Title: Any news on these?
Post by: jarcher on July 02, 2007, 05:01:51 AM
Wow, I see I have started 50%, and soon to be 66%, of the topics here!  I have not been by this board in quite a while.  Anything new on these?

I believe Tom Watson ("theirishguard") has some R380s on order. I believe they're due to start shipping later this year. You might want to get in touch with Tom through his website:

I was told the release date was suppose to be July. Due to set backs, more toward the end of the year

I'm really getting disappointed at the continual "whoops, we gave too early a date" problems from the firearms industry. When was the last time something was rolled out, working, on time or ahead of schedule?

Anyway, I also am interested in the .380 version.  :-/

Don't see it on his website nor any mention on the Rohrbaugh website either.

I spoke with Eric yesterday and he said they are currently focusing efforts and resources on some of these high end R-9s which I hear folks talking about...HOWEVER...he also said the R-380s will hit the market beginning later this year.

So all and all that was encouraging to hear...a couple/few more months wait is nothing to me anymore having waited a year or more on certain other "lil 380 critters.  I say this NOT being a very patient waiter by Nature, but rather because of the glow of satisfaction I have first (and continue) to experience when finally holding something like your first R-9 or Seecamp.  Wait, wait...wait, wait, waiting...TW<<

Title: R-380...
Post by: TW on September 29, 2007, 09:18:12 AM
>>I can tell you one thing...the more noise the boys here about folks like us wanting the R-380...the faster they are likely to move on them.  Like all businesses they need to earn money...which for them now seems to be coming in with these fancy R-9s.  Personally, I think they have a much bigger market for the R-380s...but what do I know - other than the fact I will buy an R-380 that slips in my pocket (or my wifes') long before I buy a fancy engraved R-9 (already have two) that sits in a box.  So there - lol...!...TW<<

+1 on that. I don't need engraved models. A .380 on the other hand sounds very appealing to me. With Ranger +P ammo, I think that it's a better choice than any of my J-frames without the excessive recoil of the R9's.

I am just curious...
Why would anyone want this when it is the same size as the 9 mm?
I do not imagine the weight savings could be that much??
Title: Re: Any news on these?

Less recoil would be my first response ;) 2nd just to have one :o Myself I am happy with the 9mm.

>>I have two main reasons for wanting an R-380...  I sorta collect .380s - mostly small out of production Colts but more modern ones too - like a Seecamp .380.  At this point in life the guns I collect are all ones I shoot = no wall hangers here.  And having shot the prototype R-380 I can honestly say it is the most pleasant and accurate .380 I've ever handled...those guys had me hook, line, and sinker a couple years ago while I still had the prototype in hand.

The other reason is it's a Rohrbaugh...which I'm hoping won't cost much more than a standard R-9.  I hope the fancy collectors edition R-9s sell well for the guys but as far as I'm concerned that market is in a way, far away galaxy from where I'm at with guns...which is fine...to each their own, and I dare say I think these Rohrbaugh Collectors editions will do nothing but increase in value in the years to come...

But dang it - I want my R-380...!...TW<<

Less recoil = better accuracy ... a hit with a .380 will do more damage than a miss with a 9mm.

>>On that note - there is a good selection of serious self defense .380 ammo on the market these days...so if you did choose to carry the R-380 as a deep carry BUG or otherwise gun...I feel the R-380 could be as good or better protection for folks who don't/can't/won't shoot an R-9 well within the limitations of what both guns are for = close range protection.

Certainly the R-380 will be a big success in other countries where private ownership of anything of a bigger caliber is banned...not to forget police looking for an effective BUG.

And if the .380 critter has even the basic sights that are applied to the R-9 these days...the R-380 should even be a decent plinker / defense gun at more extended ranges (20...maybe 25m...?) for ALL shooters.  I should also imagine the R-380 will withstand a lot more shooting than the R-9 is made for.  I suspect a well loved R-9 can be made to stand up to many thousands of rounds with proper tweaking and the occasional part replacement.  But as we all know the R-9 was constructed to be carried a lot....shot a little.  Besides...who in their right mind would want to shoot the R-9 day after day...?...ouch.  The R-380 is a whole new game to this regard...easy on the hands, and hopefully more easy on the gun itself.

BTW...The R-Bro folks told me recently that nowadays the R-9 comes with sights as standard...!...you have to special request one if you don't want sights.  To this end Rohrbaugh and those of us with "sighted" guns owe it all to the fella some of you older R-9 followers will remember as Blackhawk.  Blackhawk was just a bit ahead of my time but I've heard Eric talk about him a lot, and always with a spark of fondness and appreciation.  Blackhawk will always be an important part of early R-9 history...so I would like to add my thanks to the man...!

As I understand it, Blackhawk was effective in getting the R-Bros to listen up about sights by making his thoughts known on the subject on this and/or other gun forums.  The term, "cranky about it" is probably a fitting description as to his mode of expression Blackhawk used to relay his feelings on the matter..and apparently he found or made a bunch of other folks feel that way too because as I understand it from Eric - they received a lot of noise on the subject...enough to sway Brother Karl to make a few...then  more, and more - until today where as I said...sights are now standard on the R-9.

