To HOOK or NOT ?
« on: March 28, 2011, 07:09:32 PM »
I have a question for Daily Carriers of the R9.

While I do own at least 4 of Johns mag extensions, only 1 or 2 installed, I have yet to practice with them.
And I DO KNOW how much better control they offer.
But at the same time, I have no trouble as it is.

I am a believer in "Train with what and how you carry".

Trying to be a much as a minimalist as posible, I just can't bring myself to carrying the extended mags.  I want the best concealment possible.

So here's the question - Who actually carries the extended mags?
And
Do you have one/it in the gun?

And/Or just use it as a spare?

Also, how are your carrying? - pocket; front or back, or belt holster.

I fiqure as many of these that John sells, people must be using them daily.

I want to have an open mind, I do respect the members here and their opinions.

Thanks

Starting with Bryce's mag extensions and continuing with John's  I carry them in the right front pocket with a spare mag in the left. I always practice with and carry the hooked version in the gun's magazine but have the flat one in the spare mag. I consider these mag extensions essential in the R9 because of the greatly improved grip control.

Tracker -  thank you.

You do not find that extension causes any printing?

That is my fear, since the Butt of any gun is usually the problem in printing.

If it does print I feel the advantages of enhanced tactile control far outweigh that consideration. My opinion is that the print issue is only a concern to the carrier because nobody pays much attention to other people on a daily basis, much less what is in their pocket.

I have five straight extensions.

I always practice with the extension on all the mags I use.

I always carry what I practice with. I carry in the front pocket with the straight mag. I have found the extension does not print any more than a gun without an extension. My spare mag has an extension as well. It comes down to the right pocket holster for you. I have selected two custom Meco holsters that I cannot live without.

I figure there is no disadvantage to carrying with the extension! You get extra grip and control without extra printing. It's a win win situation. ;D

I wish I could find the post but MrsFosforos, who hasn't been here lately, made some excellent detailed observations regarding the advantages of a mag extension. Maybe some forum sleuth can locate it because it is worth another look.

I carry with a hooked extension, right front pocket, in one of a couple of different Ron Graham holsters or on occasion in my Rafter S OWB. Any type of printing done by an extension would look more like something other than a gun.
In a world of I pods, pocket GPS and cell phones and all the other gadgetry people carry in there pockets today, one would need to be extremely observant to know you had a gun in your pocket. ;D

And if they were that observant you would probably be toast anyway.

I carry my R9S IWB with the hooked extension. It only imprints into my gut.  You can't even see it with a T-Shirt on.
