Title: Outside My Windows II - A Feel Good Gathering
Post by: MountainMan on February 09, 2006, 10:52:05 PM
"Outside My Windows - A Magical Morning"  was a thread I started were friends could gather.  The idea was a thread were people could post and talk about things that made them feel good.

The posters were encouraged to drift the thread anywhere they pleased.

I had never imagined the original "Outside My Windows" thread would go to 18 pages with 267 replies and 3338 views.

The thread was ended because it was too large for members that did not have a high speed connection.  If you are a new member please feel free to dig it up and browse some great "feel good posts".

So as the starter of the first "Outside My Windows" thread I would like to say;

LET "OUTSIDE MY WINDOWS II - A FEEL GOOD GATHERING" BEGIN.

AND MAY IT DRIFT FAR AND WIDE AND BE HIGHJACKED MANY TIMES.

That was a good idea.  We get to retain the wonderful things brought forth in this thread, all beginning with Dave's super pictures.

I'm at my cabin up north, on the dialup, so I especially appreciate starting again.

Well done Dave and thx - I do think this'll help for a while - until we get another 18 pages of pics and stuff! ;D

Trying to think of a pic I can put in to get us going - hmmm -

Know what guys, I am gonna post what I consider to be one of the all time most evocative images IMO - ''Reflections''.  It affects me deeply every time I see it, and I need few excuses to help us remember and honor the guys who defend our nation - those present, past and passed too.

