Title: Hedley Holster for 2" S&W J-Frame .38
Post by: Richard S on February 02, 2011, 04:14:03 PM
This just came up on eBay. I have no relationship to or knowledge of the seller other than to note that he/she is reported to have a 100% positive feedback rating after 141 transactions.

The holster looks worn, but being a Hedley it could be brought back to near-new condition with a little alcohol to remove the old polish, some black leather dye to recolor the surface, and a quality wax to seal it again. It could be a real find for any of you who carries a 2" J-Frame .38.

I got outbid on that same holster last week.  Something is fishy.

That does indeed seem strange. Perhaps an inquiry to the seller through eBay would be in order. Someone with 100% positive feedback for as many transactions as are reported for that seller would probably want to avoid any negative feedback.

Anyway, I just thought the item might be of interest given R. J. Hedley's legend around here.

Here is where I lost it at $51.  I just emailed him.

I don't even have a j frame but wanted it because of who made it.

Well here is one for you for $40 shipped made by RJ five years ago.

My new J frame 340PD would look good in that old Hedley pocket holster. ;D If you win it I'll trade you. :D

John and Corey:

In reviewing the bidding on that earlier offering of the old J-Frame holster it appears that the winning bidder, "f***r", has over 4,500 transactions with 100% positive feedback. That makes it all the more curious. The first thing to come to mind is that the buyer failed to complete payment. Or the seller might have two or more eBay accounts and put in a bid as an attempt to get a higher price. It would be interesting to know what answer you receive.

I'm not going to be bidding for the J-Frame holster, so I'm pulling for you all. Meanwhile, John, I have to ask -- for what pistol did RJ make that holster in the photograph you posted? It doesn't seem to fit the profile of the R9.

This is getting more puzzling every day.  I always thought, on Ebay, the next highest bidder would win or at least, could win, if the original winner defaulted.

Corey.  It'll be interesting to see what the seller has to say if he answers your email.

Richard,
    That is for a P-3AT

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately, I don't own a P-3AT and one is not on my "want-regardless-of-need" list. However, that holster is a classic piece of work for some P-3AT owner.

No offense meant to anyone, for Lord knows that when it comes to handguns that line from T. G. Sheppard's song, "Big, little, short, or tall -- wish I'd kept them all," could easily apply to me. However, that one tends to remind me of a blind date one of my "frat bros" arranged for me back in college with those immortal words, "She's got a great personality."   ;)

Now, Richard.  I don't own that one, however, it's not all that bad, surely.    ;D

He replied

"The first bidder backed out .I thought that the easiest way was just to relist it .Feel free to bid again .Good luck"

I call BS!  The high bidder has 4,563 transactions on ebay, he ain't backing out.  My bet is the seller and the high bidder are one in the same or are friends running prices up on each others stuff.  I'm reporting this seller to ebay.

Let's be perfectly honest. Of the 7 or 8 good friends I have who sell alot on Ebay, all have adnmitted to me they or their friends run up bids.  It's the norm and not the exception.

I dont care what "the norm" is.  Its against the rules and its wrong so why should I overlook it?

Corey.  You shouldn't overlook it, and I would do exactly what you are going to do.  It isn't the norm and agree it's wrong.  I've been buying on Ebay for quite sometime now and have won more than I have lost and haven't noticed anyone running up the bids on me.

I buy Lionel Electric Trains all the time.  I do put in an automatic bid, knowing what I will pay, and let that do it's thing.

How do you prove it and how do you enforce it?

Report it, like Corey is going to do.  The Ebay officials can then do their thing.

I use eBay quite often for purchases, only rarely for selling. As such, I appreciate those sellers who are up front by posting a required opening bid they are willing to accept if it goes no further or by simply listing a "Buy-It-Now" price from the beginning. I've gotten into a few "bidding frenzies" with the One-Click-Bid feature in which I suspected that the sellers themselves might be driving the action.

The bottom line is that some auctions are a lot like poker.   8)

It also happens at live antique auctions or any other place where "Caveat Emptor" is the auctioneer.

I've been to a few of those, and decided I need not make it a habit!    ;D

I am not saying that running up the bid on your own stuff is right.  I am glad you are reporting it, but there is no way of proving it.  I spend a lot of time on Gunbroker and believe me, I know when it is happening and I get out.  Proving it is another matter.  I was just stating the facts.

I agree and I doubt if this kind of gaming is very high on E-Bay's priority list. You can notify them if you wish but good luck on any substantive results.

I,m sure ebay has the resources to check the sellers past auctions and see if there is a pattern with one or more late high bidders "backing out" after winning and the item being relisted.

I do agree.  All needs to be done is reporting the act and the Ebay officials can take it from there.
