Beautiful old elegant hotel.
Having a gun in your hand is much more effective than having the entire police department on the phone!

Yes, indeed; it was a welcome weekend respite for a lowly Officer Candidate Seaman Apprentice. They had live music entertainment in the lower level.

I was always jealous of you guys.  I went through Coast Guard OCS, which is located in Yorktown, VA.  Newport it is not.

Another favorite weekend hangout was The Mooring in town. That is one of the many pleasantries about Newport and Rhode Island: good things don't change very often.

I just checked and confirmed that The Mooring is still open.  Funny that I've hit that town so many times but never went there. 

One of the highlights back then was the hotel on Goat Island, which had a a penthouse bar with views of the a bay and the Newport waterfront.  Great place to try to impress a young lady.
