Title: Carry Ammo
Post by: Griff on May 02, 2014, 08:55:35 PM
Has anyone else been watching "Shooting the bull 410 9MM Ammo Quest?"
The Gold Dots haven't been the best performers in the 3" barrel testing.

i haven't seen it but IMO it is hard to top the Federal HST 124 gr. On the other hand Gold Dot has been consistently reliable in the R9 if there were no otherwise associated functional gun problems.

Yep,

And I think the top performer so far has been 147gr std pressure Federal HST followed by the 124gr std pressure HST.

115gr Hornady Critical Defense did OK, penetrated past the 12" minimum and expanded to the .55-ish diameters,

The way the Critical D's work is that the lead petals basically fold back.  This is different from a GoldDot which mushrooms out.

If you look at TNOUTDOORS9  test of Underwood's +P+ loading of the 147gr Gold Dot, his test shows that the Gold Dot will mushroom out to greater and greater diameters the faster the bullet is pushed,  TNOUTDOORS9's test of the 147gr Underwood / Gold Dot resulted in a bullet expanding to .814" (.791 on average).

The Critical Ds are not going to do that.  The petals are going to fold back on the core resulting in expansion between .53 and .59 inches diameter.  The faster they are pushed, the deeper they will penetrate.

I am waiting for ShootingTheBull410 to get to the Winchester Ranger "T" Series RA9T.
