Title: First Time To The Range
Post by: renrew on March 24, 2013, 06:01:29 PM
I just recently bought the R9 Tribute and have not fired it until today as I was waiting for the Gold Dot 124 grain ammo I bought.  I got to the range and put 30 rounds or 6 mags of Gold Dot's through the gun without any trace of a problem.  I was pleasantly surprised to see the gun was accurate, reliable, and not hard to shoot.

Thank you to all the members for all the great insightful info on this forum.  I am please with this wonderful little gun.

Congratulations on the R9 Tribute, and thank you for that range report. You have a real masterpiece there that should serve you well for many years to come.

Richard,
I am cleaning the gun and read an old post about lubrication.  Do you use lube over oil for the R9?

I picked up some Super Lube.  In the past I have just used oil on my Sig's.

Thanks,
W-

I just read they no longer recommend lube.  I just used Hoppe's 9 and trust that is o.k.

Very impressed with this fine firearm!

Just continue what you have been doing with your Sigs. The factory no longer recommends Super Lube synthetic grease or any other grease. There are many excellent gun oil lubricants available now.

What Tracker said.

I now use Frog Lube CLP oil, having switched from Ballistol due to my wife's aversion to the latter's odor. ("The things we do for love.")

Hi,

One quick question.

Why is Super Lube synthetic grease no longer recommended?  Until recently I thought it was preferred over oil on this fine guns.

Thanks

I think because Eric Rohrbaugh put these pictures out and I cannot believe someone would put this much grease on a pistol.  Super lube is a good product and I use it on many pistols including my Rohrbaugh but anyone who globs this much grease on any firearm is asking for trouble, especially a small alloy frame pistol like the R9.  It will attract dirt like flypaper.

It is my understanding, subject to correction, that in addition to the tendency of all grease to attract "pocket dreck," the change in recommendation was also made because Super Lube was found to become viscous (i.e.,"tacky") in cold tempertures, such as when the pistol had to be left locked in an automobile for an extended period in winter months.

The R9 was a new design introduced in 2002 and released to the public in 2004. As experience with the pistol grew, recommendations for its maintenance were adapted accordingly.

As MRC notes, Super Lube is an excellent product. I used to apply it to the wear points of my own R9 with each cleaning, and I still use it on some of my firearms that have more generous tolerances than the R9. For the R9, however, I now simply use the Frog Lube CLP mentioned above.

[Edit: Corrected typo.]

Once my Stealth was "seasoned" with Frog Lube it proved to be very easy to clean, and I can do it without wearing gloves. Great lubricant with no smell. The gun feels dry and I don't worry about oil or grease on my clothing. Congrats.  ;)

FrogLube rocks:

"For those of you who aren’t aware, FrogLube is a plant-based, non-toxic, non-petroleum, non-flammable, biodegradable, American made cleaning, lubricating, and protecting product for firearms. Oh, and it’s also USDA Certified Biobased, and FDA certified food grade."

Not recommended for a postprandial libation, however.

I have had great luck with EEZOX as recommended by L. Seecamp for his pistols...it worked so well on my LWS .32 that I now use it on the R9 with excellent results...only problem is that you should leave the pistol disassembled overnight to let the EEZOX dry, and some don't like the sweet smell.

Frog lube sounds like the way to go...I'll round some up and try it when the EEZOX is gone.

It's so good that I'm considering its functionality as an aftershave lotion.    ;)

No doubt that FrogLube would work better as an aftershave lotion than my aftershave lotion functioned as a shoe shine enhancement at OCS in Newport one bright early morning. During morning inspection my company commander strongly suggested that I use the Mennen on my face and stay with Kiwi for the shoes. I think FrogLube would have been better than the Mennen that produced a shine like a Baby Ruth bar. Sorry for the thread drift.

Ahhh . . . OCS.  That's where I first learned to love the smell of Brasso in the morning. But I too digress.   8)

It seems that the OP, renrew, began this thread by praising his Tribute and Gold Dot ammo as a superb combination of two quality products working together as a system. One of the many good things about this forum is that most of us are on a quest for the best, whether it is the pup, ammo, holster, accessories, tools, lubricant, or just good information. In that regard there is no thread drift when we are all seeking the best and in a very collegial environment.

You guys are great... ;), but seriously, for a firearm with the close tolerances of the R9, Frog Lube rocks. Once "seasoned", the Frog Lube works as the operating/firing temperature rises. I use it on all my firearms with great results. Just be sure to have a really good hair dryer and get the parts really hot before applying. Be sure all the surfaces are very clean. Simple Green works great. Doc  :)

Bought some Frog Lube today.  I appreciate the advice from you guys that have been around for awhile.

Great advice on the heat treatment. On another similar product I preheated the oven to 100 degrees, pulled the grips and magazine on a Browning HP and placed the frame and slide into the oven for 20-30 minutes before applying the product. This should work very well with FrogLube, as well.

Hey renrew. Check out various youtube vids about application, such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlMikz8Nc8A ;)

Awesome Docboss thanks!  I would have not known about heating the gun first.  I just ordered the liquid and not the paste.

Looks like a great product.  I take it this is all you use with no oil on top?

From what I can see this product works best once the gun has been fired a bit.  Make one wonder about the first few rounds fired from the gun.

I am guessing the surface is still slippery prior to the gun getting hot from firing?

I don't think firing the gun before Frog Lube makes any difference. The more you fire it, the harder it is to clean it prior to "seasoning". Just get it clean and do it. The firearm will not be slick at all! Once you have heated the gun parts (almost too hot to hold), one at a time, and applied the Frog Lube, let them sit for an hour to cool. Supposedly the heating opens up the pores, then they close as the metal cools. (I am not sure I "buy" that explaination). After an hour, take a good microfiber cloth and thorougly wipe off the parts. You will be surprised at how dry they are even before you wipe them down. Once reassembled, the gun will feel dry. I do not treat the grips with Frog Lube but everything else. A really good hair dryer works wonders at directing the heat to the internals of the frame. I do not apply any more Frog Lube to the firearm. Try this vid. This guy is better than the other one I suggested.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-depzYZC8w  ;)

That is an excellent video, well worth the 20 minutes required to watch it. Thank you for posting it to the Forum.

I have previously posted on my own "FrogLube epiphany." It was interesting to see that the Navy Captain in the video had also progressed, as I had done, from Ballistol to FrogLube. He mentioned the "unpleasant" odor of Ballistol. I had become unaware of Ballistol's odor, but my wife had not.  She is a lovely and tolerant little woman but, being the retired judge that she is, she will let you know what she thinks. As for FrogLube, she says she actually likes its odor.  ("Happy wife, happy life."   8) )

To these remarks I would add only that after application of FrogLube, I apply a coating of Renaissance Wax to the outside of my firearms.  Whenever someone asks me why I use Renaissance Wax on my guns my reply is always something to the effect that, "I only use it on the ones I want to keep." (There is one caveat to my having brought Renaissance Wax into the home -- my wife is always "borrowing" it to use on her antique furniture.)

Yes, it is a good vid. All R9 owners should view it. This guy has some interesting stuff about backround checks. Renaissance Wax is a great product. I hope it will prevent surface wear caused by my Galco holster. I really like the Stealth, but the finish seems a little thin. You folks are great. Love my Pup. Wearing it feels more natural than a cellphone. Doc  8)