I salute them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just to add - maybe where possible, compress our pics down too - to try and keep them smaller - like 50k - 100k max - that would also help the slower folks.
Chris,
That picture always meant a lot to me.  Many times I have just stood and looked at it.  It was a time that was tragic and very special.  Since people rotated out one at a time there never was a special leaving and returning as there is now with a whole company going, staying, and returning home together.  In a way it was a very lonely war.
Dave:
Thanks for reprising "the grand old thread."
And Chris:
Thanks for posting that haunting photograph.  I had not seen it for a long time.  "Lest we forget . . . ."
I'm off on the road for a few days -- unfortunately not to the Shot Show.  Keep the Forum going.   ;)
The WALL, wow, how soon we forget all the pain. It however, just shows us all that our military are very special people who fight for our freedom. We owe them alot, the wall helps us all remember how important they are in our lives as a country.
Thanks Dave, for continuing this thread, my favorite.
A Few Unusual Man Made things I've Seen This Year
Thinnest building in North America - Canada
(http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/melissa1948/P1000004.jpg)
One of the worlds few working steam clocks - Canada
(if you have a verizon cell that plays videos I can send you a flix with sound of the clock in action - PM me)
Wow - a steam clock - never knew there was one still working!  So I guess some poor sucker has to go check the fuel every day ;D
Ahhh yes that building - is that not the ''Flat Iron'' Building?  Or is there one similar in NYC or somewhere else?
Thx for the pix Dave.
Both pictures were taked in Vancouver Chris.  I'll send you an email with the cell phone video of the steam clock in action with sound attached.  Don't know for sure the attachment will work.
Thx Dave - Do you have my real email?
If so it should attach OK - is it AVI or MOV - either should work - or any other accepted file type really.
Title: Re: Outside My Windows II - A Feel Good Gathering
Post by: MountainMan on February 10, 2006, 10:34:50 PM
Chris - let me know if you get it and if it works for you.  For some reason those cell videos work better on my work computer than the home one.
Title: Re: Outside My Windows II - A Feel Good Gathering
Post by: R9SCarry on February 10, 2006, 10:55:48 PM
Ahhh - email is in Dave, thank you - and well, the file was pretty wierd with name and no extension!!  Probably plays in your special cell software.
Tried it as AVI - no good but when I made it .MOV - success and it played in VLC media player! :).  I called the file 'steamclock.mov' and this should play for anyone else in Quicktime player.
Fascinating - in particular the amount of steam released !!!!  I hope maybe the whole thing is hooked up to town water - and, natural gas supply, otherwise someone would be awful busy.
Anyone else who might enjoy a view of it - CLICK HERE  (http://www.thingameez.com/vid-download/steamclock.mov) - I have put it on one of my servers.
Chris, thanks for that photo.  The first time I saw it I was in college and couldn't help but stop and stare every time I saw it.  I never did have the money to buy it back then, even though I wanted to.  There is so much feeling in that picture.  I think it makes us, who weren't there understand, just a little bit.  Pure emotion.
On a side note to the Vietnam theme, I worked with a guy a while ago who's Lt. while he was over there has written a book called, "Phase Line Green; The Battle for Hue, 1968"  Good book if you are interested.  It was very cool to read the book and then talk to one who was there and get "the rest of the story".
Roc - I am dead sure there are thousands of untold stories - many of the potential writers probably could not express and write about.  So much hurt and pain.  if I had more reading time i might get that book - first hand accounts are usually rivetting reading.
Dave - I had assumed that clip had no sound but what you said in email suggested it did.  Oh well - it is still great to just see the action of it!
Not sure if I posted this before but anyways - here to hopefully lift spirits and cabin fever - is what we may look forward too later in the year.  I have several other summer type pics and may post one or two more - to keep spirits up!
Boy do I need spring and some real green again!!!
There we have - the ''bear facts'' about Brenden's R9 ownership :)
Three Brenden pups - shucks man - I hope your early one gets back-of-safe space to rest and appreciate!!
That 19 year old info - is that worked out from dentition - or what?  Not sure how you'd do that.
Bedford County here had a tally of 94 bears IIRC - up 200% on previous year.
While this is definately not where I live, I imagine it has to be one of the best ways to wake up. To look out your window and see the Rocky Mountains each morning.
This is actually base housing on Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. Pretty decent.
The bear that I had taken was ear tagged..So there was accurate info on the animal..
They tracked and collected a ton of info thru following bears thru radio collars-which she was one early on in her life..
I happen to know the person that dealt with these animals and therefore know a "bit" more info than normally..
Bear Facts...I do like that Chris.. 8)  ;D
Brenden,  Congrats on that bear. 298 pounds is alot of chile. They are tough to come by.  I got my 1st one this season.. I've been hunting 32 years now.  Here in NY  the biologists check out all bears killed.  They took the small tooth  behind the incisor on each side. Somehow they determine the age from the teeth.  Hopefully the next one won't take me another 32 years. Dan
Now for something completely different! :)
Was cleaning this piece of glass artistry today - boy does dust settle fast!  My parents had this for the longest time and I always liked it immensely - since they passed I have been able to enjoy it daily in more recent years.
This is made by Lichfield Glass in England and for me is exquisite.  Many have seen ''ship in bottle'' stuff but I am amazed by the skill that must be needed to achieve this sort of result.  Glass art never fails to please and amaze me.
Hope you can enjoy, tho pics do not do full justice.
Chris
That is really special!  Thanks for posting it.  It must have meant a lot to your parents and I bet they would smile that you have now placed a picture of it on the web.
Stayed over night at my parents last night to help out.  As I was laying there after all were asleep the memories of years gone by were as they say, "so thick you could cut them with a knife".  My dad was in the hospital for several days and got back yeasterday.   Don't know how long my mom has left, could be as little as two months, her pain is really increasing.
So I just got back home and your pictures put a smile on my face.
Dave, Isley is still OK. However, it has become a contest of wills for awhile. We both need the service dog trainer to help us go to our corners and train me to get him to do the work.
