Close Encounter with Air Force 1

I took a girl friend for a sight seeing flight along the beach this afternoon over to Destin and back to Pensacola.
 
On our return flight from Destin, we were at 800 feet flying along the beach just east of Hurlbert Field.  I was advised by Eglin Approach to switch radio frequencies to Hurlbert Field Tower in order to transition it's airspace.  I did so -- and shortly after making contact with Hurlbert Tower, I was informed that I had "traffic" (another airplane close by) at my 2 o'clock position (off of my right nose) and 5 miles away...a 747 "heavy".
 
I saw the other airplane's position on my new GPS screen in the cockpit that displays TIS (traffic information sservices) -- and quickly made visual contact with the aircraft in the distance.  I jokingly said to my friend over the intercom, "I wonder if that is Air Force 1?".
 
Since a 747 on approach to land is faster than I could ever hope to be at full power, I knew the airplane would pass across my nose, so I advised Hurlbert Tower that I had the traffic in sight, was already west of his runway, and would descend to 600 feet.  We watched as the 747 grew closer -- and began to pass in front of me.  To my amazement, I could clearly make out the unique paint scheme of none other -- than Air Force 1 !!
 
The attached image is the best I could do in a rush with my digital camera (something told me to take it along on the flight) at a distance of a mile or so.  He had lowered his landing gear and was preparing to make his turn to land on the northward runway that we had just passed.
 
Since we were even being allowed to fly in the area at all -- I knew that is really wasn't "Air Force 1" -- with President Bush on board -- as a no fly zone follows that airplane.  Upon arriving back home later, I saw that President Bush was in New Orleans this afternoon for a review of hurricane relief efforts.  Since his primary 747 never leaves the area while he is on the ground, my guess is that this was the other 747 used for Air Force 1 flights -- since two are in existance.  Maybe they stage the second airplane at an Air Force base close by when the first airplane is actually on an air Force 1 flight.  Since Keesler in Biloxi was severely damaged, Hurlbert Field is the next closest Air Force base along the coast to the New Orleans area.
 
It was a treat to see the beautifully painted 747 fly across my track and turn for a landing -- definitely not something one sees everyday!

That's a wonderful story, flyandscuba.

I'm glad you shared it.  Great picture, too!

Somewhere today I read that President Bush arrived on an aircraft carrier.   Maybe it was a misunderstanding.

Yep, it looks like he is sleeping over on the Iwo Jima...

I guess that might have been the 747 he used -- after it dropped him off in the New Orleans area.

I'm glad your plan came together!   ;)

As I reread your original post and noted your comment about the speed of 747s on approach being greater than that of your plane at full speed, I was reminded of a time back in the 1970's when I first took up recreational flying out of Godfrey Field in Leesburg, Virginia.  My flight instructor, who became a good friend of mine even though he was slightly malicious by nature, told me I needed to get some solo experience landing at a controlled field.  He said he had selected Dulles International Airport as my "controlled field."  

I fired up the trusty Cessna 150 Aerobat, took off from Godfrey Field, turned on the transponder, called up Dulles down the road, identified myself, and announced my intentions.  After informing me that I would be landing behind one "heavy" and ahead of another, Dulles control gave me my instructions.  I complied and puttered off to get in line.  

When my time came to turn off of the base leg and onto final, I remember being amazed at how wide the Dulles runway appeared to be.  Anyway, I set up my best approach, dropped flaps, throttled back, and lined up on the center of that massive runway.  About halfway through my final approach, the radio crackled into life and this dry voice came over the air saying:  "Dulles, this is United ###.  Would you ask the pilot of that Cessna to hurry it up?  We've got this 747 doing S-turns out here waiting for him to get that kite on the ground!"

I was told later that my flight instructor (bless his black heart) had alerted everyone in the building back at Godfrey Field as to where he had sent me and that they were all gathered around the radio to enjoy the show.  :-[

Fly - astonishing pic considering - and Richard, one of your (I suspect many) unusual experiences!

I flew this morning - but my feet were still on the ground!

My only encounter with Air Force-1 nearly got me thrown in the brig.  I was working for a company that did leak detection on underground storage tanks.  The company had a contract with the air force and I was at Andrews to test all the USTs including the ones for Air Force-1.  Well, when I was escorted into the area with the tanks nobody told me that the cap had a seal on it and not to touch it until it was too late.  Luckily for me there was an officer there who vouched for me that I didn't actually open the fill port all the way, but just turned the cap enough to break the seal.  I didn't realize until much later that that guy saved my butt from some serious hassle to say the least.
