's guides (and many of you on the forum) seem to prefer the "public side". What am I not getting here?

I think Corey's photo of the ivory gripped R9 is the best photo I have seen of the R9, period. Am I wrong? Am I a bad person? Who wants gum?

Never gave it much thought ACP but all my photos are public side.  I believe it is because a right handed person would lay there gun down that way.
To lay it down on the private side you would have to flip your hand over and let the gun slide out.
Way to much work.
Thanks for the pics Corey!

Thank you, gentlemen, for your response. I was beginning to think I was all alone.

The only gun that looks great to me (pubic and private sides) is the M39 Full House Devel.

Might it be because the serial number displays on the right side of the gun?

robfxlr,
I can't help but ask:

Do you have a purple feathered hat and leisure suit to go with those grips?  :D

I have a lime green 1979 Eldorado.

No one that has seen the wood grips thinks it is gaudy but then again guys with hilarious comebovers think they look better with that look.

The grips look great, pricey though, probably out of your league and would not look great on your Raven .25

My husband would LOVE your car!

We would hang something like this on the mirror!

And you're right, those grips are too rich for my taste!

Nice stopper, MrsFos, but I would not want to make the mistake of
assuming that you are on the grip side of a Raven .25.

Don't look now, but the reference to "your Raven .25" is a "got you last zinger".

The Raven .25 is from the dung heap of firearms.

Ha Ha!! Yes, that was a good one and paints a funny picture!

I have heard of them but I've never seen a Raven.

From what I have read on previous posts the reason MrsFos hasn't
seen one is that she is a serious shooter.

I've just been in good company!

I'm glad to see you fellas weren't offended by my sense of humor (especially robfxlr)!

Bling is a good thing!! I have pink ivory wood grips on my defender - they are prettier in person -- but they still look sort of plain compared to robfxlr's r9!

Funny stuff.............. Just kidding, no '79 eldorado, just an AMC Pacer............
It is funny, I have carried a gun for 29 years and only started getting interested in them over the last 6 months. I am not a shooter, more of a collector though-not enough time.
The R9 suits me well, carry alot shoot a little. I have aquired a few other goodies of late:

Taurus "The Judge" ultralight......S & W model 342 PD scandium 357, Ruger LCP,
north american arms PUG, SS 22 mag, 5 shot, 6 0unces! and the work gun- glock 27

I guess it's true what they say about beauty and the eye of the beholder.

I was disappointed to hear you really didn't have a green eldorado, though!

Concur: It is all fun and my previous post was done tongue in cheek.

I have had my share of stirring the pot. As long as our posts are done with humor and respect, it is all positive.

Do we always agree? No. However, as long as we share our love for the R9 pistol, and do so honestly, (warts and all), this forum will remain the gold standard, in my view.

I saw a BC comic one time that really puts it into perspective

First frame:  little fish, caption  reads "Can't we all just get along?"

Second frame: bigger fish --> on the tail of the little fish

Third frame: biggest fish --> on the tail of the bigger fish --> on the tail of the littlest fish

nature has a way of working that question out!

ACP:  I bought a Raven .25 in 1985 for $60 at a pawn shop in Waco TX. just for kicks.  I put a couple of boxes through it w/ no issues.  Wish I could say the same for my R9s.
Title: Re: Public Side of R9

Wheedum

I have had issues with the R9 as have many others which may be followed on this forum. Feeding problems, FTF, wishes for a frame mounted mag release; you will find it all within these forum pages.

However, despite these issues, our consensus is that the R9, despite its limitations, is the finest pocket pistol in the world as measured by quality.

The Raven? It is what it is.

Believe it or not, I actually have a Raven MP-25. It was a door prize at a gun club event. (Aren't I the lucky one?  ::) )

I shot it once just to see if it would work. It went "bang" and spit out an empty casing. (Accuracy? Whazzat?  ;)) I then cleaned it up and put it in the back -- waaaaay back -- in my gun safe. It's still there.

Although I never bothered to take a photograph of the Raven in my safe, it looks like the one in this stock photo (which I post just in case someone has never seen one of these things that gave real meaning to the term, "Saturday Night Special."

In the past when I was doing alot of LE department work. I would trade in all of the departments old guns as well as all the confiscated guns. At one point I had more Raven .25acps than any dealer in the state of Texas.  We are talking over 400 Ravens. I packed them up in boxes of 50 and sold them to other dealers in Tx and OKla. some of them were pretty fancy, pearl like grips and pink etc.  ;) 8) ??? Tom

Hi Point is an awesome tool in the right hands.  You tie the 50 lb test line through the trigger guard, and that catfish bait will drop like nobody's business.  Absolutely reliable as well.  Thing sinks every time.

Raven, Hi Point, Jennings, AND..... L O R C I N   You've not seen cheap till you've seen a Lorcin.  It's the Jane Fonda of the handgun world!

Then there is my all time favorite, the P-32; the venerable Davis
original pocket pistol, an awesome value. Does anyone know that
song that starts with, "The bitterness of poor quality is remembered
long after the sweetness of cheap price is forgotten?"

Priceless comment: The Jane Fonda of the handgun world.

I cannot use the language on this forum to describe the contempt I have for her so Wheedum's comment put a big smile on my face.

Some of my friends who were former guests of the Hanoi Hilton have
particularly poignant feelings about Hanoi Jane. I wonder which
Memorial Day event had her as the guest speaker.

Who knew? They have Memorial Day in Hanoi now? Perhaps their Memorial Day is to commemorate her aiding and abetting our former enemy.

I have to restrain myself with this miscreant (expletive) who, in my view, should have been tried for treason.

Ah, yes, I had forgotten about the Davis P-32 and its big brother, the Davis P-380. There's nothing quite like the pure excitement of shooting a pistol made with die-cast zinc alloy parts. And for a real adrenalin rush, load one of those suckers with +P ammo and let 'er rip! (Just be sure to have a tourniquet in your range bag in case the thing explodes in your hand. ;) )

Post by: tracker on May 28, 2009, 04:33:03 PM
As a matter of fact the P-380 did explode in a man's hand during
his first range session with it. He had an injured hand and a shell
casing fragment in his eye requiring surgery.
The product liability lawsuit was settled in 1995 with Mr. Davis
paying $40,000 to the plaintiff.

$40K? Could not have been a very good lawyer. Zinc alloy parts? My God. Happy to say the closest I have ever gotten to one is in a photograph.

No, not for now. I switched them out with these from Sarge's grips from the Finer Grain (http://thefinergrain.com/). Ryan made a matching set for the 1911 Commander model I don't own yet but plan on having sooner or later!