Kathleen is doing OK it seems, she is almost done with the chemo and then the surgery and then radiation. She should be back in May.
Dan - first thing I notice is that site does not supposedly support Opera - which I use in part.  That tho should be incidental re pics showing.
Now the link you have - http://pictures.aol.com/ap/myAlbums.do - that is in itself not going to bring any pics up.  I am not familar with that hosting service but - the usual ''look'' to a URL which would display a pic might be - (and here I am leaving off http and www ) --
yourpichostsite.com/myalbums/danspics/samplepic.jpg
Note, the last item is an image filename.  I am not sure in that URL about the ''''myalbums.do'' - seems odd.  But anyways there should be some way to get a unique URL for each and every pic you store - you'll have to check that out.  Then hopefully put the whole deal for any pic between the ''img'' tags.
Check it out further - see if any more info you can get.
Nice Bear Dan.
As Chris said try and make the pictures smaller - it makes the picture easier to view and download
 for some without throwing the screen size off.  You're getting it.
As long as we are showing Bears.  I posted this Grizzly on the forum Dan before you joined.
Took the picture in the Alaska bush last summer from way too close.
Dan - now you have it right!
Nice picture - what state - looks like a PA bear.
When the thread goes to a new page everything will be back to normal size- you can still resize the first picture if you want
- I do that a lot - need to do "modify".
Post often Dan.
Dave - your wife is one lucky lady - but you of course are one lucky guy!!
Just in passing - I designed and maintain this site for a lady in Colorado (http://www.designsbyrydz.com/) - she makes some very interesting jewelry - and some might like to take a peek.
Dan - that other pic is fine tho in fact reduced a tad more than you need.  A good rule of thumb is to aim for on screen size of approx 640x480 pixels - and compress to a filesize of around 50k-100K.
Dave,  The bear was taken in NY.  Catskills up in the high peaks.  I have 115 acres  surrounded on all 4 sides by a Conservation Co-op.  1100 acres in a forever wild program.  My Hunting club leases the hunting rights from the cc. The bear was two ridges above where my property ends.  But I saw him twice during the summer in my back yard.
Chris, second picture was 640x480. resized first picture to 640x480. using irfanview  How do I make the dimensions of the picture smaller?  Dan
Title: Re: Outside My Windows II - A Feel Good Gathering
Post by: R9SCarry on February 15, 2006, 03:46:22 PM
Dan - the first pic has resized to 400 x 300 - the second one is actually 320 x 240!!  Both in fact come over just fine as they are and file sizes are very reasonable.
Irfanview does a great job but seems maybe your choice of resize was off a bit.  Irfanview offers some pre-set dimensions one of which is 640 x 480 but you can select your own choice too.
If as I assume you use windows - hover mouse over file in windows explorer and you should see a flyout with data - which will give a check on size.  Do some more experiments - that will help probably.  You're gettin there :)
Bill,
A week?
I have "maybe" a months worth-of course they are MREs-don't think my young ones would appreciate some of them!! ;)
Nah-when I was younger,I would "challenge" the storm,and not let it whip me!! ;)
Now,with kids,and wife,(can't forget her) I have gotten old!! ;)
It still is what it is,and the snow is STILL fallin!! ::) ;D
Brenden - not maybe so many of us can say that and it is good to hear.  I can say it too overall - and even tho my 1st marriage was dissolved in 87' - I could not have my two kids (hah - kids no more!) without it - who I love and are close friends.
My 2nd marriage comes up to 6 year mark this summer and I have cherished every darned second of it.
BTW - keep that snow - I don't need much ya know!  Promised high winds tomorrow tho - yuk!
If I remember I started it as a place for people to drift and hijack the thread constantly on what interested them without anyone complaining.  In a way there are many little threads inbedded in the big one and that is great.
The blizzard howled here last night. Over a foot of new snow accompanied by winds to 50 MPH. I was awakened at 0400 when I felt the house shudder.
Imagine a blank sheet of paper. That's how it looks "Outside My Windows".
My wife and I are back at home base after a week of travel (a judicial conference and a medical checkup for her, CLE courses and some business matters for me), and I'm still catching up on the posts to the Forum in general and this magnificent thread in particular.  Great photographs and wonderful stuff here!
I can't post a photograph of the gift which my wife gave to me for Valentine's day last Tuesday, but I can describe it -- a CT scan which shows no sign of any cancer anywhere in her body!  And this is from a woman who was given only three months to live when her cancer was first diagnosed in November 2004!  Her friends call her "the walking miracle."  Her oncologist just smiles and describes her case in medical journals.
After we left the oncologist's office on "Cloud Nine," I drove her to the most elegant shopping mall in the State capital and proceeded to follow her around through the shops, leaving her side now and then only long enough to carry armloads of new coats, dresses, skirts, sweaters, blouses, shoes, and books to the car.
Times like this seem to place things in proper perspective and help me remember what is truly important in life.
All the best, my "cyber friends."  It's good to be back.
My dear "Cyber Friends" (and you know who you are):
Please know that I have posted these reports on Joyce's remarkable progress in her fight against cancer not only to express my own profound joy but also to offer what I believe to be realistic hope to those of you who also are either fighting the monster or helping a loved one to do so.
Looking back on my life from the vantage ground of my 68th year, it appears that I spent my first 57 years defying the odds and the last 11 trying to make amends.  The older I become, the more I seem to appreciate the gifts of life which I had previously ignored or taken for granted.
Who was it who first said, "Youth is wasted on the young"?
Take care.  Stay safe.
You are having all the snow and here I sit with a Bobcat with a heated cab and snow plow waiting for some snow fun.  I took it out yesterday just to run it.  We had a good wind storm before light today.  Had a few large limbs come down.  My large limbs are larger than many people's trees.  House is ok.
Dave those are beautiful.  I have always greatly admired the folks who do such work and in fact somewhere have some astounding pics of this done, I believe, in China!
Richard, Dave, Bill, Dick, Steve, Tom, TW and so many others - if there is one thing that truly saddens me, it is that the chances of us meeting and shaking hands is so remote as to be probably impossible.  We can but continue to enjoy ''company'' thru this medium.
That in itself has over time been a great source of pleasure for me.  I am glad to have this small haven of friendship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

