Title: stippling front strap
Post by: Aglifter on September 20, 2005, 04:03:13 PM
Anyone ever talk to the Rohrbaughs about having this done?  I assume there's some reason it's not done to the gun already... after all, these guys seem to be focused on quality, not cost control (which I heartily agree with.)

probably not done because it is an individual discretionary
item and ,as you suggested, extra cost.

If you had the front strap stippled, would the frame have to be refinished?

teddyd,

Welcome to the forum.  Glad you are here.

I don't know the answer to the question.  I'm a great believer in the abrasive tape.

Howdy, I am new to the forum with my R9S to arrive this Friday.  Has anyone heard of anyone having Robar NP3 on their pistol?

Hmm, since Robar is a different company...

Garish,

Welcome to the forum.  We are glad to meet you.

I haven't heard about anybody putting additional metal treatments on their R9S pistols.

I sent my Sig P239 to Tripp in Texas for hard chrome plating, etc., and was very satisfied.

Why bother and why pay Robar? I had a P-7 and a BHP
refinished by Virgil Tripp for specific reasons. If it ain't
broke-----------. With the tight tolerances I would feel
uncomfortable adding even a slight layer of refinishing.

I have had several pistols done by Robar.  I know their coating is very thin, not supposed to throw the pistol out of whack.  The natural lubrication provided by NP3 is a big plus in other pistols.  Rather than having tape on a $1K pistol I was thinking of stippling too and then refinish in NP3.  Guess I will see how the original shoots and how hard it is to keep a consistent hold onto the grip before doing anything.  From what I read here the Winchester 115 gr. silvertips and the Magsafe rounds are both pretty good.  How about CorBon, too much power for the pistol??  Thanks for the welcome.  I have read quite a bit already which has saved me time and $$.

My R9S was squirming in the hand so bad, at the moment of discharge, that it was causing severe pain to the hand and wrist.  It was pure torture to shoot three rounds.

In my specific case, I doubt that stippling would have helped, unless it was unusually rough.

Abrasive tape immediately cured the problem.  It was either use the tape, or sell the R9S.  Meanwhile, I know many people would not decorate an expensive pistol with tape.

For what it's worth, the tape looks like it "belongs".  In fact, it looks quite nice.

Would you be able to provide pictures?  If you have time at this busy time of year.

I'll post pictures when Im done, which will be sometime in the next five months. First my pistol will go to Ted Yost for his "sharkskin" stippling on the front and rear strap. Then it's off to be refinished entirely in NP3. I look to have this done by May.

I would really like to see the abrasive tape pictures too.  Too bad it will take so long to get the sharkskin stippling and then the NP3.  Good luck on your project.

This forum has given birth to a new tongue-twister:
"Robar your Rohrbaugh."

I'll try to post pictures of the tape.

Thank you Bill.  I will consider Robaring my Rohrbaugh after stippling my straps all to reduce wrenching recoil and master the mystifying  muzzle flip!!  Too many anxiety elevating alliterations!

Garish,

I'm sorry about the poor quality of this.  My closeup lens are misplaced.  I'll try to do it right another time, with a suitable background.

Thanks for the picture, it does look like it belongs there.  Where did you get the tape and how did you cut it.  I think it has adhesive already on it?  No need to retake the picture.  I can see what I wanted to see.  Thanks for sending it!  Gary...  Not Garish enough?

Steve gave the tape to me.

Here is his link which describes the tape.

I absolutely highly recommend it.

Ace hardware has some 1 inch tape made by 3M that
sells for 89 cents a foot. I like it a lot--comes in white
or black.

Tracker thx  - well looks like I'll try that tho annoyingly, my closest Ace is way further away than convenient.  I may even check out my local True Value first.
