Is it 'ok' to dry fire semi-auto's?

I have always thought it was not a good practice without snap caps, but I took a class locally and the instructor stated it was fine to do.  I tried researching this on the web and found very little.  What I did find said it was acceptable except for .22 rim fire cartridges.  Any comments?

It probably does no harm to dry fire most semi-automatic handguns.  However, I personally always use a snap cap.

My gunsmith told me it's not a problem to do it occasionally -- this may have been referring to my Kimber that he holding at the time, but I should used snap caps if I wanted to do it frequently -- such as when I was working on my trigger technique.