To add - we had that nasty wind - woke me up this morning - but glad to say no major tree downers.

I agree Chris.  The nice thing about the forum is that you get to make friends through knowing more of what makes up the person.

This is sometimes better than the prejudices around appearance, age, economics and etc., that society many times puts in as road blocks of getting to the the real individual inside.

Tom

I finally figured out why you are having trouble with your new service dog, Isley, following your commands.

For those who don't know Tom (theirishguard) has shared with us that he received a service dog recently to help him with his daily life because of his handicapp.

Tom - I think it is because Isley is a yankee dog and can't understand that southern Texas drawl of yours.

You said Isley was to help you get up if you take a tumble.

 Well I have a picture of what happened when you said, "Isley. I would like you and I to practice on my falls".

But what Isley heard was ....

Now Tom - aren't you glad I figured this out.  :) :)

But until then .........

Tom I still think you need to be more careful when giving your service dog Isley command directions.

Below is a picture that was taken after Isley heard you saying,

Duane,

There is another landmark out there, called Devil's Tower National Monument.  It is a great place to see, and not too far from the Interstate.

http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vwdocs/Parks/devils_tower/devils_tower.html

It was seen in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".

Unfortunately, after checking it out, it's another two hour ride.

FireBreather01,

Those pictures are remarkable.  Fine job!

Darn,

You got me going there for a second -- I LOVE that movie.  A classic.  Unfortunately, it is a business trip and a whirlwind tour.  I booked a flight a few hours earlier than I needed on Tuesday so I could fit in a run to Mount Rushmore before dark.  Wednesday in a morning meeting, then flying home.

I have been fortunate to see a lot of this country on quick side trips relating to business travel.  I always like to rent a Hertz car with the GPS "Neverlost" system -- that way I can wander around in my free time and have no serious fears of getting lost!

And as for my sleeping bag --- its called a Radisson.   ;D

Those are beautiful photographs of your lake front under a blanket of snow!

As I was sitting here gazing at your photos, my mind wandered back to a Saturday in February some 35 years ago when I and three SCUBA-diving buddies of mine -- all of us suffering what could only be described as temporary insanity brought about by an attempt to impress certain members of the opposite sex -- donned wet suits and went SCUBA diving in a snow-and-ice storm on the Chesapeake Bay.  Even with the wet suits, we lasted only about 15 minutes.  I remember that the water was as clear as gin, but what I remember most of all was learning the true meaning of hypothermia.   :o

Well folks - remember the Concealed Carry Mag' cover last August - with my step daughter on front cover?

