Title: Prototype Mag Extensions- 8 types now ? Which lenth best?
Post by: bamboobob on January 21, 2013, 11:27:14 PM
Hi: All

Have wanted straight extensions for a long time.
I started on this project on Saturday after Labor day

Prototypes
#1          1/2" +-      steep ramp ,   blunt,    flat tip                    5.1 gram     smooth
#2          3/4" -        45 deg            blunt.    flat tip                    9.2              smooth  (thicker in back)
#3          3/4" +-      45 deg            blunt,    pointy flat tip         7.4              smooth with cool lines
with slight rounding, sides of tip
#4          3/4" +-      steep 60 +-    blunt,    pointy flat tip          5.3              smooth
#5            same                                                                         6.4             smooth  (thicker in back)
                                                                                                                        with very cool lines
#6            same                                                                         6.6             "stepped coin" very nice
#7          3/4  x  3/4  x1 3/4   raw block                                     30.2
(with slots and holes for mag  )

#8           same,  but free cut     steep and curving                   10.3
(will be shaped down, with bump in middle of  front)

Pointy means side view and smaller flat tip

What would be better 1/2 or 3/4?   both?
What about big hole/ hollow  to lighten?
I hope to drill some out and free sculpt some.

All advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bob

I feel hand size will dictate what works best for each individual.

Personally, The plastic Pearce grip extenders for the PM9 and Colt Pocket 9 fit the R9 and worked great for me.  The gradual curve makes them fit a wide variety of hand sizes in my opinion.  I just did not like plastic with a heel mag latch.  Their shape was much better for me than yankee's design.  JMO

MRC  Thanks for your reply
I agree hand size matters (oops lol), maybe more so on hooked ones when tip, ends up at middle of little finger.  An old AMT 380 back-up had a nice one, hooked with radius and thin tip (matched two fingers on grip exact-no little finger)

CNC guy just came by with another sample, very nice 3/4", steep ramp with lines.  Next few may be steep ramp 3/4" smooth and/or cool lines(asymmetrical curved and straight lines).  Then 1/2" smooth, blocks and possibly stepped coin.  All of this is mega huge pain in butt for us even minor stuff.  Basically all are custom, lots of hand switching and hand work.  Looks like may finally get a little bit better.  Hours of computer coding for him maybe 20 pages. Typing is huge ordeal for me.

Two main questions for preference           1/2"   or  3/4"   ?
                                                                  smooth or other   ?

Hope to eventually get around to pictures.

Thanks again.

Sorry Bob, I am a totally Visual, Kinesthetic kind of guy.  I have to either see a pic a or hold one to form a valid opinion.

It's not that I don't care buddy.  I appreciate what you're doing.

Thanks

Bob,

This is great news! I too am on the visual side so some pics would be great. I do have a big hand (size 11 gloves) so I am guessing the 3/4 inch might be best for me. I also like the idea of the slight curve.

I have two of John's straight extensions, but I would like to get my hands on six more.

 Good Luck, keep us posted.

Thanks for all the positive response, it is very encouraging.
I just tried loading disk for old 1.3 argus camera, it started to take,  after many "next" 's  computer warned me not to so I said not to twice, then I think it may have finished any way.
Might try more testing or try email picture from cell phone.

testing picture upload   (I think I found "downloads")

now picture in docs   might work   might not   might be attachment ?

well here it goes

WOO HOO it worked !       (click on pic for more detail),
curvy lines are straighter and closer on other side

This is  "steep ramp" -  3/4"

Bob,

I get the idea of less weight. My only concern with this
"skeleton" design would be how it feels during a reload?
I have to out 60 rounds through the pup in one sitting.
This design could be a little painful on the palm of the hand
 doing the reloading.

 Just my 2 cents.

Good point, I'll try with that in mind.
What about push on flat with thumb or finger?

Will try another picture of more rough unfinished prototypes.

I just tried (inserting mag)  many times, just fine with palm, very nice with thumb or finger(seemed very natural).
Tried with both empty and full mag, very little pressure needed.
The part does have a flat bottom.

Thanks again for help and interest.

Just going on looks and not being able to coonfinger it; I like the middle one at the bottom.  It's justs more "finished".

But I do like the idea of a snubbie, like the one on the far right.  Just wonder how it works out?

Welcome Ballistic, thank you so much for your interest.

Reinz: Thanks for response, pic of more finished "snubbie" still has not made it to e-mail.
                                                                                                          (now here)
A pic with "stepped coin" in it finally showed up in e-mail (these are rough pictures of rough prototypes).

Welcome Swengen, thanks for interest.

Recently, a few more prototypes showed up, a smooth one that needs a little more or a little less finishing and a very cool one with more curving lines (very nice look and expected better grip ).

Does "curving lines/ better grip"  sound good or too strange?

Things are slow going, both here and with CNC Guy (Recent full time job + side work 4 work ).

Hope to get around to range testing (all non-range testing so far is great)

Thanks again all, any input will be very appreciated.

This extension project looks encouraging.  Please keep me informed.  I'm currently getting ready to order some VZ grips to help stabilize the gun a little better.  My thoughts are that between the grips and the magazine extension my handling of the R-9 will be more secure in hand.  I can shoot without an extension but the grips just seen a little smooth.

