What ammo do you use for carry?
« on: March 07, 2005, 08:31:39 PM »
Hi All...

I am just wondering what you folks carry in your R9.  My favority 9mm ammo, standard pressure or otherwise, is Winchester RA9T.  That's 147gr standard pressure.  It tests quite well in gel for penetration and expansion and does as well as the +P rounds in these tests.

So I find it a nice conicidence that the R9 won't take +P or +P+.  After RA9T, I like Federal Tactical and Speer GDHP.

What do you all like?

GD 124's for me Jim ... tho I did find 115's a shade more effective on expansion.  I do know tho the gun seems well happy on this diet and I have faith in the round and bullet performance.  I have thought of alternatives but - doubt I'll change.

Yes, but it's easy to find.  There is no law against someone who is not a LEO owning it.  I believe th restriction is just marketing nonsense.

I’ve heard good things about them at stoppingpower.net as well.

I like the Gold Dot 115s..

Does really well for me-Accuracy wise and appears to be very "defensive" orientated!!  8)

Works well for me in other words.. ;D

I'm still going back and forth between the Gold Dot 115s and the 124s.

I seem to be more accurate with the 115s, but I like the recoil of the 124s a little better.  If someone would have told me a few months ago that I would be able to tell the difference, I would have thought they were crazy.  I know this is purely subjective, but for some reason, I find the 115s more "flippy", while the 124s seem to be a little "fuller".  Not sure I described this well, but to me it's like going from a 124gr 357SIG to a 230gr 45.  Less of a flip, more of a push.

I might just work with the 124s to get more accurate.

Usually lighter bullets provide more recoil.  How come you guys prefer lighter bullets?  Any particular reason?

Has anybody used Federal 9BP (115gr) in their R9?
It's not a round that immediately comes to mind when your discussing carry ammo, but I have some of it on hand and it has a good reputation for accuracy and stopping power.
Of course I'll try a variety of ammo when I finally get my R9, but I'm always interested in other's experiences.

I've been feeding my R9s a steady diet of 147-grain Golden Sabers.  So far, so good . . . .  However, I also have a stockpile of 124-grain Gold Dots on hand -- just in case I change my mind.

Can't remember the details Richard but - IIRC in one of my tests I was not over enamored with the Golden Sabers.  Might have been expansion - would have to go check.

Fed 9BP - nope Harry - not tried that, knowingly.  Maybe one more ammo test later on with R9 - and see if i can't get some.

Thanks.

R9SCarry -
Did you notice differences in felt recoil between the ammo that you've tried?

Really can't say I did notice any marked differences.  The pup is very ''stout'' in recoil and so feels pretty much same (to me) with about anything I put thru.

Chris,

What is it that tipped the scales for you to the 124's over the 115's?  I'm kind of fence sitting on this myself and was curious as to your thoughts.

Thanks!