She turned 21 today and thought I'd take a pic or two quickly before sun went down.  We went out to get giant wings and enjoy (well she and Bonnie did) a Bacardi (or two) and Pepsi :wink:

Poor thing still looks so young she knows she'll be carded for years to come but hey - she'll like that one day!  Soon be getting her her own and first pistola (she has shot plenty of mine already) - and also get the CCW fixed up.  I have her in my next Basic Pistol course too in May - all go, go, go :smilez:

On the assumption everyone likes a pretty face - here are a coupla pics for you. :)

I sure am proud and love her to bits - just wish I could claim the genetic input - that said my own blood daughter is a beautiful lady too (natural paternal bias of course!).

See pic below with her, my SIL and wonderful grandson Matt - this was late last year.  It's a proof copy BTW.

Like many of us older folks - I look at this new generation coming up - and wonder what is in store - but wish them all that is good and feel ever so mortal!!

How does one describe a father's love??  Not sure that we can - but it goes deep - real deep.

I hear the temporary insanity and scuba diving thing.  I belonged to a diving club up in NJ that had a tradition of going down to this railroad bridge in Point Pleasant on New Year's Day.  Well, one year we went in, I think the wanter temp was right around 30, salt water, and there was ice floating around.  Even with a dry suit it didn't take long for my feet to become ice cubes.  Now that I am in Florida if the water is colder than 78 I am not going in.   ;D  Spoiled rotten.

Now, I'm going back to look at your new truck, for motivational purposes.  My 1995 Ford pickup is starting to look too used.

Another national treasure...

These were taken on Tuesday in the late afternoon.  The lighting is a little dark because the sun had already dipped behind the mountains.  Temperature was 25 degrees and about 20 mph wind.  (Thus, no other people in the pictures!  ;D)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/DDGator/Frommaingate.jpg)

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/DDGator/Closeup.jpg)

This, on the other hand, was taken Wednesday in the early afternoon. Boy, the sun is bright in South Dakota!  For those that don't recognize it, this is the Crazy Horse memorial near Hill City, S.D.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/DDGator/Fromparkinglot.jpg)

For those unfamiliar with the story, below is a shot of the 1/34th scale model of what this memorial will (or may?) ultimately look like.  They have been working for 60 years so far...

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/DDGator/Picture066.jpg)

Hope you enjoy these!  :)

They are grand pictures.  I liked everything about the place.

Even the visitor center was first class.

Duane, thanks for the great pictures, it brings back great old memories. The summer after high school and college some friends and I went there and climbed the Mt Rushmore Mtn from the back side. There is storage area and caves behind the faces. We then discovered an easier way down or up off the far right side of the faces. I have some old slides of this. How do I convert and put them in the computer so I can post them?

Duane - thanks for those great pics - excellent.  One of many places I would like to see - but the list is long!!!

Tom - re slides.  Only way I would tackle those is - using a suitable scanner, with a top light source (this needs a special type head really) - scan a slide at high res - I use 600 usually.  Once scanned it can be enlarged.

If you have a few pics you really want digitized, I would be happy to do some for you if you felt they could safely be wrapped and mailed.  You have but to ask Sir.

According to my calculations, the statue of Crazy Horse (Tashunca-uitco) might just be completed by the year 2077, the 200th anniversary of his death.

Yeah, it's pretty much a "politically correct" quiz, and some of the questions are "crap shots" -- such as the ones about "staring down" sharks and not conserving your water if lost in the desert.  Also we should all be thankful that Todd Beamer and the other heroes of United Flight 93 did not adopt the rationale behind Questions 6, 7, and 8 on 9/11.

Great photograph, Dave!  Reminds me of an old joke:

Three hikers on a mountain path suddenly come face to face with an enormous grizzly bear, which rises up on its haunches and roars at them.

First Hiker:  "What should we do?"

Second Hiker:  "I think all three of us should run as fast as we can back down this path."

Third Hiker:  "That's crazy!  Don't you know that a man can't outrun a full-grown grizzly bear?"

Second Hiker:  "I know, I know, but I'm betting that I can outrun at least one of the two of you."

 ;)

My little wife made a comment on the subject to which I had no ready response.  She said, "Daddy always taught me not to shoot a bird until it was well in the air, so as not to pepper a good friend or ruin a good hunting dog."

