Title: R9 Front & Back Strap Checkering, Barrel Porting, Site Modification
Post by: billib on July 01, 2012, 04:11:20 PM
I found some interesting photos on Googles
Public Domain Photo section of a Rohrbaugh
with Front and Back Strap Checkering as well
Barrel Porting and Red Site Dots.

Can anyone shed some light on these mod's
and maybe the Pistol?

The work was done by Bob Cogan @ Accurate Plating & Weaponry.

Hard Chrome Plating Matte rounds and brushed flats
Porting
Sights drilled and colored
Front strap checkering
Back strap checkering
Front of trigger guard checkering
I believe all the checkering is 40LPI

The grips were an older style aluminum with checkering.
They are no longer available.
I am not sure if Rohrbaugh offered them or Bryce from IDM.

Rohrbaugh and Bryce both offered aluminum grips. I think these particular grips were made for Rohrbaugh by AlumaGrips but they have been re-anodized and checkered whereas the original AlumaGrips were smooth.

Thanks guys. its truly stunning work
though I don't get the porting in what
amounts to being in the middle of the
barrel.
I would have preferred a slightly longer
barrel that protrudes a little past the
Slide with the porting in the very end
of the barrel.

The rest of the mods make sense.

Its a shame Night Sights can't be
reliably installed. I like Night Sights.

Yeah, Doc the trigger gaurd checkering is not for everyone.

Since I am old school and and rest my opposing finger there to get higher up and more support, the checkering happens to work for me.

That's my gun that Bob did up for me. In regard to the ports, that's how Bob does them and I have to say, they work great! BIG difference in felt recoil and work much better than Mag-Na-Ported guns that I have. Don't know how you'd even go about getting a longer barrel for these guns. Also, I shoot with my support hand finger on the trigger guard and the checkering affords me a little extra grip. The Aluminum grips are only for show. I have VZ blue CF on the gun for everyday carry now.

Front & back strap checkering 40LPI - Approx - $250.00
Hard Chrome $180.00 + $35 to disassemble + $10.00 Aluminum charge
I dont remember the porting price
4-6 week turn around.

Thank you "Z" is it necessary to hard Chrome it?
Can the PUP remain a virgin, you know, unmolested
finish wise? I think I would prefer some other type
of finish if having it (re)finished is necessary.

i would just be interested in the porting....did it really reduce recoil? and adding the sights...how much?

I would suggest you contact Cogan yourself and let him explain it to you.

I have carried a standard finish for eight years...looks like new ;)

Thanks Jack, I'm not against re-finishing the PUP.
I simply like it the way it is now.

Can you describe the shooting effects a bit more? How is the flash and especially the extra noise with porting? I'm really interested in this and had contacted Magnaport. I asked them if they had done an R9. Here's their reply:

"I don’t see why we couldn’t port this gun.  It looks similar to the Kahr and we do a lot of those.  Send in the complete top half with spring and rod.  Cost is $145 + return shipping and insurance.  Shop time runs about 10 days.  Autoporting usually averages about 15 to 20% less felt recoil, you’ll find the biggest benefit is the reduction in muzzle rise (average about 30 to 50%)."

I like the looks of the Magnaport, but it seems to me that being on top, like yours, would be more effective.

Magnaport did a Detonics 45 for me years ago, which was the original mini 45 from the 70's.  They did a great job and it was very effective at taming recoil.  But very LOUD!

I contacted MagnaPort a couple of years ago and at that time they told me they wouldn't do a Rohrbaugh because the barrel is too thin.
With a 10 day turnaround maybe business is slow enough to rethink ding a Rohrbaugh.  ;D
