Hard Chrome vs NP3 finish
« on: April 28, 2011, 10:57:13 PM »
Does anyone have two R9s one with  the hard chrome finish and one with the NP3 finish.

I am looking for a comparison between the two.

Lubrication requirements
Cleaning after firing
Cleaning after pocket carry
Holster wear
What one holds up better over time

I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

I have two guns that are described as so, but not R9s.

One is a hard chromed race gun for IPSC used hard years ago.

It shows no wear what so ever. And talk about potential holster wear!  There were thousands of draws!  However, the internals are not HC.  The external is easily cleaned.  The internals are cleaned like anything else, but worse, due to the number of rounds and hard use.

Two other guns are carry guns; an NP3 HK P7 M8,  and a custom 1911 Scott McDougal and Associates Officers model with NP3 lower and internals and Rogaurd upper.
These clean up easier than my all my other guns for sure.
After three years of daily carry for the 1911, no signs of leather holster wear.
The HK is carried little.  I just "feel" a lot more comfortable in my shoes with a 45.  I know KJ understands.  ;D

Hope this helps

Thank you Rienz. I have a custom Cogan R9 and like it. I just sent it to Robar to have the internals NP3 coated. I was wondering how the exerior finish held up in comparison?

Z - when you say Bob Cogan Custom, I assume it has been hard chromed since that is his signature here on this forum; even though he does other finishes as well.

If so, that sure sounds like a winner, HC on the outside and NP3 on the inside.

Don't see any wear in the future there.

Good Luck!

Z - just saw your Cogan on another post.  Sure is a beauty!

I would not be surprised if the HC lasted a lifetime.

That is what I am hoping for!

Yes Bob applied the hard chrome finish, Matt rounds and brushed flats.
