Title: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: Jack_Bauer on July 15, 2009, 12:47:27 AM
I have two Glock 19s and one Glock 17. My contractor wants to buy a G19. I have these for the Oh $#!t scenario (ie. post hurricane in New Orleans, or other event) as secondary weapons to an AR. I usually carry a G19 if not a Kimber Ultra RCP for CCW.

I really want a Walther PPS. Now I'm thinking on getting rid of one of the G19s (the one with Meprolights, I hate Meprolight; the other has Trijicons).

Any thoughts? I think the G19 is the perfect all around handgun if you could only have one. I have two because they're cheap, they work and if one gets messed up or lost I really won't care. I could always stash one in the truck. But then I also have the G17 which while a tad bit larger fits somewhat the same bill.

Just need some like minded individuals to bounce this idea off of.

Thanks

Jack,

Yes, keep the Glocks and forget the Walther PPS. Although I love
the Walthers of old I would not spend one dime on anything that
is presently manufactured by Smith and Wesson.

The quality of a new S&W doesn't even compare to the Glock. This is
not just my opinion but of a master gunsmith who has worked on all of
them.

Post by: Jack_Bauer on July 15, 2009, 01:24:45 AM
I agree with you on Smith. The PPS is made in Germany so I'm thinking not by Smith. I would think if Smith made them there would be a version with S&W on the slide.

I need it to fill a niche of a thin "regular" sized handgun. I'm doing photography now and my set up doesn't allow for IWB carry. While I have an R9S there are times and places where I'd feel more comfortable having a regular sized gun with me.

If it is made in Germany, it is probably all right, especially
with a n 8 round magazine How does this compare to a Spring-
field XD compact?

STRONGLY agree with tracker. I love old Walthers and one of my favorite guns is an all German, pre-Interarms PPK, circa 1966.

James Bond novels started my interest in guns when I was a kid. .380 is not my carry choice but I love the gun.

To tracker's point, new stuff, (since S&W takeover0, is made like a word that rhymes with mitt.

Glocks are forever ugly but willl never fail you.

You shouldn't like the Glock's look as they are ugly. They are, however, magnificently engineeered.

Excellent engineering can result in a quality product.  I have considered a Glock, but just can't get past the look.

Put a paper bag over the Glock's head and buy one.

Then put the bag over your own head and don't buy the Glock.

If you sell the G19 replace it with a G26 but not the Walther IMO. ::)

Newt:

I never thought I would say this, being a hard-core 1911 type, but I've been considering a Glock 26 as what might be termed "a knock-around truck gun" because of it's ammo compatibility with my R9 (which I would never allow to be knocked around in the console of a truck). I've never shot the G26. Since you obviously like the model, I would appreciate having your observations about it.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)

I once owned the Glock 27 which is the .40 S&W model. I have similar feelings against Glocks expressed by others in this forum.

I have to say that the gun performed well and I can only repeat what I have stated consistently: Glocks are ugly but well engineered.

The Glock 36 (single stack compact .45ACP) is the one I have kept. Great gun to shoot in a great caliber. However, any comparison of a Glock to a 1911 is no contest. John Browning's immortal design is going to win 10 times out of 10.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: tracker on July 16, 2009, 02:37:33 PM
Richard,

I own a 26 and wholeheartedly recommend it; one good thing about
it is that you could carry a 15 or 17 round spare magazine and use
it as a backup in the 26.

The only thing I don't care for in the Glocks are the cheap factory
sights but would be ok for your truck carry. The factory night sites
seem to be acceptable.

ACP & Tracker:

Thank you, gentlemen. That about seals it for me. I think I'll go get me a "truck gun."  (I may have to take a good deal of ribbing from some of my friends around here who have had to put up with my "1911 evangelism" over the years, but if it gets too bad I know where most of them have "tied their goats."   ;) )

Never let a Jury hear you Say that a Pistol or Revolver is Pretty, may cause you problems down the road?

Glocks may be Ugly as Some say, but let me see you take a so called pretty gun throw it in the mud leave it for a couple of days and then continue shooting.

Just a thought, my 2 %.

Thanks ::)
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: ACP on July 16, 2009, 05:23:32 PM
Ratzo makes a good point about saying a gun is pretty. In fact, 1911 has lost favor with LEOs and citizens because lawyers have (successfully) argued to jurors that "cock and lock" feature of the 1911 shows intent; this despite the fact that the perpetrator initiates the event.

That is why so many LEOs use Glocks and Sigs, particularly DAO.

As to Ratzo's comment regarding Glock reliability, it is true. Magnificent engineering. Ugly gun.

