Title: "One of a Kind" Rohrbaugh R-9S for Auction
Post by: DDGator on July 15, 2010, 04:00:15 PM
The Rohrbaugh Forum has the honor of announcing a true "one of a kind" Rohrbaugh Firearms collectable for auction.  This will be a rare opportunity for the most serious Rohrbaugh collectors.  :o

This is a “one off” Rohrbaugh R-9S construced from a variety of special parts.

The frame is serial number R4416, mated to a slide from the now discontinued “Special Forces” model.  The frame, magazine and ejector are all black coated with the famous Wilson “Armor Tuff” finish.

The barrel, plunger and trigger are NP3 coated.  The hammer, extractor and grip screws are high-polished by hand, like the Robar, or discontinued Stealth Elite Premium models.

The grips are very special too – they are the original R-9 Hogue grip prototypes produced by Neil and Pat Hogue.

This gun will be paired with another piece of Rohrbaugh history –a wood and glass presentation case that has been used at Rohrbaugh’s SHOT Show booth for the past three years.

The gun will be shipped with a letter of authenticity explaining the gun’s signficance that is signed by Karl and Eric.

Photos are available here:

(Due to internet restrictions where I am now, I could not imbed the pictures in this post, but I will fix that later.)

The proceeds from this sale are expected to go to a charity – but those details are still being worked out.  The exact rules and format for the auction are yet to be fully determined.  Unfortunately, donating funds like this to a charity, and using their name in a public auction, is a much harder process than you would likely believe.  Rohrbaugh hopes to get the details worked out next week, but wanted to satisfy some of the pent up curiosity by allowing me to post these details.

Feel free to comment here on this thread.  Thanks for everyone's patience.

Man...I'm glad I wasn't the one to say that first...!

Like Cory said its nice and unique in a way but, other than the grips, it just seems like a "hodgepodge of leftover parts".
Well atleast the slide anyway....even the serial is rather ambiguous

Hodgepodge is not necessarily an inaccurate description.  However, it is a true "one of a kind."  Unique serial numbers aside, I am not sure there are any other "one off" R-9s that have been sold.  This will be the only one.

Only other "one off" I can think of is R600 that had a different colored silver/gold frame that RJ orginally bought.

What about any "special serial numbered guns"? Those are considered one offs I would think. GRANTED, they were to "special perps".

Now that Corey brought it up...RJ's 600 pup would have been an interesting proposition if the family were trying to raise funds for a charity in his honor. That pup in a special Hedley rig would bring "top dollar" IMHO. Looking up at ya RJ... ;)

I wonder who owns that now...?

I do agree about the fun part.  This has been the most fun I can remember on the fourm ever.  It's been fun trying to figure things out and now I guess we can continue the fun in trying to figure out who will get it!  My bet is Garry B.

Nice gun, nicer grips, but not anything I would be interested in. :'(

But it certainly was fun as others have stated. Good luck to the bidders, and it is for a good cause.  :D
Now someone needs to come up with something to keep all the non bidders occupied. ;D

It is a nice item but could have had a few touches that would have put it over the top.  The grips are fantastic from a collector perspective and the case is a nice touch.

A more "significant" serial number would have grabbed high interest and I hear there are some "bling" lovers in the crowd.  A finish like the Kimber Eclipse would be acceptable bling and an extra set of grips in carbon fiber would have sealed it.

Really interested in seeing where the dollars land on this one.
Title: Re: "One of a Kind" Rohrbaugh R-9S for A
Post by: DDGator on July 15, 2010, 09:56:23 PM
The serial number was a function of what frames were available in that finish.  I don't think there are a lot of carbon fiber grips still laying around -- at least that the factory is willing to part with.

The R5000 is still going to be available at some point -- but I have no idea how that will find a new home.  Lots of ideas are being discussed.

This wasn't designed to be the ultimate Rohrbaugh collectable -- just a really cool piece of Rohrbaugh design for a charitable cause.

Hi Duane,  Hope I didn't sound like I was being too critical.  It is a cool piece that I'll most likely bid on.  Just putting out some ideas that I thought were neat.  Actually interested if others like the ideas.

I'm a member of the CKCA (Custom Knife Collectors Association).  We have hundreds of custom makers and collectors as membership and are growing rapidly.  We have a charity auction annually (see attached link).  I was not involved in the ground work of getting authorized to do the auction but I know the president of the association who I'm sure would be happy to share some information.  PM me if you'd like me to get y'all together.

Happy to help if I can.
Best,
Rob

My problem is whether my attachment to No. 132 developed over the past six years is so strong that it would be futile for me to bid on that beauty -- especially in light of the work in progress on a presentation box and some old ivory grips for No. 132. What is it that Tracker has said about "need versus want . . . ?"   :-/

Thanks again Duane for your time on this,it has been fun..

I am sure that the charity will gain greatly with the auction of this Pup..That I believe is/was the whole reason for this being brought forward anyways..

