Rossi came out with a Mare's Leg that is very reasonably priced. Caliber's are .357, .44 mag, and .45 LC. Price at Able's is $406.48 when in stock. Can't find one anywhere.
This seems like a fun gun to shoot. It's in the American Rifleman for July. Gonna have to have one of these in .44 mag. ;D
These are just for fun, I know. :)

Ok, Rifleman; Chuck will be proud of you.

-
That is some video. Thanks.
-
The Rifleman was one of my favorites. I have a Winchester 73 in 44-40 that has been in my family for over 100 years. When I had it appraised the appraiser told me that the barrel had been replaced by the factory in 1929. It is a real treat to shoot; very soft.
-
Mine as well. That is some rifle you have there; in 44-40 and over 100 years old. It has got to be nice.
-
This rifle caught my eye as well. I would love to have one, definitely would be a fun gun to shoot.
-
I'm trying to find one now. Able's is the only place I've found and they are not in stock. They are suppose to notify you if you check the block.
-
Decided to call Rossi and get an update on availability; 3rd quarter, 2010.
-
Which probably means maybe sometime in 2011, right around the time the R45, Boberg XR9 and Microtec Archangel are available ;D
John
-
I sure hope not. Counting on this one to be on time! ;D Not that the R45 had a schedule.
-
Hate to be negative, but being a Rossi, the action will be rougher than a cob. But on the positive side, it costs about a thousand bucks less than the other two guys marketing custom "mares legs".
Considering the difference in cost, maybe a $100 action job won't sound so bad.
Reinz
-
We'll see. I'm gonna give it a try.
-
Hey KJ, please be sure to let us know when you get the Mares Leg. I was not knocking it. I lthink they are cool.
As a kid I loved watching Steve Mcqueen as Josh Randall in WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE. And of course I was disappointed if he did not whip out the o' 30-30 to shoot someone.
In fact, I bought all three seasons on DVD a while back and watched a few episodes. Saving the rest for a rainy day.
Reinz
-
I loved that show too. Yep! Be glad when the Mare's Leg is available. Sure wish it could be bought in the 30-30, but understand the reason.
Enjoy the WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE DVD. That's a good one to have.

ohn
-
I know, but the price is over $700.00 more than a Rossi. I'll think I'll wait.
-
I'm with KJ.
As I mention earlier, there is also another supplier, a gunsmith that customizes them as well for a similar price. I want to say- JB Smith?
For a "toy', not a serious shooter, why spend the serious bucks?
If the action is rough on the Rossi and if there is feeding issues, then spend a hundred and you will have a good little shoot'n "toy".

I have another thread called "MARE'S LEG PISOL" and the maker there is J. B. Customs, $1295, for a regular one and $1695 for a take down model.
$400 bucks for a Rossi is a deal, and Reinz, like you say, another $100 for a trigger job, would be fine; it may not even need it.

-
Yeah, that's it , I thought it was JB something.
Heh, Heh, J.B. Smith is our County Sherrif, LOL.
Where was my head at?
-
Oh, well. You got the initials right. ;D
-
I used to like J&B before Johnny Walker Black.
-
They're both probably real good! ;D
-
For anyone interested in this; available in October, 2010; $429.95.

Able's price is $426.00.

Every time I see one of those Mare's Legs, I get the inexplicably sinking feeling that someone might have taken a butcher's band saw to the stock and barrel of a classic and perfectly balanced Winchester Model 1894 fitted with a large-loop lever. I have to remind myself that the Mare's Legs were just made to look that way. Beauty being in the eyes of the beholder, who am I to question such things? :-/
-
It sure looks like sillywood to me but to each his own.
-
That's why we all like different things, sometime; I think it's cool lookin'!
-
Just try to resist the urge to flip-shoot it. This gun is a bit like a motor scooter: looks good; feels good; but you wouldn't want your friends to see you on it unless you could handle it like Steve McQueen.

Or Lucas McCain (Chuck Connors) even though he used a rifle I think he could make the Mares Leg sing.
John
-
I agree. I'll practice a lot! ;D
-
And no fast draws!
-
Surely, not! ;D
-
These are supposed to be out very soon. Can't find a ship date yet, but one guy said he should have his first shipment by Nov.7th. Placed my order for the .44 mag/.44 special with my local dealer, so we'll soon see how long it takes to get it.
By the way, if you don't like this gun, that's OK, but I'm gonna like it! ;D
-
The important thing is that you like it; some people might think it would be a handful in .44 magnum but you have much bigger punch in your arsenal than that one.
-
44 mag is a toy next to the 454 Casull with a 2.5" barrel and the 500 S&W. ;D ;D
John
-
Just use both hands.

