I picked one up today in 45 at the local gun shop, hope to shoot it tomorrow.
It's not particularly pretty but feels good in my hand.

John:

That sounds like a blind date one of my frat brothers arranged for me back in college.  ;)

Congratulations on being the first one to report bagging an elusive Doubletap, and good luck with it at the range session.  I'll be looking forward to your report.

I only had a few minutes today to take the hand cannon out back and shoot it. I meant to grab six rounds of 230gr ball ammo but actually only grabbed five. lol  Popped the barrels open and dropped two in closed it and took aim on a hanging twenty pound propane tank, (old and empty) I like it because it's roughly the size of an upper torso. Distance was roughly twenty feet, first shot missed the next four all found there mark.
Triggers a little stiff but I'm use to a 1911 for most of my shooting lately, recoil is not as bad as I was expecting but you wouldn't want to run a box of fifty through it in one outing. ;D
The next time I take out to shoot I'll put up a silhouette target and spend a little more time with it, probably in the next few days because I'm picking up a Ruger SP101 tomorrow and will want to put some rounds through it also.

Awesome...congrats.  Very little review info available yet.  I check every few days to see if anything new shows up on YouTube.

Tap Tap, Tap Tap.  Due tomorrow.  I broke down and bought one when I found one NIB on GB for $400 delivered.  So nice to not pay a premium for a change.

I got delayed by a week when my 45 turned out to be a 9mm when I opened the box.

Very good videos!  They confirm my first impression that I want nothing to do with these pistols.

Bruce:

Thank you for the time and effort obviously required to produce those excellent videos.  You certainly have answered all of the questions I had about the DoubleTap, and you have saved me the cost of purchasing one.

It occurs to me that the manufacturer might consider offering an optional accessory for the weapon -- a prayer book from such religion as might be specified by the purchaser.   ;)

I appreciate the feedback fellas.  I've been a cheerleader for this pistol for so long that folks were wearing me out with messages asking when my review was coming.  I bought this thing as a specific use pistol that will be loaded with specific use ammunition.  I'm stuck at the house this weekend, but I've got some interesting terminal tests in mind.  Once those are complete, I'll tell my DT45 story with a full review write up on the blog.

Ljutic, good work.

As far as the dimple on the firing pin. I could not judge how deep it was from your video. However, I believe I know the cause.

Upon recoil the unfired round slams back into the recoil shield. Since there is a firing pin as well there, held by a spring, the recoil force will naturally cause a small pseudo strike. A very light one.   The top barrel will always be deeper than the bottom, in micro measurements.

To get around this light strike, either use stiffer firing pin springs or set the firing pin deeper. Of course this would mean a longer, harder trigger pull.

Or redesign with a cartridge retaining gap design.

But the designers probably felt the dimple was inconsequential as do I.

But again, you were there, I wasn't.

Please keep us apprised of the situation.

Disappointed doesn't even come close to describing what I'm feeling about the DoubleTap.  http://mousegunaddict.blogspot.com/2013/09/doubletap-tactical-pocket-pistol-45-acp.html

Thanks for the review

Hey it really is a "Double Tap", and if you want the round from the top chamber to hit your target, you really do have to use it as a "belly gun" and actually aim for the belly.

I really really wanted one of these even though it didn't make a lot of sense, basically the same size and weight of the R9 with 5 less rounds, the only thing it had going for it was not being picky about ammo and maybe a little more reliability - no stovepipes or failure to feed for example.  But the R9 is so similar in size and weight, with 5 more rounds it really didn't make a lot of sense.

Rohrbaugh R9
Caliber:9mm
Barrel:2.9"
Length:5.2"
Height:3.7"
Weight:13.5 oz
Capacity:6+1 Rounds

Double Tap Defense Double Tap
Caliber:.45 ACP or 9mm
Barrel:3.0"
Length:5.5"
Height:3.9"
Weight:13.0 oz for Aluminum, 15 oz for Titanium
Capacity:2 Rounds

I thought an advantage of the Double Tap over the R9 would be the ability to fire +P ammo.  I reasoned that a gun meant to fire 45 ACP must be robust enough to fire 9mm +P, but actually the DoubleTap is not rated to fire +P 9mm ammo, and after your video I can understand why.  The right recoil impulse can set off the second round.

I'm wondering if firing the top chamber first every time lessens the probability of getting a double detonation.

I'll let the next reviewer test out that theory.  One of the tests I was planning to include last weekend was timed draw and fire practice using both the top and bottom barrel for the first shot.  I've added all I can to the body of knowledge on the DoubleTap.  Time for someone else to take their turn.

You are free to compare as you see fit.  In my opinion, the only fair comparison is with a Bond Arms derringer.
