Title: Preferred ammo
Post by: John on October 22, 2007, 06:04:10 PM
This is my first message on your forum.
What brand & weight ammo seems to work best in the R9's?
I am very interested in the Rohrbaugh's for CCW.
I am use to Detonics .45's, S&W 640's & S&W 39-2's.
Any input as to the type of recoil I can expect?
Haven't seen one in person, just on the website.
Thanks, keep up the good work.

I pretty much use Speer Gold Dot in all of my pistols in any cal.  But my question would also be is the GD the best for use in the R9s or is there another favorite round amongst you experienced R9 shooters?   :)

Silvertip 115 gr. is Karl's favorite; Gold Dot is superb, without
a doubt.

I got in a hundred rounds of Silvertips among some Hornadys and Gold Dots this afternoon.  Next trip out I will try and see about making a permanent selection for my carry ammo with the R9s.  Fed Ex does a good job delivering ammo as I just oreded this on Saturday and today is Tuesday.  Ofcourse cheaperthandirt.com has something to do with it as well.

After my second trip to the range with the R9s I find I like the Silvertips.  I have a total of 48 rounds thru this new pistol and don't think I need anymore range time to check reliability.  I am convinced this gun will fire evey time I pull the trigger.  Only hold up now is the holster that RJ Hedley is making for me.  I expect to see it any day now.   :)

In the meantime, get a Thunderware X-small holster(or Smart Carry). It will serve you well in any climate and with any style of clothing. IMHO, you will never be disappointed.

I've found that when I fed the pup shi_ ammo, I had similiar results on the firing line.

Learn from me and only feed it good ammo 8)

Amen, Eddie; the fact that the bitterness of poor quality
remains long after the sweetness of cheap price is forgotten
is acutely relevant with ammo. Like Richard said and has been
repeated many times in other ways, don't put cheap gas in
your Ferrari.

Just bought the R9 from a co worker for $700.  I thought it was a good price as only 200 rounds went through it. What do you Rohrbaugh guys think about that price.

Excellent price in my opinion.

>>I have tried a variety of good defensive ammo in both of my R-9s over the past few years and for reliability, shootability, and accuracy - my guns prefer .115g Silvertips.  My second choice in both guns would be .115g Gold Dots, although IMO and with my guns, it seems that Silvertips produce a smoother recoil than GD, which results in better follow up shots.  That said, both rounds get the job done.

For general practice rounds I have had excellent results using .115g brass cased Blazer ammo, which is what Rohrbaugh use in the shop for testing guns...or at least they did last I spoke to the R-Bros.  About once a month I take my R-9s to the range and put a one or two magazines of practice ammo through each gun, always ending with a mag of Silvertips.

Other folks seem to prefer the .124g bullets using Silvertips and Gold Dots.  I use .115g versions in most of my .9mm guns, and I guess I am just more familiar with those rounds.

Bottom line = you need to try a variety of QUALITY defensive ammo in your Pup to determine what works best for you.  And remember...the R-9 was built to be carried a lot...but shot a little.  The R-9 is not intended to be a "range gun" for target shooting.  That's why God created Glocks = to be shot a lot or to your heart's desire.  To protect your heart, carry the R-9.

Note to LAM = $700 is a swell price for an R-9.  I wish I had a co-worker who would give me such a deal.  Oh yeah...I have no co-workers as I am the owner and sole proprietor of my two businesses.  So maybe I should just go out and treat myself to a new gun.  Yeah - that's the ticket...!...what a swell guy I am...

And that's all I have to say about that. **words of wisdom from Forrest Gump**

Has it really been two weeks since anyone posted here?

I am new to guns, but have taken an increasing interest since early November.  I just have received a new toy, the R9 today, but only have Blazer Ammo from Walmart at this point.

I have ordered some Winchester Silver Tips, but it is back ordered weeks.  Should I take it out for a test run with the cheap ammo or wait for the good stuff?

For me, I would wait on the good stuf.  Others may disagree.  I only use Winchester Silvertips and Gold Dots.  Advice I got from Dino here on the Forum.  NO PROBLEMS.

I agree on the wait but there is some acceptable range ammo
in between the high test stuff and regular that has been mentioned
on this forum. Firing the pup is not an experiment and the fewer
variables in the ammo you use, the better.

Agree tracker, got very tired of FTF's with the other stuff and just stoped using it in my gun, silver tips and gold dots only food I feed mine now.
used up the other stuff in my sig, it will eat anything. Someone said, "like Mikey".

For what it's worth...  The R-Bros have been using Blazer ammo for years in order test fire new guns before sending them out.  That said - I have a good supply of both Silvertips and Gold Dots, so when I go to shoot one of my R9s I generally use one of them because that is what I carry in them.  But I've used Blazer and other practice ammo as well in the past with no problems...TW<<

I decided today to feed the R9 some Remington UMC FMJ ammo just to see what would happen.  That will be the last time I try that.  It would not eject several different times and then after switching to WWB ammo, it occurred again.

My next range experience will only be with the Speer Gold Dots.  I really NEED to see some failure free range trips with this gun before I feel fully confident in using it as a concealed carry gun.  One thing is for sure is that when a jam occurs, it is not easy to clear as it is difficult to remove the magazine from the gun.

One really good tip is to use only proven ammo from the Forum.  Gold Dots have success.
