We have achieved Grippage!
« on: August 08, 2010, 09:39:31 PM »
I remember the day I found this forum and the R9 pistol.  After reading the forum and asking a few questions I decided I needed this gun.  I also new that I needed a pair of custom grips to go with it.

I dreamed up numerous designs while waiting for my pup to arrive.  The first thing I did when I got it home was to take the grips off.  I thought it would be sooooo easy to make a new set in my shop.  My heart sank when I saw the recess on the right grip panel.  That was going to be a problem.  I thought long and hard and eventually worked on some prototypes in wood, but eventually gave that up.

I started asking people that make custom grips but didn't get anywhere until I email Alumagrips.  They couldn't help me, but that did have sets of the stock clear anodized grips in stock with the Rohrbaugh logo.  I order some, took an earlier design and went looking for a cnc shop to customize them.

What you see below is the results.  You can also see where I got the idea for the pattern in my edc knife a Benchmade Gaucho.  I decided to leave the original Rohrbaugh logo as a ghost image.

I think they add a lot to the look and the grip of my pup.

Kanuist, great job on the grips! You said you bought "some" are they just for your own use, or are you going to be offering them for sale? If so, how much, when, and all the usual questions. I like the grips. They would look great on one of my stealths. Keep us posted.       Gene

Thanks all...

I don't have any plans to produce these, but if there is a market for them I may change my mind.

My cnc guy said he could make the grips from scratch as opposed to modifying the set Alumagrips made.

He is currently working on another set that are being thinned down so I can add wood tops to them.  This would be my solution to the all wood grips breaking at the mounting holes.

kanuist:

I would describe that as not only "grippage" but also "lookage."  8) Those grips really go well with that Benchmade Gaucho. Congratulations to you for the concept and to your CNC friend for the execution of an elegant design.

Kanuist,
Did you have to strip and re-anodize the grips?

Yes.  The grips from Alumagrips had a clear anodized finish.  I stripped it with warm Greased Lightening Multi-Purpose cleaner.

After the cnc work was done, I sent them to Scott Springer at Springer Precision to re-anodize them.

Well done, for sure, kanuist.  Will be great to see your next project that's in the works.    :)
