Title: VZ Blue Carbon Fiber Grips
Post by: scar2783 on January 24, 2012, 10:37:42 AM
Called VZ today to see if those new blue CF grips were available. The first "girl" I spoke with didn't have a clue what I was talking about. After requesting to speak with someone who had a more intimate knowledge of the Rohrbaugh grips ( and receiving a snotty reply, I might add ) I spoke with another woman who stated that the blue grips were a one off for Karl and it was up to him if they were going to supply them. Being I have zero interest in the VZ black grips, I guess I'll have to just wait it out on the blue ones.

Anyone else have any info if and when Rohrbaugh might be suppling those grips?

I would call the factory and ask.  I was told they will be available separately.  They may have to be ordered from Rohrbaugh, as opposed to VZ.

I would think you're right...Thanks Duane. I tried to call several times with no luck.

Keep trying. It's an odd week for them, recovering from SHOT and all.

Here is the poop on the VZ Rohrbaugh Blue CFs grips.
I called today and got the exasperated reply that they didn't make any Blue Carbon Fiber Grips for the Rohrbaugh, so after a little more fruitless conversation I politely asked to speak with someone with a brain. The next female on the phone told me that they will NOT be making the grips for sale only for Rohrbaugh and ONLY after Rohrbaugh places an order for some, if and when they do.

Here is the poop on the Robar Blue CFs grips.

Robar = VZ?
I asked Tom about ordering a 2005 tribute so hopefully if others have done the same the factory will be placing an order for some with VZ!

Sorry for the confusing typo, meant VZ Rohrbaugh CF grips. :o ;D

I think it will be a while before we see any Tributes of VZ Blue CFs. just my opinion.

That is fine with me, it will give my wallet some time to recover.

I think this tread needs a pic of the VZ blue CFs.

Ryan, They are very nice, and they also fill the palm a little better giving you a better grip. Truly very nice.

Thanks for the update gents. I did call the factory and they told me they were going to offer these grips and  to check back in late March. I hate to pester them, but they are really nice! As someone else had stated, they look ( and feel? ) better than the originals.

Mark.  Thanks for your update; guess I'll have to have a pair of those in the Blue Carbon Fiber; late March; now on the calendar.  Thanks again.

I also have an order in for a Tribute Edition and should be receiving it soon.

I have not heard anything about the new blue carbon fiber grips from Rohrbaugh or VZ. If I do, I will give you an update.

P.S. When asked, Maria stated that there is no Rohrbaugh Crest engraved on the grips either. THAT would have been the cherry on top!

checkering would be a nice touch as well.

When I put myself on the waiting list last month, Maria said that they would offer them with checkering but didn't give me a time frame. I decided to cave and get the smooth ones for now and buy another set once the checkered ones are ready. Maybe I'll order the standard VZ carbons with checkering (if they ever offer those) for a little variety...

I ordered a set of the Blue CF grips today. I too will order a set of the blue grips if the checkering becomes available.

Personally I think the checkering ruins the look of the two-tone (CF included) VZ grips. Functionally I guess there may be some benefit, but I dont seem to have problems holding on to the uncheckered grips. Different strokes I guess.
Title: Re: VZ Blue Carbon Fiber Grips
Post by: Z on April 25, 2012, 05:18:07 PM
I have not looked at any checkered 2 tone R9 grips G10 or CF in person.
I am sure it would impact the look with the checkering.
Title: Re: VZ Blue Carbon Fiber Grips

I think smooth grips look better too, but I try to put function over form (to an extent) for my carry guns. I live in FL so it's pretty hot and humid 80% of the year. Grip isn't a problem when it's cooler or dry, but once it gets over 93 with 95% humidity a small, smooth pistol starts to become as difficult to hold onto as my tax refund.

Correction: Just spoke to Maria and she said she was mistaken, the blue CF grips will not be offered with checkering. I guess I'll make the smooth ones work.

Title: Re: VZ Blue Carbon Fiber Grips

Received mine yesterday. Excellent quality and they look great, however, the fit is horrible. No disrespect intended to VZ, I'm just making a observation as a paying customer. There are VERY sharp edges & over hang where the grips meet the frame, in particular, the lower grip near one's palm. NO comparison to the set of original black Rohrbaugh CF's I have. NONE! The originals flow around the frame and feel as if they're part of the gun.

Rohrbaugh is printed on the back of the grip, so I'll keep them as a collectable but they're off the gun already and the original CF's back on my pup. It's a shame because they do look awesome and I was looking to save any wear to the originals but for $80 bucks, plus shipping, coupled with VZ's reputation, I expected a perfect fit.

Mark I would like a picture of the fit issue you speak of. Just curious what the cause is.

I have owned 3 sets of VZ carbon fiber grips and all were a little tough on the hands along the edges. The first two sets I smoothed out with a file and all was good, the third was the blue CF and I left them alone.

I did not experience any fit issues with any of the grips in any fashion.

If there is a fit issue I am sure they will replace them. The last set I purchased, VZ provided a return label if there were any issues.

You may want to contact them.

Let us know how you make out.

Got mine yesterday and love them! Sorry Z, I didn't get a chance to take any pictures last night. I'll try to snap a few tonight.

Mark, I noticed that sharp edge right away too. I took a file to it and the grips felt perfect within 5 minutes. Just go really slowly and take a little off at a time (like fitting 1911 parts) and you'll be fine. I can't compare them to the original CF grips Rohrbaugh offered, but if they feel anything like the stock grips I prefer the VZs. I think someone hit the nail on the head when they said the factory grips made the pup feel like a 2x4 while the VZs make it feel more like a pistol.
Title: Re: VZ Blue Carbon Fiber Grips
Post by: scar2783 on May 02, 2012, 10:09:49 AM
Z, I'll try to take photos later.

G, I'll try it but am a little hesitant as I don't want to ruin the finish. I'm guessing you didn't have that problem at all. The original CF's are nothing like the crappy stock grips they put on the guns now. The edges of the originals are all rounded off, where the stock grips do make it feel like a 2x4. That's a perfect analogy and these VZ's aren't far from that either.

The matte finish makes it hard to tell where I've filed so don't worry. Just take your time. As I've learned on other projects, you can always remove more material, but you can't add back.

Nice video! I would image this particular R9 is owned by Rohrbaugh and loaned out to different companies for reviews. With that in mind, the grips with the crest might be pre-production prototypes and the only ones with a crest. Why they decided not to have the crest on the production grips could be due to cost or a host of other reasons. The crest or checkering would have been nice, but I'm pretty happy with the grips as they are.

I would be willing to pay even a small premium to have the option for the crests on the grips...IMHO it completes the look since all other factory grips come with crests. Especially since they were made for the tribute model which is a tribute to the originally silver framed R9s which had crests on the Blue CF grips.

Only difference I can tell from my Tribute blue grips and VZ's black grips is the blue ones are smoother, while the black have more tactical feel for grip.

Does anyone know how many Tributes have been manufactured?  Thanks.

I have been going back and forth with my Tribute order as well. I would speculate that most potential Tribute customers already have multiple pups so it really has to be something special to get added to the kennel. A crest on the grips would certainly sweeten the deal. I have a little while until the SN I wanted will be available so hopefully things will work out.
