Federal Premium HST
« on: October 03, 2013, 04:14:50 PM »
Yesterday, I went to the range to test fire the pup with VZ grips and, new to me, Federal Premium HST Personal Defense 124 gr. This round was introduced at the 2012 LAS Shot Show and has received some favorable reviews. It functioned flawlessly for two magazines and was very accurate with acceptable recoil. Someone on this forum wisely suggested that one should only carry ammo of the same box and lot number that was tested at the range. Although I have been a Gold Dot fan for years I was looking for a readily available alternative to the GD. The following ad is a brief description from Gander Mountain. This excellent ammo can be purchased cheaper than is shown here.

Tracker:

Thank you for posting that range report.  I had seen reports of the 124-gr. Federal Premium HST Personal Defense round but had not tried it myself or seen any other report on its functionality in the R9.  I'm adding it to my inventory.

I have a box of 147gr HST which I haven't tested yet.

I bought Winchester Ranger T, Remington Golden Sabre, and Federal HST - hoping that my R9 would like the Ranger T.

It turned out my R9 functions well with the 147gr Ranger T so I never got around to testing the HST.

There is an excellent article in the January "American Rifleman" magazine comparing and contrasting HST and Guard Dog in great detail.

At one point Guard Dog came in a heavier bullet weight - I can't remember if it was 124gr - or around there, and it wasn't so bad as far as terminal ballistics.  But the 105gr Guard Dog basically performs like a 380 AUTO.  9"-10" of penetration in bare gel. 8"-9" through 4x denim.

If I was happy with that kind of performance I'd probably be carrying a Kahr P380 or other similar  small / light weight 380 pistol.

I agree and only mentioned the article because it included the Guard Dog for the contrasting comparison. The HST is my only interest between the two of them.
