When should I replace the recoil spring?

How many rounds should I fire before replacing the recoil spring on my R9?

At 500 rounds.  Others who have reached this value and replaced the spring have noticed the old spring to be significantly shorter, so this is a very important maintanance task.

The recoil spring on my unfired R9s is already significantly shorter than the 2 replacement recoil springs I have.

I replaced my recoil spring @ 400 rounds. Old spring was 2 coils shorter than new. I don't know when this would have started to make a difference, but no use taking chances. BTW, I have had ZERO malfunctions of ANY kind and am over 500 rounds.

Right now my gun is at 300 rounds. I have stopped shooting it. Last week, I sent in an order for 3 spare mags, 5 sets of recoil springs, and replacement grip screws.

I decided to replace the springs in the future at 250 rounds. That's my choice. I just don't want to worry about beating my gun to death. At 10 bucks a set, it is no big deal for me to replace them at 250 rounds. So, that's what I'm going to do.