I do like it and the punch definitely won"t be a problem. If they made it in a bigger caliber I would have gotten that, however, it should be fun.

John
The .454 and the .500 get the one handed treatment as does the Ruger .44 mag. The Mare's Leg will be a different animal. Will require two! :D
-
Just use both hands.
You're right. Will require two, for sure. Different type of gun.
-
The Rossi Ranch Hand must be in dealer's hands now. Here's one on GunBroker. Hmmm. My dealer hasn't called yet. >:(
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=196900557
-
kj,
Maybe you should get it in 45 Colt and get the chamber lengthened for the 454 Casull. ;D
John
-
Now there's a thought! ;)
-
I think they're cool. I look forward to you getting it and telling us how you like.
David

The gundealer here in town says he can't get this one, but is still trying. Called one of the ones on GunBroker and he has only one; says they are hard to come by. Called Rossi and they say they are available. Gunbroker is $120 higher than our town dealer, due to scarcity, I would think.
The dealer on gunbroker says his price is $299 when he doesn't have one. ;D
-
I just handled one this morning at my local dealer. It was .45 Colt.
Very interesting gun, and very cool. I like it, but I am not sure if I want one. It's too short to shoulder very effectively for me, so I am not sure how I would shoot it.
For me, .357 Magnum would be the way to go.
My dealer was talking about $450.
-
I'm wanting the 44. mag and town dealer's price is $430. I wouldn't try to shoulder this one, as you're right, too short. I'm just going to shoot it from the hip, and just a fun gun.
-
This may be the reason there are not a lot of them available yet, they may be holding off full production until the lawsuit is decided.

Firearms maker James Buchanan holds his Mare’s Leg gun, for which he has a federal trademark, at his shop in Huntertown.
Local gun maker fires lawsuit at Brazilian giant
Rebecca S. Green | The Journal Gazette
FORT WAYNE – Local gun maker James “Diamond Jim” Buchanan is taking on an international firearms conglomerate in a federal lawsuit, accusing the large pistol manufacturer of trademark infringement.
Brazil-based Taurus International Manufacturing, which has U.S. offices headquartered in Miami, has long been affiliated with other well-known gun makers – having once been a sister company to Smith & Wesson and buying Beretta's Brazilian factory in the 1980s, according to the company’s website.
A message left for the company seeking comment was not returned Wednesday.
By contrast, Buchanan owns and operates J.B. Custom in Huntertown, a small company making and selling gear and custom firearms for “Cowboy-style” or single-action shooting – the kind depicted in old television and movie Westerns. They are guns he says appeal to “your grandpa,” who remembers watching such programs.
“I design custom pieces and this one had been something I had been working on for a while,” he said.
A few years ago, Buchanan designed a gun based on the one carried by Steve McQueen’s character Josh Randall on the late-1950s CBS series “Wanted: Dead or Alive.”
“I redesigned it a little bit for modern usage,” Buchanan said. “It’s just very unique, interesting.”
But the gun, known as a Mare’s Leg, is a lever-action gun that looks like a rifle but has a short barrel, for which he has permission from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Buchanan obtained a federal trademark and in his lawsuit claims “common-law” rights over the use of the Mare’s Leg mark, as well as lever-action firearms of a “particular shape, design, and overall appearance.”
“It seems like every time I do, someone bigger than me wants to take it away,” he said. “I got a little smarter with this one.”
According to court documents, in 2006 Buchanan originally contracted with Amadeo Rossi S.A., a Brazil-based firearms maker, to manufacture his gun for exclusive sale in his shop. He sold the gun for about $1,700.
In 2008, Taurus bought Rossi, a rifle and revolver company, and assumed Rossi’s obligation to exclusively deal with Buchanan for the sale of the Mare’s Leg, according to court documents.
Buchanan said he never heard from Taurus about its plans or what the company intended to do about the contract.
But in July, Rossi placed an ad in an edition of American Rifleman magazine, selling the Rossi Ranch Hand lever-action gun, at one-third the price Buchanan was selling the Mare’s Leg, according to court documents.
According to the Rossi Rifle website, which is linked to Taurus’ website, the similar-looking gun is offered for sale at $536.
In his lawsuit, Buchanan alleges breach of contract, trademark infringement, passing off his work as theirs, false advertising and unfair competition.
He is asking a federal judge to prohibit Taurus and its subsidiary Rossi from further infringing on his rights, as well as the award of monetary damages, profits and fees.
“It ruined me,” Buchanan said of Rossi’s price. “That’s why we’re in federal court. I didn’t want this to have to happen, but the people are destroying me.”
Buchanan said his attempts to contact Taurus and Rossi have been unsuccessful.

