Dave,

You’ve got me dreaming and ready to pack.

What a wonderful trip!!!!

I’m looking forward to viewing your photos. If you need a reader, PM me. I’ve got one I don’t use. You can have it.

Bill - thanks for the offer but I'll pick up a reader and learn how to post some pics.

Tom - The Mountain Man (Jack) also sells wolf pelts - I plan on sending him a hand forged hunting knife to thank him for his hospitality if I can figure how to get it to him -  I think his mail is brought in by the plane that flew me to his cabin.

Need to call the cable company - keep losing my internet connection

Dave, Let me know if you can get a hold of that mountainman. I would like to buy some of his wares. Tom

Will do Tom - he has lived in that small artic cabin for the last 30 years.  In the summer he uses solar panels for some basic electric uses.  In the winter there is no sun and it can get 60 below.  It is beyound me how they do it.  Many tell me that they look forward to the dark.  One benifit is the Northern Lights.  Of course you have to get use to the wolves howling at night trying to entice your dogs to go out far enough so they can make them into a meal.

Besides selling from trapping and hunting he makes some income from showing those of us dreamers, like myself, what "roughing it" really is like.  He has a trap door where he has dug out a hole and shelves in the frozen earth for his cold food storage.  A different world.

Incredible - something I would so like to sample.  Life in the rough - and all the hassles thereof.

I wish I was 20 years younger!

Hey Chris, We would all like to do that-for about 4-5 days!!
And being 20 years younger helps also.

You are right Tom. If I were 20 years younger, I love to try it for 4 or 5 days. but I think that after that, it would get old really quickly. Still, it sounds like a dream from the here and now.

Some people have the courage to do these wonderful things.

I once worked with someone who walked across the United States.

My dream was always to do it during retirement, but now it seems like a rather long way.

Maybe if I was twenty years younger.

Dave,
Thanks for the story, the pictures and the adventure. How did your friend Jack the mountain man get all those wolf skulls? Thats a lot of shooting for one man, even if he is a very extraordinary man at that.  The Grisly Mother with the cubs at 15 feet would have finished me off. She wouldn't have to attack, I'd have had a heart attack. My heart was racing thinking about her. If I ever go, I'm taking a L.A.W. or a bazooka. 1200 to 1500  lb.s of angry Mom? I don't think so.
Dave, when you go on vacation, you really go on vacation. Thanks
Mike

Dave:

Thanks for posting on your Alaskan trip.  It makes me want to pack up and head out.  Your photograph of the mother grizzly with cubs at close range should really be something!

Chris helped me set some of the pictures up for posting - what a guy.  Never posted a pic before having just gotten a digital camera.  Having internet connection problems - keep losing my signal every five minutes if I can get on at all.  When I am able to schedule the cable company here to fix it I'll try to post some of the pictures on a new thread - may not be for several days.

Wow!  Well the post total you recorded was pretty impressive but hey - 1,000 actual thread topics - awesome indeed.

Not bad for a fairly limited membership - and to be honest - I wouldn't want the board to necessarily have to have 1,000's of members just to sound impressive.  There is always the ''quality is better than quantity'' deal! :)