Carrying a gun while golfing may not be such a bad idea -- the course my brother plays during the summer has balck bears on it pretty regularly -- he takes his glock in 45 ACP w. ball ammo - not too sure what that would do -- maybe I could get him to carry my 357 mag.

Guys - slight deviation - well anything fits in here right! ;)

Found an old bit of vid so dropped it into puter and edited - just a wee little clip of the BFR in action!!  One of my ''boomsticks'' LOL!

First shot was a buddy having a try - he is not quite new to shooting but you may notice his recoil has a bit more ''shock'' effect - he doesn't let the gun ''flow'' with its recoil.

I am the opposite and let the gun climb freely, even exaggerating it might appear, but that way much more comfortable I find.  45-70 rocks!

Just right click and save file.  Only 1.2Mb

Discovered this morning that two hawks had just built a nest "outside my windows".  The nest is way up in a tree about 70 yards back from the house. I used a zoom setting and some cropping to get the attached pictures - maybe in the future I'll be able to get some better ones.

The pictures were taken from inside the house on a very dreary cloudy day.  As long as they leave my dog alone the hawks will be welcomed.
(left pictures a little larger so they can be seen better)

Those hawks are awesome!  Red tailed maybe?  Keep an eye and hopefully you can get some fledgeling photos in the weeks to come.
Speaking of birds of prey, we had a Peregrine Falcon, I think from my wife's description since I was at work at the time, dive bomb the screen room trying to get at the canaries and finches my wife keeps.  She said it bouces off flew around and tried again.  After that she let the dogs out and they kept it from trying a third time.  No damage to the screen that I could see, but I guess if they can survive Wilma a diving bird of prey is no match.  Crazy stuff though.

That BFR vid of your friend looks like me when I shot the .454 for the first time the other week.  I guess it takes practice to make it smooth.

When in high school a friend and I raised and trained 2 red tail hawks to hunt for us. After that we then moved on to catch 2 young peregrine falcons and trained them to hunt. Went to S Dakota on a peasant hunt and used my falcon instead of a shotgun. Now those were the days.

Beautiful boat!  I once helped a friend bring one similar to that from the Bahamas to Annapolis.

Speaking of hawks and owls snatching their dinner from in front of your eyes, I've seen it happen at our cabin's feeding station.  We have a pair of hawks nesting nearby.  Here's a photo of four squirrels defying the odds:

Chris - I have thought of that also.  Outside My Windows II has filled up faster than the original OMW.  As a courtesy to those without a high speed connection we try to start a new thread before it gets too large. The original Outside My Windows thread went 18 pages.

Therefore after 15 pages on this one (which should happen soon), with your agreement, I'm going to stop it and I will start the next "feel good" thread continuation - where thread drifting and hijacking is a requirement.

It will take us into the start of Spring and get us thinking about summer.  So after two more pages we will start:

Looking at that picture of you on the boat I know now where I've seen that before.

The original Jaws movie - that know it all young guy (forget his name) standing on deck before he went diving and the shark sunk the boat.  Not saying you are a know it all,  the picture just looks like it could have been from the movie.

Do you believe................

In Big Foot? The evidence seems compelling. I was watching a History Channel show on that subject and most eye-witness accounts seem very believable to me.

How about aliens? There are some strange occurences out there, I generally lean towards no but you never know...

Dave, thx - yes be good to kick off #III soon - it'll help Brenden I think, for one.  This thread will become famous - particularly when we get (as we will) to #10 and beyond ;)

FB - re Bigfoot, Aliens - any paranormal stuff - I have a way of regarding all this.  I am a sci-tech guy by education and nature and so am fairly critical of many things but, bottom line - I need proof.  That said I need proof for - or proof against - without these two fulfilled I remain an open-minded ''maybe!

Richard,

Being a computer nerd, I tried to calculate the number of atoms in the known universe.

It is something like 10 with an exponent of 79 then multiplied by 6.

You see various estimates which are all, more or less, about the same.

I guess the bigger question is how many living creatures are there in the universe.