If we could just find a way to impress upon the boys to start making R-380s sooner than later by making similar noise...maybe some of us will be able to find an R-380 in our Christmas stocking this year...!  What do you think...?  So make those calls and write those letters boys and girls...!!  If nothing else put your thoughts down here at the unofficial Rohrbaugh Forum (which IS followed by the R-Bros, BTW)...lets find a way to get the attention of other Rohrbaugh Forum members who may not be aware of what an R-380 is all about.  And for those of us who interact on other gun forums where mouse guns are a respectable topic - lets make our thoughts about the R-380 known there too.  All which makes me think...anyone have current contact points for the Blackhawk...?...!!...TW<<

I remember Blackhawk from THR. He was the first one to really start spreading the word about Rohrbaugh.

As far as ammo in .380, I prefer Winchester Ranger SXT 95gr +P.

I'd also like to see Rohrbaugh make an all-steel version of the R9. The added weight would help cushion the recoil and I would be first in line to get one.

Any news on these as to availability?

Also, in reading through the posts there are some questions about 380+p ammo. As far as I know, there is no SAAMI specs for a 380 +p round.

I believe that the first 100 or so R-380s may be shipped by the factory before Christmas of this year.

The R-380 is a locked-breach design. A friend who has fired it likened its felt recoil to that of a .25 ACP. It should be a real pleasure to shoot!

Howdy - I've been away for a while.  After reading this whole thread I can't believe some of the posts.  Yeah it would be ok to have a 380, but some of  you act like it would be so much better than the R9.
(I do understand for women the 380 would be nice)

You don't get it!  It's the the 9mm that make the Rohrbauh so Special.
And the lightest, most powerful pocket rocket on the planet.
And very controlable.

I for one I have finally found the "holy grail" of pocket pistols.

Title: Any news on these?
Post by: TW on April 01, 2008, 02:41:22 PM
>>Last I heard from Eric some weeks back...shipments on the .380s have been pushed back to June-ish because Karl decided to change something like the R9 based slide into one more suited to his liking for the .380.  For those of us who waited almost a year for our first R9s...what's another couple/few months if potential bugs or even just looks are being worked out before we buy them...ya know...?...!!!

That said...if anyone were to lock in THE first batch of .380s to leave the shop - it would be Tom...!  So if you are serious about the R 380 at FMV, I would suggest sending Tom a deposit ASAP.

About the caliber issue...  There is no question in my mind that the R9 is all around "better" (???) = more powerful pistol to slip into a pocket for personal protection for some people.  However...there seems to be a number of folks out there who simply cannot handle this particular gun, and it could be some of these same people will be able to appreciate the size and quality of a Rohrbaugh gun and shoot the .380 well.  And with today's .380 defensive ammo choices it is my opinion a well placed close range shot will likely put an end to such an attack.  After all...we are not talking about your Father's .380.  Actually even that is not fair to say.  My Father, a Major General active in WWII, Korea, and part of Viet Nam, carried a Colt 380 (or might have been .32) with ball ammo in a shoulder harness at all times when in harms way...which he was in a lot.  Of course he also had a .45 on his side most of that time, but again the smaller Colt was an all the time gun.

There are a number of other reasons why the R.380 may prove very popular.  Besides slight of build or other people who are just not comfortable with the .9mm, there are people who feel a well placed .380 is just as effective or better for them opposed to the 9mm.

Then there are the European and Asian markets where apparently many countries still favor the .380 round.  Spooks...!  Spooks gotta have a .380 - remember James Bond and his faithful PPK.  And we have .380 collectors, of which I am one...and Rohrbaugh groupies who just gotta have anything produced by those guys.

One other thing which as of yet is no more than my own speculation...  In theory if the R380 is based somewhat on the R9 design (the R380 prototype was identical to the .9mm), this new gun should be able to manage the effects of the .380 firing cycle better than the 9mm.  In other words...  The .380 may have more "range gun" potential than the R9, which should please the folks who just can't abide by the makers words in regards to the 9mm to carry a lot...shoot a little.

For today that's all I have to say about the R380.  I like to stop by this thread every once in a while just to see what is going on...and in hopes of one day hearing Tom Watkins post to say..."The Rohrbaugh .380s are IN...!"...**sigh**...TW<<

Whatever the issue I doubt the design will alter shape enough to mismatch your holsters.

On second thought...  Yeah, it probably will make for a bad fit...so being the nice guy that I am - just send me those holsters when they arrive and I will eat the costs **grins**...TW<<

Hello to all waiting for the R-380,  I got to put a couple mags through one Today.  All I can say is Sweeeettttt. The joke around the shop after you pull the trigger is :  Did it go off?  The recoil is like shooting a 22. The 380 is the same size frame and slide as the R-9.  However there are many internal dimensions that are different.  Springs have been ordered from Wolff and the machines are running.  It won't be long now and it will be worth the wait.  Dan

I guess thats the same idea for me.  I am very happy with the 9mm but would like to have the .380.  Would be more fun to shoot.  I have put less than a 100 rounds thru my R9s because I use it as a CCW and not a range gun.  I am thinking I can get some practice with the .380 if it is indeed the same basic size and weight as the R9s.