That's what the dealer in town said; a lawsuit was pending, so I called Rossi and asked; they wouldn't admit that anything was brewing and I don't guess they could.
-
No surprise they won't comment. ;D
John
-
That's right. They just acted like it was news to them.
-
Based on the exclusive arrangement he had with Rossi, it sounds like he has a pretty good argument based on his side of the story.
If he is right, my prediction is the Rossi prices goes up and this guy gets a cut on every one sold. Rossi will likely sell a ton of them. And, if his version is that much better, the Rossi version may be a "gateway drug" to spur sales of the real thing.
If you want a Rossi, now may be the time to get it!
-
I was thinking the same thing. Seems like prices haven't gone up drasticly yet, except just a little on GunBroker; $100 over retail may not be too bad.

Sounds like a good idea, they may be snapped up by buyers who will put a premium price on them.
John

Some of the ones on GunBroker are not that high; like the .45 was $459. starting bid and now is $466. The 44. mag and .357 are $500 to $555 right now; so they're higher than the $416 - $430 retail at our gun shops here, if they had any.
-
One of the guys on another forum said his local shop quoted him $406 our the door, sounds pretty cheap.
John
-
Definitely. $416 is the lowest price I've gotten so far, but they don't have any.
-
FOUND IT! Shipping out today! .44 mag. Finally! :)
-
kj,
Congrats on finding one, look forward to some pics. :D
John
-
I want to see video of the thing being shot "hollywood style" with some hot Magnum loads!
-
Thanks, John; and Duane, this is about as close as I can get to a video; Steve Doran, shooting the JB Custom's Mare's Leg, similiar to the Rossi Ranch Hand. Scroll down and click on arrow.

kj,
Very nice looking, congrats on the new toy.
John
-
Awesome kj, thanks for sharing the picture.
I like this one a lot! :D
-
Thanks John and JW; now to go shoot this thing! :D
-
kj, it's Saturday, did you poke the Maree's Leg out the back door and rip off a few rounds. ;D ;D
John
-
John. Not yet. Probably will wait till the Georgia trip! :D
-
KJ - Congrats on the Mare's Leg! ;D
-
Thanks, Reinz. Now I have to learn how to flip it. ;D Did it about 20 times yesterday, unloaded; got easier each time.
-
Ok, Rifleman; Chuck will be proud of you.

Actually, Steve McQueen in the "Bounty Hunter" carried one of these.
Chief
-
Yep! And I'm really liking it; although what's there not to like if one hasn't fired it yet; I like the looks, flips good, cocks just fine even on the flip, trigger pull seems nice. Those are some things to like. Will not flip it loaded. Noooooo!
Firing it will come soon with Hornady 300 gr. 44 mags.
-
300's -- WOW!
-
Yep! Shoot the 300's in the Ruger Super Blackhawk and also 300's in the .454 Ruger Alaskan.
-
In that case, it won't be so "heartfelt' in the bigger pistol. In theory.
But still, WOW!
-
Then there's the .500 S & W with the 400 gr. mags! :D
-
Sticking with the light loads huh, you need to shoot some of the Hornady 500gr. XTPs :o ;D
John
-
The .400 mag was all the gun shop had. I have looked into the 700 gr. but so far that all I've done with that, is look. :)

-
Yeah, look at the gun - as it is flying out ouf your hands! ;D
-
:o ;D ;D
John
-
Yeah, look at the gun - as it is flying out ouf your hands! ;D
There's a guy shooting the 700 gr. from a .500 S & W on U-Tube. Seemed to handle it well, but had a not to good a word the moment after firing. ;D
-
Gee I wonder why. ;D ;D
John
-
You'd think he would have known what to expect! ;D
-
very punishing indeed!