Project up-date:

Surprise  delivery of hooked "snubbies", medium length, about 5/8" with cool symmetrical lines (shiny with thin lines on front, wider lines on side and crosshatch / diagonal pattern underneath )
All who have seen them (a few), think they look great.
They take grip from 60% of ring finger on grip and standard floor plate to 100% + a little more space (also a little bit of little finger if I want).
My fist width at knuckles is almost 4" (3.5" bone to bone, with a little squeezing).

Thanks again, input/ interest  appreciated.

How long before you will have product for sale/delivery?

Thanks..

Ballistic:

Do not know, now have two extra hooked "snubbies".
Currently waiting for six straight (with cool lines, 2ed type), 3 or 4 hooked snubs and two straight snubs.  Delivery, to me. will likely be a few, whenever.  Things are slow going but picking up.

This thread is to share prototype project info and gain advice on size, shape, style and finish.  I  currently assume that an offer to sell under this thread WOULD BE WRONG and that classifieds is where to go.  I think a future link here may be ok but I am not totally sure.

Still hope to do testing plus more pictures ( a few hooked snubs, different angles, same pic and more better pics )

Thanks again for all interest, encouragement and advice.

.........   Now have  6 more straights.

Four type 2 cleaned up with nice line around top
One has been sanded and buffed to green pad fineness, looks great,  might buff more or wire wheel.

Went to range, pounded out 100 rds. of Silvertip 115 hp
and 11 rds. Herters 115 fmj (3-FTF's on first try with Herters )

Shot with four mags,  2 snubs/hooked,  2 straight.                     Extensions stayed on / tight.
Mostly two handed.  Shot a little with standard floor plate.

All the pounding went just fine.

Loading mags and pulling slide did get hard.

Shot out of box/pocket. No cleaning at range.
Still need to check screws.          ***
***** one screw was out a little - right front,    two more - thumb tip could loosen *****
*****  Tightened all four  with wrench ****

I would like to purchase a mag ext for my R9S Stealth from you. I like the hooked, and to me, the longer the better. What do you recommend, how much, and how long? I hear your workmanship is impeccable! Thanks, Norm..... calendarcars@gmail.com,  Thanks.

Hi, Car

Thanks for interest.  PM sent.

The straight one is longer,  you should find specs. above and under Classified.
The straight one is ( IMO ) not at all hand size sensitive, just adds length.
On the hooked ones (short or long) some hands will not fit just perfect but its just fine, still ads length. looks cool, may be better grip for some.
There may be more hooked ones out there than straight, ask the forum, ask their preference.

I like them all.

I got into this because I wanted to try both and could only get long hooked ones.
**They were way to nice to alter.**
I ran into someone while looking who planted the seed then had a friend who went in on it.
Everyone is different, like holsters,  try both send back what you do not like.
Hooked ones may be easier to pull out of gun or pouch.

Please call.

Thanks again Bob

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've had a busy
year. First I had several small heart attacks and
being a typical man I thought it was indigestion.
Then I had "the BIG ONE"! Rushed to the hospital
and they sent me straight to emergency surgery.
I'm now the proud owner of a shiny new Quadruple
Heart Bypass.

Needless to say my hands have been sorta' full.
Well, I managed to buy several of Bob's "Straight
Magazine Extensions". I'm very pleased with his
Straight Extensions. They are more streamlined
than the other Magazine Extensions I have, in
keeping with the minimalist theme of a Rohrbaugh.

The fit and finish is very nice, they mount and fit
well. For me they are just enough to get my pinky
to hang on. Which is perfect. The nice thing about
these Straight Extensions is they don't Jam/Hurt your
little finger under recoil like the Curved Extensions
do. At least for me.

I took some pictures and would have posted them
but I'm just not up to it. Maybe later if their is
enough interest. Anyway, HI!!! to all of my wonderful
Rohrbaugh Forum friends, I'll drop in when I can
but please don't expect to much in the way of me
responding to your many kind words.

If any of you have been thinking of buying Magazine
Extensions...NOW IS THE TIME!!!! You snooze...you
looze.

Glad you survived death's door and are still with us. I've often wondered what happened to ya.

Thanks for the review.  :)

Hi Reinz, I thought I was having some indigestion issues.
Issues I've had off & on my entire adult life, so when I
had the BIG ONE it was finally obvious to me that I was
having a heart attack. Both my parents died from heart
attacks and my (late) sister who was only one year older
than I am passed away a year and a half ago. Guess what
from.

Anyway, thanks for your kind words! I'm not sure how often
I can drop in and visit this wonderful forum. I just don't have
any energy or any memory for that matter.

Thanks again, buy for now!

Wow, billib, with those risk factors I'm sure your cardiologist told you that you are not only fortunate to be here, but you but better be sure to listen to him and do EveryThing he tells you to do!

Again, so glad you made it and glad to have you back. You need to be relaxing. What better way than relax on the Rohrbaugh Forum. One of the few forums without stress! :)

Hi Bill,

Thanks for post and great talks on the phone. ( especially stories of N.O. and Hurricane Katrina)
Get well soon.
You are right, I was going for "more streamlined" and 'minimalist theme of a Rohrbaugh"