The Pup being offered is interesting, but does not really yank too many of our die hard forum members chains-expectations were running a might high..

I have to admit,it doesn't yank me too hard either, but I am partial to the early Pups, albeit the "one of a kind status"..

It will be interesting to see how this all works out..

BS is exactly correct as blowing snow in standard weather report phraseology. Unless it is on MWN, Mount Washington, N.H.; then it is ST, sheer terror. Today is quite mild at MWN.

Tracker that link hits home for my family.  My father, William Callahan, died at the age of 57 from a massive heart attack on September 29, 2002 at the top of the observation deck there.  He had finished his first marathon just a couple months before and was in the best shape of his live, we thought.  He and mom were on vacation when it happened.  I miss my dad more than I can relay in type but am SO thankful for the time we had together and the time he spent with me.  I did not know his name was on the site and am thankful for your post.  I may have never know it was there.

Thank you for that, Corey; I have known of the beauty and treachery of MWN for years but didn't know that some considerate soul had the empathy to post all of the misfortunes there in some detail. I am saddened to hear of your father's passing but am consoled that his legacy is inscribed there in that fateful place.

My Dad died in 1969 at the age of 53, also from a heart attack.
I never had the chance to spend a lot of time with him, because he worked at Bethlehem Steel (32yrs) and worked swing shift (one week of days, one week of afternoons and a week of nights) then start the rotation over. I was twenty years old when he died, and wish I could have had the opportunity to spend time with him as an adult. My Mom will be 92 next month
and my step father just turned 97.

This thing with the father never seems to be quite right; they either die too young as in Corey, Richard, and John's case or in my situation my father died at 92. He and my mother were divorced when I was 12 and I spent the next 50 or so years trying to connect with him. Only in the last 10 years of his life was I able to bridge the emotional gap. Nothing is easy.

I just saw the last few posts on this thread. Corey, John, and Tracker -- you have my deepest sympathy on your losses.

My father died in 1942 when I was five years old. My mother never remarried, I was her only child, and she elevated my father to near mythical status in my young and impressionable mind. I still tend sometimes to measure myself against the mythical man I never knew and in doing so sometimes find myself lacking. As Tracker notes, nothing is easy.

I'll certainly add my sympathy to Corey, John, tracker and Richard to the losses of your Dad's.  I was fortunate to have my Dad until 2004 when he passed at 91, however, he is still missed greatly.  He was a master of everything and could fix anything that was broke or didn't work.

My Mom is now 92 and still lives by herself and drives to get her hair fixed once a week.

I understand your pain, and your feelings even though I had mine longer, except for tracker.  The loss of a Dad is tremendous and my thoughts are certainly with the each of you.

We all live this life quicker than we believe we are,and this is never so clear as it is with Parents,,

Lucky to have my father for 80 years(Mom too),but it's going on close to 20 years since his passing, and I still turn around and want to tell him something!!

This is why I will fight the good fight, to stick around for my kidlins as long as possible..

Did someone say something about an auction?? 8)

Oh, yes . . . the auction.  8)

One of the great things I find about this Forum is that, although the threads sometimes drift a bit, they are almost inevitably civil and are usually very interesting -- and they eventually tend to get back on subject. Just as you can't judge a book by its cover, you can't judge a thread on this Forum by its title.

Now . . . just where is that auction?

Sorry guy, I don't have any update at this time.  I fear the whole thing will end in a whimper, as opposed to a bang.

Its still there...in the safe awaiting its purpose in life.

I will take some of the blame for bringing it up before the details were totally worked out.  I should know better.  Little did I know this thing would take on a life of its own...

Duane,
It goes beyond your posting it when you did, we all did a good job of hyping it and ourselves up. ;D

But it was a lot of fun.

Well, my wife may be bidding on it.  I just showed her the pics and she loves the "paper towel print" on the grips. lol

Truth be known, I would love to have those grips but not at the price I think the gun will auction for.   SO, if one of you guys wants to buy that gun and sell me the grips..........  :o

When I had orginally accessed the "value" and desire to have those one off grips I had in my mind that nothing existed any thing like them.  A set very similar just surfaced so I am retracting my offer.  I dont think I "need" them anymore.  I'm not saying there not cool because they are, I just dont want them anymore.

I guess anyone can call anything "one offs"..

A bit disappointed again I guess, about the gun to be offered-sometime in the future..

I never got an aluminum set of grips when they were offered-I know they ended up being inconsistently made, but still might like a set for posterity..

Different is good sometimes!! 8)

Yep.  Apparently some charities have very strict rules about who they will take money from, and require an approval process to use their name.  On charity made it clear they would NOT accept money from a gun company...  Good to know.

It would be good to have a list of charities that are anti-gun.

It was going to be auctioned off and funds going to a charity, however, complications arose, and it's still in the Rohrbaugh safe, I think.  Picture on page 6.

The gun was never sold due to complications with the charitable aspect of the auction.  It is still in the safe.

It may appear at a later date -- no specific plans yet.