I have a G-19 sold my G-26 to my son-inlaw and traded my
G-36 for a Colt New Agent (that I found out today needs to go back to Colt for some recall work :() I also had a Walther PPS that I sold to buy my R9s, it was one of the first 100 after the 1000 First Editions. It was a fine carry gun very slim
shot well, never had a problem. With the first ones some people had issues, they seem to have all that worked out now.
If you need something that is easy to CC and is a quality product you won't go wrong with the PPS, it can also be had in .40S&W.

I have and have had a bunch of Glocks.  Fun to work on, cheep to modify, and lots of buyers when you want to sell one.

I even have a Glock 22 "race gun" that you might think is pretty.

My favorite is a my Glock 32c which is a 357 sig compensated from Glock. This is my truck gun. XS Big Dot night sights work great for my eyes.

If you like your 1911 buy a "drop in" Bar Sto barrel  for around $200 and your Glock will now shoot groups just as well.

Rocket trigers are great if you like fiddling and have a few hours.  Not for carry though, you need a New Yourk trigger for that.

Post by: ACP on July 28, 2009, 07:24:21 PM
Just remembered: I owned a Glock 29 prior to my Glock 36. 10MM. Now, that was recoil!

.45ACP is preferable to 10MM in my view. Gets the job done, ammo is more available and does not punish your hand.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: Dino on July 29, 2009, 09:32:59 AM
Everyone needs to own a 10mm just once in there lifetime.  It is a good back up gun for hunting in the subcompact as it is light and powerful.

I love my 45's, but the 357 sig has velocity that not much can mach. IMO
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: ACP on July 29, 2009, 01:52:30 PM
Dino

I am not a hunter but the 10MM would certainly be a good contender as backup for dangerous game. (Something above red squirrel, although those creatures continue to plaque my birdfeeder).

I have a Sig P239 with two barrels. The .40 S&W barrel is unused, whereas the .357 Sig barrel has many rounds through it and I concur with your faith in the cartridge.

I Love Sigs also just playing with my P250 now.  Not the same quality as your P239 but I like playing with my guns and you sure can do that with the 250.

In 9mm compact now but just ordered set up for the 40 subcompact.

The 250 is an ingenious gun design in which you can create multiple formats. However, I am prejudiced toward metal guns.

Great cartridge. Look at the specs on the 250. If they offer weight and dimensions similar to P239, you are good to go.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)

Tracker and ACP.  Your knowledge is appreciated.  ACP, I do like the P239 as well, but thought I would go with the smaller size.  It looks like a six to eight week wait on the P250 while the P239 is in stock.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: tracker on July 31, 2009, 10:43:54 PM
I would go with the 239; that is about as low as I would go for
the .357 Sig except for the Glock 32, which is about like the 239
in size. I agree with ACP on the superb ballistics of the .357 Sig
and have really enjoyed shooting it in a Glock 22 and a Sig 229.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: kjtrains on July 31, 2009, 11:05:22 PM
The P250 is 4.6 ozs. lighter, unloaded, than the P239 but holds 3 more rds.  Barrel length is the same.  I like the P250 in that you can change calibers, 9mm, .40, and .45 from the Sig.357.

record, though.

How would a Glock 33 subcompact compare in quality to a Sig P239 in the caliber of Sig. 357?
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)

Quite superbly. I was just looking at a 32 today and it is very
close in size to the 239. Dollar for dollar you just can't beat a
Glock for quality, reliability, and parts availability, imo.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: ACP on August 01, 2009, 06:41:15 PM
First, I am really surprised at the size of the 250 compact. Is that new or have I just not seen it in the smaller configuration?

Sorry to read tracker's comments about recent Sig quality. I have nothing to go on but I have great respect for his views.

I give a grudging nod to Glock as superior. I do so because I have already admitted my prejudice toward metal guns. I also like exposed hammers, even when they are bobbed, as in R9.

Glock engineering, accuracy, durability is unbeatable. Yes, I prefer pretty guns, but Glock will never fail you when you need it.

I think the Sig. 250 Sub Compact is new, but don't know how new.

I'm really a quality fanatic, and that's why I got the R9s.  It looks like the Glock has the edge.  I  want a subcompact in Sig.357 caliber and it looks like this will fill the bill.

Thanks Tracker and ACP for your input.  It's amazing, when you get one gun, you want another, then another, and it keeps on going from there.  It does make life interesting.

You are making an excellent choice in caliber and manufacturer.
I would appreciate your opinion on the sensed recoil of that gun.
It would appear to be rather brisk but we all have different
tolerance levels.

Personally, i enjoy something with some punch to it.

I do to.  I like shooting my Ruger Alasken .454, Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Mag, Freedom Arms .454, and not yet fired the S&W .500 Mag (just haven't had the chance yet on this one.)

Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: kjtrains on August 01, 2009, 11:11:34 PM
The Ruger 44 Mag is the most uncomfortable one to shoot, due to the wood grips, but not unbearable.  I shoot all of them with one hand.  The Freedom Arms .454 did cause a cut between my thumb and index finger, but I didn't notice that until the 49th rd.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: ACP on August 02, 2009, 07:27:39 AM
I have never owned a 454 Casull, 460 S&W or 500 but I am glad they make them. I have shot them and punishment is good if you do not make it a habit.

I concur with tracker's comments about "liking punch" when I shoot but prefer the R9 and .357 Sig compact to major ordinance referenced above.

I've just read 5 reviews on the Glock 33 from those who have purchased it.  All five gave it a 5 star rating with positive remarks and one guy said he liked it so well he has bought 3.  One bought an Olive Drab color.  I might like that.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)

Concur with olive drab frame. I do not like two tone guns (I am being consistent here) but Anything to brake up the monotony of black, black, black and black; all you normally get with a Glock. You can't put wood grips on a Glock like you can a Sig.

I had interest in the Glock 33 because I love the caliber. They are not common according to those I contacted. What dissuaded me from getting one was the double stack configuration. I am a thin guy and don't shoot well with double stack guns. I will stick to my single stack Glock 36 in .45ACP.

If they would make a single stack .357 Sig compact I would be there in a flash. Great cartridge.
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)

I have a Glock 32c and a P250, the Glock is a better built gun and has a better trigger.  I put XS big dot sights on and that is all the gun needed.

The P250 compact has a grip that feels bigger than the Glock.

Recoil out of the 357 is about the same as any 40 cal I have shot.  My gun is compensated and that might make it feel a little softer than most.

I love the 357 sig round, nothing like it.

Don't have an XDM, but was looking at that some time ago.  Always have been impressed with the Glock's quality, just not their appearance.  I'm going to go with the quality and get over the look.  I also wanted a sub compact in 357 Sig.

My FFL has found a Glock 33 in Olive Drab, but since we are going to Ga. tomorrow, it will two weeks before I can get it.  He gets it in two days.  My timing, not good.

Another great choice, I have one of the first XD's in 45ACP and love it also.

The Springfield is more accurate than my Glock 17, 22 and 32c.

The 45 is a big gun with a big grip but I see the new XDM's have an adjustable back strap that may make a big differance.

I just noticed that GunBroker.com currently has an auction in progress for a Matt Del Fatti Glock 19 23 32 Holster Black LP-HTL. I have no connection to or knowledge of the seller other than to note that it appears he has been a member of GunBroker.com since 08/21/2005 with an A+ feedback rating from over 1,000 transactions. As of now, the auction has 5 days and 22 hours remaining, and this thread seemed to be an appropriate place to mention it. Given Matt's current backlog of orders, his holsters are becoming increasingly hard to find.

Nice holster. Leather is good for a Glock and so much nicer than those impersonal (Kydex?) ones.

I would lead off with $100.00 because there are no bids and 5 days to go. Then you can play as necessary.

However, to Richard's point, the "buy now" feature does have a sudden death element. So, how badly do you want it?
Title: Re: Need opinions (Glock 19 sale?)
Post by: Dino on August 04, 2009, 02:28:30 PM
Thanks ACP, I don't have to have it, truth is I don't even need it. But I don't have Del Fatti and I sure do have a few Glocks that will fit in it.

Hate to say it, I'm one of those Kydex guys.  They work fine at the range and I don't normally carry my Glocks.

But with a Del Fatti rig it might be something I'll try from time to time.

Don't want it that bad.

Maybe I should buy it for my wife, our 32nd anniversary is the 20th of this month?

Isn't the 32nd anniversary leather?

As I think I commented in another thread, there are few things easier in life than giving advice to another man on how he should spend his money. However, if I owned one of the Glocks for which it was made I think I would grab that holster at the "Buy-It-Now" price before someone else gets it. Last year I paid a $200.00 BIN price for this Del Fatti ISP-4 holster for my HK P7 and am glad I did.

Dino,

Incorrect. The 32nd anniversary gift is a Glock pistol. However, since you are already there, why not buy the holster?

You don't have to tell me about want vs. need because I know. I busted yankee, on this forum, about his "honey elephant, peanut alligator" holster from Rafter S for his R9. Then, after I looked at the holster on the website, I ordered one myself.

I think it is a little weird to have "no reserve" and "buy now" the same price. However, this maker has a following and this makes your decision easier.

Dino.  Sorry I couldn't answer your post sooner as we just got to Ga. from NC.

I'm not interested in the holster so if you want it go for it.  Seems like a nice one.

And thanks Richard for the find.  Great looking holster.