Bill:

I'm an old history major.  The mere thought of attempting to calculate 10 with an exponent of 79 and then multiplying the result by 6 causes my eyes to blur, my stomach to turn, and my head to hurt.   :-/   ;)

Those numbers do seem large!

Well, what I should have said was how utterly beautiful the space images are.  That was a great candidate for showing here.  Thanks for finding it.

Dave sure got us on the correct path by starting the thread.

This thread sure moves fast so I will summarize. Dave the boat is heavy over 8 tons so although not the fastest in the bunch it does handle the seas very well.                              Bill I'm on the south shore of Long Island.  Great South Bay     I have about a 45 minute run to get out the inlet.  Chris  there is nothing like it.  I don't think I could give it up.  Thanks again for your tutoring  ;D

Dan, I got mixed up and thought you were in Michigan.  My apologies.

My remarks about Lake Michigan and Lake Huron didn't make much sense.

Dave  I 've caught my share of large sharks. Nothing better than a Mako steak.  This one makes me proud.  My daughter 12 at the time catching her first Mako.  The fish was just a pup but so was my girl.(http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e135/REMAXDTM/P8070167.jpg)
Bill no apologies needed.

Great pic Dan - if a tad large!! ;)

Back to Hubble theme for a bit - and hoping this will display - one of (the many) almost unbelievable pics from the Hubble program.

And also even better - go download some of the video's - well worth seeing.

What a wonderful photograph of a priceless moment!

Mako?  Did someone say Mako?  Here's a six-footer I managed to catch off Ocean City, Maryland.  It took over an hour to get him into the boat,
by which time I was almost as worn out as he was.

Richard,  6ft Mako  I'm sure you had your hands full.  You don't want him to the boat to soon.  Stick a gaff in him when he is still green and thats when people get hurt.  They have been known to jump right in the boat.  How much did he weigh?

FireBreather01,  I do believe there is something to the legends.  To many people say they have seen bigfoot for it for it to be a hoax.  That said I have been itching to walk around a friends cabin with big foot shoes on because I know it would spook him.  Just haven't worked out the logistics.  Dan

Dan:

He weighed in at 110 pounds.  I hooked him while trolling for dorado using a ballao as bait on a 35-pound-test line.  The first time he jumped, I figured the line wouldn't last more than a minute or two.  He won the Ocean City Marlin Club's season record for Mako.  The trophy and certificate are in the photograph.  (Sometimes you get lucky.)

Nice shark - I bet your house is interesting to tour.
What room is that shark in?

Dave:

When the photograph was taken, the shark was hanging in the bedroom of my "bachelor pad" between marriages.  All of my trophies are now consigned to a room which I call my den and my elegant and beloved little wife calls, "The Wilderness."   ;D

Hey Dave - that is cool SWF - simple but fun!

Richard - congrats on that superb specimen you caught - proud man that day eh - and since!

''Wilderness'' - hmmm sounds almost complementary compared with what my dear wife might call my office sometimes.  ;;Disaster Area'' might be one (printable) option! ::) ;D

Dave, that SWF file is fun.  It took me a while to figure out that it is a "Flash" type of file extension.

Richard, you must have been exhausted after catching that shark.    It's quite a prize.  Congratulations.

I don't live as remote as some folks and would certainly relish positions such as Dave has, FlyandScuba, Richard - some others too.

But anyways - having just got some aerial pics thru I commissioned taken by ''American Images'', thought I'd post one showing a flavor of the general setting.

My place is the one bottom center, with very light reddish brown roof colors.  In the distance is Evitts Mountain, which runs SSW clear down one side of Cumberland valley to near Cumberland MD.

What a wonderful setting.  I've always dreamed of being near a mountain, and surrounded by woods.

Great picture.

Room to breathe Tom yes - and that is good.

Mountains are rather small in some ways, compared with say the Shenendoah Valley in VA - a very attractive area.  Also the North of PA has probably more dramatic heights too. IIRC 3,000 ft or so is about max in this area.

That last pic was looking approximately East - here is another looking about 120º clockwise and so looking to SW direction.  In distance is the Allegheny range.
