Sig P238:  Too bad it isn't a 9mm
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:27:32 PM »
I really like Sig's new P238 with it's safety and slide lock.

Best:  Night Sights
Worst:  Only comes in .380

Not too bad at all.  Like you said, it isn't a 9mm.  I like the silver one tone as far as color goes.

I love these guns; wish they were 9mm.
They shoot great, no recoil at all and way accurate.
I have the Equinox with a laser and the Liberty.

I like the look of them but thats about it, they are Longer, wider and weigh more than a Kahr PM9 and are still a 380 with a $700+ MSRP.
Also for shooters who use DA only type guns (Glocks, Rohrbaughs, LCPs etc) the 1911 style safety would be a challenge to remember in a draw and shoot situation when one is used to just pulling the trigger. IMO

Feels good in the hand too, I looked at them when they first came out and I like the option to change grips, something you can't do on the Poly frames.

Its a very easy gun to shoot well weak handed.

Everything is unfamiliar with the weak hand.  Being a lefty, I like the single action for my weak right hand.

The PM9 is indeed better but not in a back pocket.

I have one of the early models, 1100's ser #  Been back to SIG twice, a nice pocket gun when on my Harley.
I have a pocket holster locked into the chest pocket of my leather vest. While the Sig was in for repair I carried the R9, just put Hogue extreme grips on her with the black screws, I am amazed at the grip on my pup now what with Yankees mag extension and the new grips, its pretty good.
I did not realize that the extreme (rough grip edge) was all around the perimeter of the grip as well as the checkering in the middle,
I like!

Early ones had some problems as do many pocket autos.  They seem to have the teething problems worked out now.

Here is a link about a guy who shot an attacking pack of dogs/coyotes with a P238.  Warning that the subsequent 8 pages of blather are people arguing over whether the .380 is good enough or not.

Unlike a lot of .380s, the Sig IS a range gun.
You will WANT to shoot it.
You will have fun shooting it and you will get deadly accurate with it.

Placement; I has it.

Just got my 238 back from SIG service 2 1/2 weeks, they changed the extractor, adjusted the slide stop spring? (never heard of that one) polished the barrel ramp and she seems to shoot fine with all 4 of my 3rd generation mags now.

I remembered that I had some old Kimber 9mm mag base extensions laying around.  I took apart two of my 238 mags, drilled, tapped, cleaned and assembled the base's to each mag and this is the result. I had purchased a kit a few years ago with the 3/32 drill bit and a 4-40 tap.

Josey,
Good idea with the extensions, looks like a good fit. I tried one of my R9 extensions on the Kahr PM9 and it fit perfect, you never know what parts you can interchange if you don't try.
I just can't grasp the idea of a 380auto for a range gun, the ammo is as much as 45acp and harder to come by.
