Title: Meco Elephant R9, WOW!
Post by: ccoorreeyy on March 25, 2010, 07:55:21 PM
I ordered a Elephant Seecamp holster from Robert a bit ago and it came in the mail today!  It is SO nice!  Robert emailed me a couple pics of a R9 holster he did out of the same hide and I thought I would post them here since he still has not figured out how to post pictures on this forum.

Here is his brown elephant R9 front and back.

Just to showoff (  ;D ) his work here are a couple pics of the one I got in the mail today.  If you want a TOP OF THE LINE rig for your R9 (or other pocket pistol) give Robert a try, you won't be sorry!!!!

ps.  sorry if this sounds like a commercial but i'm just THAT happy with my holster.

Corey, I saw your post with the pictures and loved them!   I called Robert and asked him to make one for my R9. He said he would be happy to. About 8-10 weeks he said. He always says that but It's never taken more than 5 weeks. Anyway, about 10 minutes later he calls me back and said that he would send me the one in the pictures. He'd made that one for himself but changed his mind and decided on sharkskin instead, and would send me the elephant skin one.  He's going to get it in the mail today. Waiting has never been my strong suit, so this works great.  Damn!, is this a score or what?!!!  Now to go tug on the mailman's sleeve til it gets here.   Gene

My goal is to get seven of Robert's exotic skin holsters, so I can put the Pup in a different one every day. Oh Gawd!, I don't know if I'm joking or not. To paraphrase Will Rogers, I never met a Meco holster I didn't like.      Gene

Found an elephant in my mail box a few minutes ago and it's BEAUTIFUL!!!. When I first saw the pictures Corey posted I thought "that can't possibly look that good". I was right, it looks much better! The color is just about the same as the Seecamp holster in Corey's picture, and just as lovely! Guess I'll go look at the holsters again.      Gene

Gene.  That is fast; three days.  I know you're pleased as punch.  Now, with the caiman, you're on your way to a different exotic carry holster every day.    :)

This would probably be really funny if it weren't so stupid. I was talking to Robert about the elephant skin holster I was ordering. He told me that very soon after Corey first posted the elephant pictures he got a call from some jerk ranting about killing elephants and giving him s*** about using the skin for making holsters. I can't imagine some dickhead like that accessing our forum.    Gene

Very nice.Could you tell me about each holster and each pistol.
I know the R9, but it looks like a Robar version with exception of the grips, the frame looks to be a light color.
Is the 1911 a Kimber? What was done to it?

The holsters look as though they would function well.
The holster in the middle, the Ostrich does look like a Graham, but because I am not sure, I am asking.

Gene:

They can show up anywhere. Back in my Army days, we had an expression for jerks like that:  "#%*@ 'em all but nine -- six for pallbearers, two for road guards, and one to count cadence."

By the way, those are great looking holsters, all!

The first holster is a Rafter S Leather OWB
The middle one is a Ron Graham
The bottom holster was made by Eugene Oppe
The 1911 is a Kimber Ultra CDP II, with Esmarelda grips, Wilson Combat two piece MSH/Magwell.
The R9 was sent to Robar and the entire gun and internals were finished with there NP3 coating, the grips are Rohrbaugh CFs, I got them off a older R9 and then sold the gun to my Son-inlaw.

How long did Robar have your R9?

I think it was about four weeks, and I believe that is there current turn around time.

In the interest of "putting my money where my mouth is,"and to show support for Robert and the other holster makers whose excellent work is pictured above, I'm posting this photograph of my R9 with its black CFs in my own elephant-hide holster.

The man whose name appears in the maker's mark on the back of this holster has passed away, but he was a legendary artist in gunleather. I'll withhold his name to prevent any harassment of his heirs by some self-appointed "Holster Material Police" who may be lurking around the fringes of the Forum.

Some of these "Holster Material Police" need to read the strict permit requirements of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

I do like the Kershaw "Leek".  These have the Safe Speed, which is spring assist.  Amazing.  Acts like an automatic knife.

This from the Kershaw website:

Is a SpeedSafe® knife a switchblade?

NO! There are many unique features of SpeedSafe® knives that make them quite different than knives that are considered switchblades. Unlike a switchblade, SpeedSafe® blades DO NOT deploy with the push of a button in the handle or by gravity alone. Instead, the user must manually overcome the torsion bar's resistance—using the thumb stud or protrusion on the blade itself—in order to engage the SpeedSafe® system. Because the user must manually overcome the torsion bar's resistance, SpeedSafe® knives fall fully outside the Federal definition of a switchblade. However, due to the complexity and constantly changing nature of these laws and regulations, it is impossible for Kershaw Knives to be aware of every restriction in every location in which our knives are sold or carried. It is the responsibility of the buyer to investigate and comply with the laws and regulations that apply in his or her specific area.

I don't think I said anything about a switchblade, Richard.  I said acts like an automatic knife.  Mine has a push at the top of the handle opposite the blade (Kershaw calls it a protrusion on the blade itself) and you just push that with your index finger and the blade flies out with lightning speed.  They also have a thumb push as well, which only requires a gentle nudge and it flies out the same.

If I pull mine out of my pocket, and push the index finger push, which only requires slight pressure, the blade flies out and you would think it was automatic.  The finger push requires the same pressure as the button on a switchblade.  I do have some switchblades and these are just as fast.

In fact, some of the reviews I read before purchasing, was exactly what some others had said.  The Kershaw safespeed acts like an automatic knife.

Some thoughts from a fully satisfied Kershaw Safespeed owner.

KJ:

I know you didn't. It's just the Second Amendment lawyer in me, which I hope you will forgive.  Some juriisdictions equate the terms "automatic" and "assisted opening" with the term "switchblade." The American Knife & Tool Institute works tirelessly to educate the public and the federal government and state legislatures on the difference. I was just attempting to eliminate any confusion which someone new to the concept might have as to the SpeedSafe® system.

And by the way, that's a beautiful trio of "Leeks" you have there!

All forgiven, Richard.  I was trying to make it clear that the Kershaw acted like an automatic knife, not that it was one.  Glad you cleared that up.  Thanks!

And thanks for the comment on the trio!

This has become my favorite of all my holsters, and just about the only one I use. Robert, you did a helluva job when you made this one!    Thanks for changing your mind.           Gene
