Shock and anger
« on: November 09, 2006, 04:08:28 PM »
Are we all shocked, angry, or both at the elections? This
is the quietest I have seen this forum in awhile.

William Safire published a good Op-ed piece in the NY Times
today titled, "After the Thumpin'". He closed it by saying,"
So cheer up fellow right-wingers, especially those of you who
have grown too accustomed to winning every election night.
Sometimes we have to suffer a loud, corrective slap before
readying the political counterpunch".

That's a comforting thought.  Still and all, the next two years are going to be difficult.  Like Kinky Friedman, I've been thinking about retiring "in a petulant snit on a goat farm."

That is what Kinky said he would do if Rick Perry won--
which he did. He said he would move to France if Chris
Bell won, and if the old grandma won, he would shoot
himself. Luckily, he already has the goat farm.

I believe the message was , "You are not doing the will of the people".

The non- action on border security, runaway spending, and no end in sight for the War.  Of course, the  Mark Foley  thing was a BOMB, with the timing..

The GOP needed a wakeup call, Politicians do learn,  notice how GUNS were not mentioned,  they will be NOW !

The democrats have taken on the NRA before, much to their
regret, then you began seeing democratic candidates in
photos with shotguns, hunting jackets, etc. I'm not nervous
on the gun issue yet but it is always a favorite liberal target.

Even though gun control is a major plank in the Demagogic party platform, they had to rely on a lot of true pro-gun candidates (not just the Clinton and Kerry types who pose with shotgusn at election time to pretend to be pro-gun).  I don't think gun control is moving anywhere any time soon.  Even if it does, we still have enough to filibuster it in the Senate.  Unfortunately we can't count on a Bush veto.

I know fellow conservatives who have stayed home or voted third party because they are sick of having to choose between disappointing Republicans and dangerous Democrats.  Unfortunately the Republican party has, for many years, taken the attitude that conservative Christians could be ignored because they had nowhere else to go.  As they found out, they ignore their core at their peril.  The Demagogic party beat us in voter turnout.  Even McCain seems to have figured it out.  The GOP really needed this kick in the tail, and I am happy it didn't happen in a presidential election year.

It will also be good that, in 2008, the Demagogic party will have had 2 years to do something about Iraq.  Regardless of whether you believe we belong there or not (I believe we do but there are good arguments on both sides), it cost the GOP.  When 2008 comes and it is time to elect a new president, that monkey won't just be on the Republican's collective backs.

The down side of the election is that the terrorists will view it as a sign that they are successfully wearing us down, and will step up their attacks.

I did vote straight Republican, and I don't like the outcome, but there is a silver lining in this cloud.

Well, it could have been worse.  This could have been the 2008 election and we'd be stuck with Hillary or worse for four years.
Bush won in 2004 and Republicans held both houses of congress.  So things can turn around in only two years.
Now the Demon-crats hold both houses of congress and they have two years to screw things up so bad that we vote them out in 2008!
The important thing is for the Republican party to select a really good candidate for president.  If they run some old guy because its "his turn", then we are in real trouble.
And the Rebublican senators & reps must return to party principles.......

There, I feel better.  Anyway that's the best face I can put on the whole mess.

Keep in mind that there are a large number of Republicans In Name Only who are quite happy to push the liberal agenda.  PA just elected a pro-life, pro-gun Demagogic party senator.  It is too bad that it was Santorum rather than Specter who was up for reelection this time, because PA's senator situation would have improved with Santorum and Casey rather than the Casey-Specter combination we have now.  Strangely for this right-wing conservative, the Damagogic party senator actually has views closer to my own than our Republican senator.

We have a Republican president who can't be counted on not to veto additional gun control.  Can we really count on the Republican party to protect our rights in its current state?  Are our rights safe in the long term if we keep sending the message to the Republicans that we will just keep voting for them no matter how bad they get just because the Demagogic party is worse?

At some point, the message needs to be sent loud and clear that being the lesser of two evils is not good enough, and if they want our support, they need to genuinely push our agenda and clean up the corruption.  Now was as good a time as any to send that message.
