A very nice article, thanks for posting the link! I bet it gets
many thinking.....what would I do?

I had noticed many years ago while watching the TV Show
"Cops" that the "perp" rarely obeys the verbal commands of
the Police Officer(s) on the scene. Their usually has to be something
with the verbal commands that convinces the perp to obey.
Being sprayed with mace or hit with a billy club or being bitten
by an attack dog or being physically forced to comply by the Police
Officer(s) on the scene.

So I've thought for a long time, what would I do if someone
threatening me refused to obey my commands. The nice thing
about now living in a State with a "Shoot the Burglar Law" is you
don't need to say a word. If ANYONE has for example, brocken
into your home, your NOT obligated to say a word before you
shoot them to death and drag their body outside so they get
more blood outside rather than in.

Sounds cold as hell doesn't it? I think the reason why the law is
written that way is to make it much harder for the Home Owner
to be successfully sued. Please understand, I'm NOT stating that
that is what I would do..........but its close.

So, what would "I" do if I found myself in a situation where the "perp"
didn't obey my commands? Well, in my case, this non-Police Officer
can't legally do much other than continue to issue commands until
someone arrives who can do more. If their in my Home, well,
I think you have a good idea.

If you consider it 'lucky',I have had it happen MANY times as an LEO and as a citizen after retiring and as off duty LEO too.

I got to train at the academy [ as a teacher ] and had to show and explain THE answers to rookies as well as duty officers.

The answer I came up with is called IAD [ immediate action drill ] which is simply DO SOMETING DIFFERENTLY than you have already done.

If your in the open = GET TO REAL COVER,yes even if you have to retreat.

Cover stops bullets and that perp might be armed even if you have not seen a weapon.

Expect to hear "Go ahead and shoot" and or Shove that gun ----------- ".

You might be tempted to put 'hands on' at that point,especially IF you have some training.

IF your tempted to do so,try to remember the funny movie scene where the bad guy [ or good guy ] says "put down your gun and we will duke it out like men".

Then when one puts his gun down = the other shoots LOTS of holes in the dumb ass that actually did lay down his gun.

Do not keep saying "drop your gun" since its simple to see that if they are not about to do so,saying is putting in a BAD place by being too busy TALKING.

Either be shooting,moving,or loading = or all of them if your good at it.

Clint Smith has a few of these as his rules for a gun fight,made a great deal of sense to me and I had been following his 'rules' a long time ago.

Have a PLAN,then at least 2 more plans as the first 1 or even the first 2 might go to hell in a handbasket.

Hope you train till you fail,then try harder and then you will learn.

Doing the same thing over and over is mental ilness.Especially if you have an expectation of a different outcome.

train to fail,then learn and do it better.

Personally, I think that if a criminal is not obeying a private citizen w. a gun, he's already decided that he wants to obtain his objective more than he doesn't want to be shot. 

I could see why they might act differently about cops having a weapon drawn. 

I think that story about "lets stand up and finish it like men" is based on one of the old TX lawmen (Tom Threepersons or Fitz, maybe) stories about him, and a... rumrunner maybe?... both wounded in some brush, and the lawmen suggested that we "both need a doctor, so we should stand up and finish this like men, so that one of us can get help" and closed with "The dumb SOB stood up."
