Weapon? or Gun?
« on: April 18, 2011, 06:01:57 PM »
I know that Military and Police  (mostly retired) probably outnumber the civilians here.  And as seen in the "Cleaning" threads, old habits die hard.
The M&P guys use the term "Weapon" as per their ingrained training.

I am around these guys not only on the boards but in everyday life as well, and I am a civialian.
However, I prefer to choose NOT to use the term "Weapon" for the following reasons.

To me, it screams OFFENSIVE, which in civialian life usually means you are the bad guy.
It also just screams more negativity to nongun people than using other terms; only used for death, bad, etc.

To me I want people, anynoe thinking of Me or my guns as DEFENSIVE, used as a victim's role, in the right.
That's why I prefer, saying, "gun, pistol, revolver, 45, 9, etc.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a verbage Nazi, If my buddies want to say "Weapon", that's their privilege.  And I do not attack them for doing so.

I know it's just BS and a play on words, but isn't so much of life?   Especially politics!

That's just my veiw from the saddle.

Any thoughts ?

i agree 100%.

it just gives some folks "ammo" to use against us. particularly when we use the phrase in their presence, whereupon they have a tendency to then repeat it later to others.

i prefer to substitute the term "firearm". i make it a habit so i don't let some "evil" sounding word slip out at the wrong time.

Thoughts from the saddle --

When I think "weapon," this comes immediately to mind:  8)

As for complaints over "verbage," the ones that get me are those that confuse "pistol" with "revolver" and "magazine" with "clip."

I have used the term weapon a few times, however, prefer, as Reinz does in the above as I think of a 50 caliber Barrett as a weapon.    :)

Nothing. In addition to the M60 Patton, this also comes to my mind when the term is mentioned:  8)
